"The edge of the Earth" accompanies a major exhibition at the Ryerson Image Centre in Toronto, and includes works by pioneering and renowned artists such as Edward Burtynsky, Naoya Hatakeyama, Richard Misrach and Robert Rauschenberg; critical propositions on present situations by Chris Jordan, Gideon Mendel and Brandi Merolla; plus visionary works by Jean-Pierre Aube, Adrien Missika, Evariste Richer and Andreas Rutkauskas. Photojournalism from the RIC s Black Star Collection is also included, contextualising artistic reflections within half a century of historical reportage on the environment. The New York based architect Lebbeus Woods – founder of the Research Institute for Experimental Architecture (RIEA) – concerns himself intensively with architectural theory and experimental architecture. His approach is free from the pressures of specific purpose built projects and rather tends to develop visionary projects which integrate research, philosophy, and art. The subject of his exhibition entitled “System Wien” which he developed in collaboration with Christoph a. Kumpusch is the urban structure of the city of Vienna which he plans to interfere in with specific architectural interventions. This publication - published for the exhibition of the same name in the MAK Vienna - documents the various works comprising the "System Wien" project. It develops an idea that the making of architectuere can be understood as the organization of energy. The project explores how energy relations in public and private city spaces might be represented tectonically in the form of drawings and installations; how existing energy elations in the city can be changed by the input tectonically in the form of drawings and installations; and hoe the future of the city need not depend for creative energy input on the development of building projects requiring large capital investments and institutional approval, but rather on the redistribution of energy at the human scale of the street and the room.

Résumé:
The New York based architect Lebbeus Woods – founder of the Research Institute for Experimental Architecture (RIEA) – concerns himself intensively with architectural theory and experimental architecture. His approach is free from the pressures of specific purpose built projects and rather tends to develop visionary projects which integrate research, philosophy, and art. The subject of his exhibition entitled “System Wien” which he developed in collaboration with Christoph a. Kumpusch is the urban structure of the city of Vienna which he plans to interfere in with specific architectural interventions. This publication - published for the exhibition of the same name in the MAK Vienna - documents the various works comprising the "System Wien" project. It develops an idea that the making of architectuere can be understood as the organization of energy. The project explores how energy relations in public and private city spaces might be represented tectonically in the form of drawings and installations; how existing energy elations in the city can be changed by the input tectonically in the form of drawings and installations; and hoe the future of the city need not depend for creative energy input on the development of building projects requiring large capital investments and institutional approval, but rather on the redistribution of energy at the human scale of the street and the room.

Is public space in the contemporary city being privatized and militarized? How can the urban self still be defined? What role does consumer aestheticism have to play in this? These and many more questions are addressed by this uniquely conceived multidisciplinary study. "The Urban Condition" seeks to interfere in current debates over the future and interpretation of our urban landscapes by reuniting studies of the city as a physical and material phenomenon and as a cultural and mental (arte)fact. The Ghent Urban Studies Team responsible for the writing and editing of this volume is directed by Kristiaan Versluys and Dirk De Meyer at the University of Ghent, Belgium. It is an interdisciplinary research team of young academics that further consists of Kristiaan Borret, Bart Eeckhout, Steven Jacobs, and Bart Keunen. The collective expertise of GUST ranges from architectural theory, urban planning, and art history to philosophy, literary criticism and cultural theory.

This Fall 2003 New York exhibition catalogue, drawn from Superstudio's archive and curated in collaboration with members of the group, will revisit its work and trace its influence on subsequent generations of architects. "Superstudio: Life without Objects" collects nearly 200 of the group's most important images, collages, storyboards and critical writings. White monuments crossing over entire landscapes and cities, vast grid groundplanes spreading over infinite beaches populated by wandering hippies: these are some of the more evocative images that consolidated their fame as vanguard architects. In 1972, MoMA invited them to participate in one of the largest exhibitions in its history, built around Italian design and architecture.
