''Intangible heritage'' presents both Marx’s work and teachings, compiling nine of his most seminal lectures written between 1962 and 1983. Illustrated with images of his mosaics and detailed maps, the volume groups Marx’s lectures into three thematic sections: in the first, he explores how botanical expeditions, such as his trip to the Amazonas in 1983, informed his thinking about urban landscapes; in the second, Marx traces facets of landscape architecture to their ancestral origins and discusses the role of subjectivity in the profession; in the third, he delves into society's responsibility to protect the environment. The publication also features texts from Marx’s collaborators and admirers, including an essay by José Tabacow, partner of Marx in his last projects, and conversations with art critic Jacques Leenhardt.

Résumé:
The question of what heritage is and how we deal with it is not a neutral one. Recent events such as the Black Lives Matter movement and the toppling of monuments have made evident how much the colonial past is inscribed in our built environment; at the same time, colonialism affects memorialization and historiography. Hence, those involved in architectural history are challenged to re-consider their positionality. Whose heritage are colonial sites? Which conflicting memories are attached to them? How are archives and material evidence reassessed to bring forward the stories of marginalized subjects? Following the call for decolonization, this volume explores historical methodologies and shows the entanglement of narratives at architectural sites, bringing together archaeology, architectural history, and heritage studies.

Résumé:
To reduce the building sector’s impact on the climate and the environment, the Brussels-based designers’ collective Rotor has worked these past twenty years on developing ideas about salvaging building materials and retaining preservation of existing buildings. Rotor’s impact is undeniably wide-ranging. Besides generating ecological awareness in the construction sector, they have also pushed boundaries on an operational and logistical level and are helping to build skills by sharing their know-how. Thanks to them, we have also seen a change in mentality in terms of aesthetics. This special issue of A+, with Rotor as guest editors, is a collection of essays that looks critically at material flows and at the challenges of a circular economy for architects today.

Résumé:
"Architecture and retrenchment" explores the "neoliberal turn" in architecture, through the rise and fall of the Swedish welfare state. There are few better case studies of architecture's role in the retrenchment and dismantling of the welfare state than Sweden, the birthplace of the world-famous "Swedish Model" and now home to Europe's fastest-growing inequality. Through eight in-depth architectural case studies, Helena Mattsson analyzes how neoliberalism has created conditions for a new built environment which was once closely integral to the welfare system, examining how new architectural strategies and techniques were developed in order to protect the agency of architecture in a newly re-organised society, and revealing the role of architecture in creating new types of segregation, discrimination, and social stratification.

Résumé:
A persistent narrative portrays the ocean as an uninhabited space. However, centuries of commercial trade and an expanding network of infrastructures above and below the water’s surface have long challenged this view, prompting researchers to conceptualise the sea as an urbanised environment. While the sea is a global arena where architecture, ecology, infrastructure, and politics intersect, its spatial dynamics remain largely uncharted. In a time of planetary urbanisation, ''The Ocean as Ground: An Offshore Theory on Urbanisation'' explores oceans as urban spaces by unveiling forgotten histories, projects, and narratives. How might we understand land urbanisation starting from the oceans? Through the conceptual lens of “ground”, the book invites readers to rethink how we perceive, design, and inhabit the spaces of both land and sea.

International in scope, the book is an A to Z of ideas for the twenty-first century, from a pavilion in Argentina to a forest house in New Zealand, all designed to have minimal architectural traces--made with local materials that harmonize with the surrounding environment. An outdoor care retreat outside Oslo provides space where visitors can benefit from the therapeutic qualities of nature; a residence in Tottori, Japan, adapts with the changing seasons; a treehouse in Cape Town uses cylindrical towers that are elevated on stilts, offering views among the trees; and in Quebec, three geodesic domes were designed as part of an eco-tourism project to highlight the area's natural beauty. Each house is paired with photographs and plans.

Résumé:
First published in 1959, 'The Golden City' is a seminal, critical document that developed one of the earliest and most compelling arguments against the then-dominant hegemony of modernism by reawakening interest in the value of our country’s built patrimony, particularly with respect to its notable classical architecture, classical sculpture, and ornament in the built environment. The book’s argument remains valuable today. 'The Golden City' can be credited with building the constituency for the preservation movement in the United States in general, and in New York City in particular. That constituency coalesced around Reed’s powerful polemic, eventually contributing to the formulation in 1965 of New York City’s groundbreaking Landmark Law, one of the most important milestones in the preservation movement in the United States.

Résumé:
Snohetta - snow cap - is the name of the architecture firm founded in 1989 by architects of different nationalities to deal with architecture, landscapes and everything else related to these fields. The linking of various disciplines on equal footing is at the heart of the work of this internationally active group of "professionals". According to Snohetta, a livable environment and successful architecture can only come about through a common creative process in which much may and must be questioned and constantly reconsidered. A building is thus never just the work of an individual, but the result of many. As complex as its way of thinking, as varied as its projects, this monograph presents all projects that have been published in DETAIL in recent years.

Résumé:
'Building Sharjah' reveals how modern architecture unfurled across the United Arab Emirates’ third-largest city. An oil discovery in 1972 positioned Sharjah as one of the world’s final cities shaped by transformative fortune. In the footsteps of Kuwait, Riyadh, and Dubai, Sharjah faced a metamorphosis: either one that repeated the past’s mistakes or one that reimagined how wealth can build a city. Sharjah’s potential enticed an international cast of experts to create a bold, new city. As their projects begin to vanish, this book preserves them through unseen photographs and recovered documents. New writing chronicles how local and arriving residents arranged the designed, concrete environment into a home. Beyond just a local artifact, this book examines the confident promises made by global practices of urbanization.

Résumé:
What kind of architecture will be born once its primary purpose is serving communities and not capital accumulation? How can we compel the market to factor in the true long-term costs of construction and material production? How can we reduce the sense of abstraction that separates 'consumers' of architecture from the environmental damage wrought at the sites of material extraction? How can communities become fully involved in every stage of the production of architecture, not just its final consumption? This book attempts to frame the problem, and begins the process of delineating alternative paths forward. The first step architects can take towards a more just, harmonious, and non-exploitative designed environment is to redesign themselves, and what the word 'architect' stands for.
