The construction of the Stuttgart-Ulm railway line is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. The centrepiece is the new Stuttgart Main Station, which replaces the former 16-track terminus station as an underground 8-track through station. As part of this, the aboveground tracks in the city centre are being removed and the areas thus freed up open up new urban-development perspectives. Stuttgart-East and Stuttgart-North – city districts previously separated by tracks – will be connected with each other again after over 150 years and travel time shortened. Christoph Ingenhoven (advised by, et al., Frei Otto) won the competition for the new design for the Stuttgart Main Station in 1997. After the financing agreement was concluded in April 2009, construction work was begun on 2 February 2010. The new main station is supposed to go into operation for the change in timetables in December 2026. Christoph Ingenhoven explains: "This project will have enormous significance for the development of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, and southwest Germany. The building must also do justice to this significance with its design – must show what Stuttgart is today and will be in future."

Care is about nurturing, feeding, nursing, assisting, and loving human beings. Nadasen traces the rise of the care economy, from its roots in slavery, where there was no clear division between production and social reproduction, to the present care crisis, experienced acutely by more and more Americans. Using the state of Vermont as the rural ideal, the authors compare contemporary vs. traditional development to demonstrate how today's primary way of developing land - suburban sprawl - is forever changing the look of rural American. Using a host of aerial photographs - many altered through computer simulation to illustrate how landscapes are transformed over time - "Above and beyond" argues for a return to traditional development patterns that produce more compact cities and towns. Highlighting widespread trends in contemporary land development - from fragmentation (our tendency to spread out) to separation (our tendencey to allocate separate areas of town for living, working, shopping and playing) - the authors offer case examples of coummunities that have succeeded in curbing those trends. Thanks to digital technology and post-structuralist thought, architects and artists are facing a brave new world of bodies without organs, buildings that circumscribe their function, and art that forms a prosthetic hard drive for our consciousness. In this schema, technology, which Marshal McLuhan theorized as the extension of our bodies into the world, has become inverted and is now literally seen as modifying and transforming our relation to that world through media's ability to not only create the means of representation, its subject and content, but also organize author and audience alike. Beyond Form is both a celebration of our situation and a critical survival manual. The contributors to this volume, including artists Jennifer Steinkamp and Maureen Connor, respond to the mediating space of technology, aware that the forms of the future lie within the indeterminate content of cultural production and consumption itself, and not within the ideal of the technological sublime of modernism that had in the past reduced this issue, both performatively and iconographically, to a question of form, function and style. Under the confluence of nomadic economics, technologies, and industries - commonly known as "suburban sprawl" - the city of Detroit, segregated and isolated, constitutes one of the great monuments to decay by a modernist city. It is perhaps the clearest and earliest example of the effects of a globalized economy and labor market. "Urban ecology" contains a collection of projects generated by the International Center for Urban Ecology (iCUE), a nomadic laboratory for future cities. Since its founding in 1998 by Kyong Park, iCUE has accomplished five significant projects through international workshops like "Architecture of resistance," installations, videos, and urban designs. The laboratory investigation promotes discourse on the decomposition and possible reconstitution of a "moving city" - a more useful term through which to identify a city like Detroit. iCUE's projects have taken anti-architectural and non-urban perspectives, using multi-disciplinary processes and integrated collaboration with local communities and activists. "Urban ecology" brings together essays on Detroit and many other cities in crisis around the world.
