Résumé:
What is density? This question is the starting point of an investigation into the nature of density in the contemporary urban environment. In analysing projects located throughout Europe, the research proposes that density is not about volumetric exploitation, but based on the interaction between three elements: agents, fluxes, and territory. This book documents the findings, detailing individual buildings, cataloguing specific urban forms, and drawing conclusions as to performance and quality, also in an ecological sense. It also offers a case study concerning the former site of the Renault factory in Paris, examining how an experimental opportunity can lead to a vibrant piece of city.

Résumé:
"Racialized incarceration" constitutes a form of sequel to issues 4 (Mar-Apr. 2016, "Carceral environments") and 5 (May-June 2016, "Design & racism"). This issue builds on these two precedents in demonstrating that incarceration is one of the horizons of processes of racialization and that architecture is an unsurpassable instrument of its enforcement. Through historical examples (concentration camps of Romani people in France, prison cities of Japanese and Japanese American people in the United States, an Aborigene prison in Australia) and contemporary ones (US prison industrial complex, immigrant detention centers in Canada, Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon), The Funambulist’s 12th issue intends to illustrate how the violence of colonial and structural forms of racism endure time and materialize in space.

Résumé:
Since September 11, the war on terrorism, and the war in Iraq, it has been almost impossible to dissociate architecture from its social context. Add to this the massive influence of capitalism on architecture, disturbing demographic developments, and associated political, social, and ecological catastrophes, and the result is a robotic snapshot of a society dominated by fear, exclusion, and simulation. Lieven De Cauter, a leading theoretician on the subject of capsularisation, has worked over the past six years on the essays and articles contained in this book, and has documented and analyzed our changing societies before and after 9/11. For the first time, the link between the global economy, demographic changes, world terror, and the role played by the United States under the Bush admisinstration, are examined in detail in a single publication. De Cauter sketches a realistic and alarming account of the new world order that is an everyday concern for the architects and planners of the contemporary city as well as for its inhabitants and users.

Résumé:
This pack includes the four books of the main exhibitions of Lisbon Architecture Triennale 2022, curated by Diogo Burnay and Cristina Veríssimo. ''Cycles'': This book brings together contemporary architectural practices and artists reflecting upon the art of designing cycles, addressing the past and present of construction, relationships to the geopolitics of extractivism, and possible futures for the building industry. ''Multiplicity'': This book features the work of practices from across the globe experimenting in a myriad of ways with architecture. Often working in challenging environmental, social, and political conditions, these practitioners are pushing the boundaries of architectural practice. ''Retroactive'': Through eight essays focusing on pressing issues in the architectural and urban design fields, this book reflects on the challenges and opportunities in addressing broken cities, which fail to provide services and optimal liveable conditions to their inhabitants, and in which one third of humanity dwells. ''Visionaries'': The project ''Visionaries'' – an exhibition and a publication – explores both the process and agents of visionary design production in the age of the next grand narrative.

In "A Landscape of Events", the celebrated French architect, urban planner, and philosopher Paul Virilio focuses on the cultural chaos of the 1980s and 1990s. It was a time, he writes, that reflected the "cruelty of an epoch, the hills and dales of daily life, the usual clumps of habits and commonplaces." Urban disorientation, the machines of war, and the acceleration of events in contemporary life are Virilio's ongoing concerns. He explores them in events ranging from media coverage of the Gulf War to urban rioting and lawlessness. Some will see Virilio as a pessimist discouraged by "the acceleration of the reality of time," while others will find his recording of "atypical events" to be clairvoyant.

'Human zoos', forgotten symbols of the colonial era, have been totally repressed in our collective memory. In these 'anthropo-zoological' exhibitions, 'exotic' individuals were placed alongside wild beasts and presented behind bars or in enclosures. Human zoos were a key factor, however, in the progressive shift in the West from scientific to popular racism."Human Zoos" puts into perspective the 'spectacularization' of the other, a process that is at the origin of contemporary stereotypes and of the construction of our own identities. This is a unique book, on a crucial phenomenon, which takes us to the heart of Western fantasies, and allows us to understand the genesis of identity in Japan, Europe and North America.

Résumé:
Architectural discourse today is characterized by an overlapping conversation between architects and academics, teachers and students, theorists and practitioners. Certain terms-"diagram, " "extreme form, " "autonomy, " and "the generic, " among others-capture the moment in architecture in definition and in operation. "Crib sheets" is a guide-a "crib"-to twenty-two of those buzzwords, framing contemporary currents and trajectories. Each of the words is presented with a list of quotations, or sound bites, arranged in order of length and drawn from more than two hundred commentators, from Charles Baudelaire, Le Corbusier, and Buckminster Fuller to Frank Gehry, Paul Goldberger, and Rem Koolhaas. The structure attempts to evoke the present-day architectural conversation, capturing social milieus, current events, clusters of topics, and even background noise and eavesdropping.

Résumé:
For decades, David Harvey has been teaching Marx's work, particularly Capital, to great acclaim. He has analysed chapter by chapter - sometimes line-by-line - Marx's three volumes and the Grundrisse. This new book opens up the mental universe of that work for a general reader. In ''The Story of Capital'', Harvey takes a synoptic approach to the conceptual architecture as a whole and guides us through the key moments, from labour and technology to the state and geopolitics, via the profit rate, social reproduction, the relationship to nature, fictitious capital and the return of the rentiers. In doing so, Harvey has produced a work which will become a key reference for all those trying to grasp the nature of contemporary capitalism.
