In "Walled states, waning sovereignty", Wendy Brown considers the recent spate of wall building in contrast to the erosion of nation-state sovereignty. Drawing on classical and contemporary political theories of state sovereignty in order to understand how state power and national identity persist amid its decline, Brown considers both the need of the state for legitimacy and the popular desires that incite the contemporary building of walls. The new walls—dividing Texas from Mexico, Israel from Palestine, South Africa from Zimbabwe—consecrate the broken boundaries they would seem to contest and signify the ungovernability of a range of forces unleashed by globalization. Yet these same walls often amount to little more than theatrical props, frequently breached, and blur the distinction between law and lawlessness that they are intended to represent. But if today’s walls fail to resolve the conflicts between globalization and national identity, they nonetheless project a stark image of sovereign power. Walls, Brown argues, address human desires for containment and protection in a world increasingly without these provisions. Walls respond to the wish for horizons even as horizons are vanquished.

The exhibit will include photos, videos and projects that question the notion of contemporary architecture and urbanism that pulls together some of the Urban Think Tanks most consistent propositions. UTT has moved to propose design solutions, to make that crucial passage from protest to project in an effort to make a real impact in Caracas and in Europe and North America, presenting the relevance of their ideas for the Stadtwerk in Salzburg and for a Vertical Gym in Spanish Harlem, New York. ‘Moderating Urban Density’ exhibit shows how negotiation and design can work in the interface between the social conflicts and the production of new urban infrastructures, architecture, and sustainable human environments in the so called “barrios” of the informal mega city.

Even Peter Behrens - before he became the "artistic counselor" to AEG in Berlin in 1908 - tried his hand at designing linoleum patterns, to the point of developing a complete "corporate design" from stationary to catalogs to exhibition architecture for the Anker- Linoleum-Werke at Delmenhorst. Bauhaus architects such as Bruno Taut or Mies van der Rohe used linoleum in housing projects as an inexpensive and hardwearing but also decorative floor-covering. This book is the first to present this historically and ecologically equally important material in its various guises. Experts in the field contributed essays about the history of linoleum, its "discovery" by modernist designers and architects and its renaissance in contemporary design and architecture.

It presents floor plans, large photos, key data, and clear diagrams, providing a comprehensive overview of the solutions being tested today. The publication is rounded off with ten affordable housing concepts that were designed as part of the ''Housing for All'' competition, organized by the Frankfurt Department of Planning and Housing, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, and ABG Frankfurt Holding. Renowned architecture practices based in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and France were invited to submit design concepts for building sites in the Hilgenfeld area of Frankfurt.
