Résumé:
According to a recent American study, sexism and racism are so widespread in architecture that there is a distaste for these topics within the branch itself. What are the reasons for this exclusionary working culture? Even in Germany, most architecture graduates since the turn of the millennium have been female—but a large number of conventions and assumptions within the discipline make it difficult for women to remain in the profession. As a result, a great deal of highly trained talent is lost. This book uses an intersectional feminist perspective to examine the structural causes that push women—and anyone else who isn’t a white cis man—out of the field. How can architectural teaching and discourse, as well as the industry’s self-image, become more diverse? Where are the experiences of a pluralistic society missing from the built environment? How can we bring about cultural change in planning and architecture?

It highlights a diversity of trends in the areas of migration, criminal victimization, gated communities, and the status of women, suburbanization, and neighbourhood associations. Each chapter includes input from both an expert on urban life in China and an 'outside' expert from the fields of sociology, geography, economics, planning, political science, history, demography, architecture, or anthropology. John R. Logan is the founder of the Urban China Research Network, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and a member of the editorial boards of Journal of Urban Affairs and City and Community. He was chosen Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University at Albany, SUNY, as well as Director of the Lewis Mumford Center for Comparative Urban and Regional Research. In April 2003 he was selected by American Demographics magazine as one of five social demographers whose work has most influenced his field in the last 25 years.

Résumé:
Winnipeg-based architecture firm Green Blankstein Russell and Associates (GBR) opened in the slow years of the Great Depression. From this inauspicious starting point the firm would grow to become, by the 1950s and 60s, a major player on the Canadian architectural scene: the largest architectural office between Ontario and British Columbia, with seven offices in four provinces. GBR was a hub for partnership and training, and was a pioneering force in its inclusion of women and members of Canada's diverse cultural communities within the field of design. Covering a wide range of individual buildings and practitioners, this book explores the significant mark GBR made on its hometown and across the country, as well as the firm’s role as a leader in the growth of Modernist architecture in Canada.

Résumé:
Around the beginning of the twentieth century, women began to claim Berlin as their own, expressing a vision of the German capital that embraced their feminine modernity, both culturally and architecturally. Women located their lives and made their presence felt in the streets and institutions of this dynamic metropolis. From residences to restaurants, schools to exhibition halls, a visible network of women’s spaces arose to accommodate changing patterns of life and work. A Women’s Berlin retraces this largely forgotten city, which came into being in the years between German unification in 1871 and the demise of the monarchy in 1918 and laid the foundation for a novel experience of urban modernity. Although the phenomenon of women taking control of urban space was widespread in this period, Despina Stratigakos shows how Berlin’s concentration of women’s building projects produced a more fully realized vision of an alternative metropolis. Female clients called on female design professionals to help them define and articulate their architectural needs. Many of the projects analyzed in A Women’s Berlin represent a collaborative effort uniting female patrons, architects, and designers to explore the nature of female aesthetics and spaces.

Résumé:
The art of producing color in movies is a fascinating process with a long history. Many people don’t realize that, as early as the 1890s, much of silent cinema was in color. They also may not know that women were the main workforce behind the techniques that first produced these effects, a tradition that continued as the practice evolved. Breakthroughs in color technology have created ongoing opportunities for filmmakers to experiment with new forms of narrative and emotional storytelling. Spectacular, psychological and sensory, color has become an integral part of the cinematic experience. From the earliest hand-painted films to Technicolor and today’s digital cinema, Color in Motion takes readers on a journey through the evolution and significance of color in film. Presenting insightful analysis, engaging case studies and inspiring conversations with scholars and experts in the field, with topics ranging from animation to the intersections of color and race in cinema, it traces the historical development of color technologies and their impact onscreen. Incorporating vivid images of color films throughout history—Serpentine Dance, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Fantasia, The Red Shoes, Vertigo, West Side Story, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Moonlight and more, as well as new multispectral scans of rare silent-era film prints—this essential volume celebrates color’s enduring influence on the medium of film.

This latest installment in his acclaimed Makers of Modern Architecture series again demonstrates his unparalleled skill in explaining the revolutionary changes that have reshaped the built environment over the past century and a half. These studies of more than two dozen master builders--women and men, celebrated and obscure, idealists and opportunists--range from the environmental pioneer Frederick Law Olmsted and the mystical eccentric Antoni Gaudí to the present-day visionaries Frank Gehry and Maya Lin.

Résumé:
A literary and cultural history of the intimate space of the eighteenth-century closet?and how it fired the imaginations of Pepys, Sterne, Swift, and so many other writers Long before it was a hidden storage space or a metaphor for queer and trans shame, the closet was one of the most charged settings in English architecture. This private room provided seclusion for reading, writing, praying, dressing, and collecting?and for talking in select company. In their closets, kings and duchesses shared secrets with favorites, midwives and apothecaries dispensed remedies, and newly wealthy men and women expanded their social networks. In 'The Closet', Danielle Bobker presents a literary and cultural history of these sites of extrafamilial intimacy, revealing how, as they proliferated both in buildings and in books, closets also became powerful symbols of the unstable virtual intimacy of the first mass-medium of print.

Résumé:
Providing hard data for trends that many perceive only vaguely and some deny altogether, "Designing for diversity" reveals a profession rife with gender and racial discrimination and examines the aspects of architectural practice that hinder or support the full participation of women and persons of color. Drawing on interviews and surveys of hundreds of architects, Kathryn H. Anthony outlines some of the forms of discrimination that recur in architecture, such as being confined to certain kinds of positions, typically interior design for women, government work for African Americans, and computer-aided design for Asian-American architects. Anthony discusses the profession's attitude toward flexible schedules and part-time contracts and identifies strategies that have helped underrepresented individuals advance in the profession. Given the traditional mismatch between diverse consumers and predominantly white male producers of the built environment, plus the shifting population balance toward communities of color, Anthony contends that the architectural profession staves off true diversity at its own peril. Through her book, practicing architects, managers of firms, and educators will learn how to create conditions more welcoming to a diversity of users as well as designers of the built environment.
