Résumé:
From 1936 to 1943, John Vachon traveled across America as part of the Farm Security Administration photography project, documenting the desperate world of the Great Depression and also the efforts at resistance, from strikes to stoic determination. This collection, the first to feature Vachon's work, offers a record of this photographer's vision and of America's land and people as the country moved from the depths of the Depression to the dramatic mobilization for World War II. Vachon's portraits of white and black Americans are among the most affecting that FSA photographers produced; and his portrayals of the American landscape, from rural scenes to small towns and urban centers, present a remarkable visual account of these pivotal years, in a style that is transitional from Walker Evans to Robert Frank.

It is assumed that every inch of the world has been explored and charted; that there is nowhere new to go. But perhaps it is the everyday places around us—the cities we live in—that need to be rediscovered. What does it feel like to find the city’s edge, to explore its forgotten tunnels and scale unfinished skyscrapers high above the metropolis? Explore Everything reclaims the city, recasting it as a place for endless adventure. Plotting expeditions from London, Paris, Berlin, Detroit, Chicago, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, Bradley L. Garrett has evaded urban security in order to experience the city in ways beyond the boundaries of conventional life. He calls it ‘place hacking’: the recoding of closed, secret, hidden and forgotten urban space to make them realms of opportunity.

Résumé:
In The Aura of a Hole explores the work of A Laurie Palmer an ar tist, writer, and teacher. Her work is concerned, most immediately, with resistance to privatisation, and more generally, with theoretical and material explorations of matter's active nature as it asserts itself on different scales and at different speeds. Her work takes various forms - as sculpture, installation, public projects, and writing. This publication focuses specifically on a decade-long project Palmer undertook - an extended exploration of mineral extraction sites in the US. Through her narration, the project discusses themes of the raw scientific and mechanical aspects of the industry, alongside environmental justice, First Nation rights, industrial agriculture, chemical weapons, low temperature physics, the Cold War, the Iraq War, biotechnology, bio geochronology, nanotechnology, Homeland Security, globalised trade, global warming and unemployment.

What makes this book, bred of a midlife crisis, extraordinary is the way King weaves his autobiography into the account of his collection, deftly demonstrating that the two stories are essentially one. "I lost and found myself in remote topical aisles of scholarship-wreck," he says of his hours in Yale’s library, reading the most obscure books he could find. His hard-won self-awareness gives his disclosures an intensity that will likely resonate with all readers, even those whose collections of nothing contain nothing at all.

Résumé:
As a consequence of demographic change, it is increasingly necessary now and in the future for the architectural profession to rethink the design of residential solutions for aging people and especially those with dementia. With advancing age we are increasingly dependent on a spatial environment that not only has a positive effect on us, but also supports our everyday activities and takes age-related restrictions into account. A focal point of the new requirements is multisensory architecture: color and lighting design, sound design, tactile materials and surfaces, and haptically attractive forms, creating a spatial atmosphere in which the resident feels comfortable, providing security and orientation and fostering motor skills and cognitive abilities. "Building for Dementia" has been developed as a guideline for contemporary and dignified architecture that meets the requirements of people with dementia and views them as an integral part of society.

Résumé:
Walker Evans’ work was spread over forty-six fitful and prolific years, yet in a scant two years, 1935-1936, he produced a singular body of work that defined his career. In the process he refined a hybrid style which combined documentation with sly personal comment. During that brief time he worked for the Farm Security Administration (previously the U.S. Resettlement Administration) photographing the consequences of the Great Depression. He delighted in being the artist traveling incognito as an artless photojournalist, but with the independence to satisfy his own designs. This volume presents those seminal images for the first time as a comprehensive body and in chronological order. These are prime examples of Evans’ alchemy — his seemingly effortless transformation of mundane fact into sweeping lyricism. This series not only defines his mature style but also offers a path for artists of future generations.

Résumé:
An ironic take on the Case Study House Program--initiated in 1945 by Arts and Architecture magazine in an effort to develop low-priced single-family homes --German photographer Peter Bialobrzeski's Case Study Homes was shot at the Baseco compound, a squatter camp near the Port of Manila, which is home to an estimated 70,000 people. As Bialobrzeski was considering the series--startling images of provisional structures fashioned from slats, cardboard, corrugated metal and other cast-off materials and refuse--Lehman Brothers Bank collapsed and the media declared a global economic crisis. These recent events lend resonance to Bialobrzeski's images, which recall the photographs of impoverished rural Americans commissioned by the Farm Security Administration in the 1930s. Conceived as a sketchbook for a larger project, the images evidence the human will to survive and a profound resourcefulness.

Résumé:
War has entered the cities. Since September 11, 2001 at the latest, it has become apparent that this is the case not only in Jerusalem and the Middle East, but also in Western metropolises. This book presents a thorough investigation of the current situation in Jerusalem from a trilateral perspective: Israeli, Palestinian, and international experts air their views. The discussion centers on the production and use of urban space under the conditions created by the conflict, including, for example, the so-called security fence, urban enclaves, exclaves, the approach to monuments and no-man’s-land, and the instrumentalization of infrastructures, which leads to the crass juxtaposition of highly developed and impoverished urban spaces. The conflict, however, does not bring with it destruction and violence alone, but also exhibits ambivalent effects and, along with them, new cultural and urban realities. Jerusalem has become a prototype in the age of new urban violence.

Within the large number of places that comprise the fabric of today’s contemporary urban landscape, public interior venues are taking on an ever growing significance in the face of exterior spaces. Whether in terms of climate, security, leisure or well-being, interiors have naturally incorporated themselves into the daily urban itinerary as part of public activity. The intense social interaction that takes place within these public spaces is concentrated within bars and restaurants, home to flirtations and friendships, entertainment and relaxation, observers and the observed. “Ultimate Restaurant Design” presents over seventy contemporary venues that have been chosen for their innovative interior architecture. Taking in venues from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, the projects are accompanied by full colour photography, detailed plans and insightful descriptions, making this a truly comprehensive survey of some of the most striking restaurant and bar interiors in the world today.

Résumé:
''Object Lessons'' is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Baked potatoes, Bombay potatoes, pommes frites . . . everyone eats potatoes, but what do they mean? To the United Nations they mean global food security (potatoes are the world's fourth most important food crop). To 18th-century philosophers they promised happiness. Nutritionists warn that too many increase your risk of hypertension. For the poet Seamus Heaney they conjured up both his mother and the 19th-century Irish famine. What stories lie behind the ordinary potato? The potato is entangled with the birth of the liberal state and the idea that individuals, rather than communities, should form the building blocks of society. Potatoes also speak about family, and our quest for communion with the universe. Thinking about potatoes turns out to be a good way of thinking about some of the important tensions in our world.
