Résumé:
The term 'geoengineering' refers to technologies that counteract the effects of anthropogenic climate change by deliberately intervening in Earth systems. In the midst of a climate crisis, and with disparate views on whether planetary-scale design is the appropriate response at all, 'The Planet After Geoengineering' employs a speculative fiction approach to think with and against geoengineering as a form of planetary management. The graphic novel makes climate engineering and its controversies visible in a series of five stories that are collectively assembled into a planetary section from the deep underground to outer space. Each geostory - Petrified Carbon, Arctic Albedo, Sky River, Sulfur Storm, and Dust Cloud - depicts possible future Earths that we come to inhabit on the heels of a geoengineering intervention all while situating such promisory visions within a genealogy of climate-control projects from nineteenth-century rainmaking machines and volcanic eruptions to Cold War military plans. Such fabrications of an engineerable earth open a space to forge a new geo-politics that includes the actual Earth - its dimensions, processes, and lifeforms - as constitutive of design and the planet.

Résumé:
This volume from BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, combines handbook, dictionary, and anthology to investigate artistic practice aimed at achieving social change. With text and visual essays, definitions, exercises, interviews, and images, the contributors envision a praxis that is committed to experimenting with aesthetics and politics in ways that go beyond the conventions of Western modernity. These are practices that are interdisciplinary, theoretically informed, and politically driven, offering ways of "being together otherwise." Catalyzed by the work of artist Jeanne van Heeswijk, which focuses on radicalizing civic processes, ''Toward the not-yet' imagines and enacts alternative ways of conceiving the present and future. Contributors, among them notable artists, scholars, activists, and writers consider ways of participating in civic life, including "dreamscaping" and "radical listening"; the creation of safer spaces for humans and nonhumans; ways of radically shifting laws and policies; and tactics and methods of collective sanctuary. ''Toward the not-yet'' is part of BAK's series of BASICS readers, debuting a SUPERBASICS variation that is larger, with more visual content.

Résumé:
Architects increasingly operate on a global scene, and just as numerous British architects have proved highly successful at winning projects abroad, so architects from Europe, the United States and the Far East are making their mark in Britain. One thinks, for example, of Daniel Libeskind’s Imperial War Museum and Tadao Ando’s new square and pavilion project, both in Manchester, or of Frank Gehry’s Cancer Care Centre in Dundee. Well-known British practices such as Future Systems, Alsop Architects and Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners also inevitably feature prominently in the international story of the country’s recent architectural renaissance, but so too do newer, smaller practices, including many based outside the capital. This book describes and illustrates over 100 outstanding projects, both large and small, from around Britain – none completed earlier than 2001, and some still under construction or at planning stage. Covering every conceivable building type, from houses, offices and department stores to theatres, heritage sites and museums, this book makes a contribution to the continuing debate about the role of architecture in forging a new environment and underpinning the growth of a healthy society.
