Really important artists situated their work in the master frame of art, well aware of the importance of the material they are using and conscious of questions about paradigms or paradigm shifts in art. This occurs in a special way in the work of Olafur Eliasson and is placed in full view of the observer by the exhibition at the Kunsthaus Bregenz. Eliasson uses nature and the architecture of the building as material : the result is an interplay in flux or a reversal of art and nature. In cooperation with Günter Vogt, landscape architect.

Résumé:
This book, a collaboration between the Victoria and Albert Museum and the University of Westminster, captures the British mosque at a pivotal moment in its history. There are 1,800 mosques in the UK today – mostly converted from terraced houses, libraries, cinemas and supermarkets. Now, these improvised spaces are beginning to disappear, as Muslim communities replace them with purpose-built structures. This timely exploration of the British mosque reveals how ad-hoc adaptations have evolved into a uniquely British-Islamic architecture, tracing its development through waves of twentieth-century migration, and further back to the Orientalist visions of Victorian collectors. Born out of two projects at the Venice Architecture Biennale and the V, ''British mosques'' brings together perspectives from curators, architects and artists. Using approaches ranging from archival study to site-specific installations and 3D scanning, together they tell the story of a hybrid architecture that has quietly found its place in Britain’s urban landscape.

Résumé:
In this first English-language edition of Oscar Niemeyer’s memoirs, the architect reveals how his many passions – among them his large family, many friends, the sensuous landscape of Brazil, women, communism, art and literature – have influenced his life and in turn inspired his architecture. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Niemeyer graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in 1934. As a student he worked in the office of Lucio Costa, and on graduation he began collaborating with Le Corbusier on a new Ministry of Education and Health Building in Rio. Yet in contrast to the International Style, Niemeyer’s curvilinear forms reflected Brazil’s lush, undulating landscape and the emotive style of its music and dance. Here Niemeyer recounts his life in an informal, fluid narrative that moves from his childhood in Rio to friendships with intellectuals and politicians such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Fidel Castro, to tales of adventurous road trips. The book includes forty sketches by Niemeyer executed specially for these memoirs, a chronology of his life and career, notes and an index.

Résumé:
The discipline of landscape architecture encompasses many typologies, from domestic gardens and neighborhood playgrounds to urban designs and state parks. Most critical studies of the discipline tend to approach it from a historical or contemporary perspective organized around criteria such as built versus unbuilt, urban versus peripheral, or competition-sponsored versus commission-based. Very few analyses have been undertaken from the seemingly obvious jumping-off point of size. In "Large parks", Julia Czerniak and George Hargreaves present eight essays by scholars and practitioners that engage large urban parks in depth as complex cultural spaces, where key issues of landscape discourse, ecological challenges, social history, urban relations, and place-making are writ large. From historic parks such as New York's Central Park and Paris's Bois de Boulogne to contemporary projects such as Toronto's Downsview Park and Staten Island's Fresh Kills, to newly unveiled and yet-to-be-built projects such as Ken Smith's ambitious plans for the Orange County Great Park, "Large parks" highlights the complexities and unique considerations that go into designing these massive and culturally significant works.

Résumé:
As sculptor, draughtsman, photographer, and environmental artist, Mary Miss straddles the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and installation art. Her work moves from the urban bustle of New York, to the vast plains of the American Midwest, to the remote forests of Finland, and has been acclaimed worldwide for its poetry and power. Designed in association with the artist, this exquisitely produced monograph, a comprehensive overview of Miss's work, features thirty-five color images and over 150 duotone photographs of her projects accompanied by copious drawings by the artist. Architectural historian Daniel Abramson, who has been granted unparalleled access to the artist and her archives, addresses each of her projects in detail. An introduction by the well-known art critic Eleanor Heartney situates Miss in the context of contemporary movements in art. Architecture critic Joseph Giovannini places her work within contemporary design practice. Together, the text and images of Mary Miss provide a remarkable look at the work of this groundbreaking public artist.

Résumé:
Magnificent Buildings, Splendid Gardens returns to print some of the most important works of David Coffin, a leading authority on Renaissance architecture who, as one of the first scholars to apply the tools of art history to the study of gardens, became a founder of the discipline of garden and landscape studies. These essays span the wide range of Coffin's work, from Italian Renaissance architecture, garden design, sculpture, and drawings to English gardens and landscape designers of the seventeenth to early nineteenth centuries. Coffin's approaches are as varied as his subject matter. Some of these essays present the results of his archival research, including his discovery of crucial documents on the Emilian architect Giovan Battista Aleotti and the only documentary evidence identifying Vignola as the architect of the Villa Lante at Bagnaia. Other essays take a much broader cultural view, investigating, for example, the phenomenon of public access to private Renaissance gardens, elucidating the evolving meaning of images of the goddess Venus in English gardens, and identifying the significance of the decorative programs of monuments as diverse as the Villa Belvedere in Rome and the eighteenth-century gardens at Rousham in Oxfordshire. The book also includes a commentary on each essay, written by one of Coffin's former students; a full analytical index; and a complete bibliography of Coffin's work.

Résumé:
As his firm’s most culturally significant buildings have been recently nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status, A+U features the humane, modern architecture of Alvar Aalto. The Finnish architect’s canon would join that of France’s Le Corbusier and the American Frank Lloyd Wright. His distinctive use of spatial vibrancy, the interaction between his works and the surrounding landscape, and the balance between materials and details — as the issue title suggests — are presented in photographs and narrative descriptions of 12 villas. This compilation is by Finnish architect and art historian Sirkkaliisa Jetsonen and architectural photographer Jari Jetsonen.
