Résumé:
his is a book about socio-spatial dynamics, the intertwinement of design and politics, and the agency of the architect(s) in rethinking collectivity and collective practices in architecture. In response to the commodification of housing and the ongoing global housing crisis, the publication addresses access to adequate housing as a fundamental human right. It looks at historical and contemporary socially-oriented housing precedents in Norway and Europe to imagine twenty-first- century not-for-profit housing alternatives in Oslo for marginalized populations and diversified family configurations. Beyond formalism, it also argues that innovative architectural solutions in a perspective of systemic societal change need to come from design processes rooted in community, cooperation, and equity. In a later section, the book expands on how radical, emancipatory pedagogies in architecture can facilitate critical thinking and action. The different visions of collectivity put forth here urge spatial practitioners, activists, and students to deeply engage with social justice by means of design and education. With contributions by Paul-Antoine Lucas, Bui Quy Son, Céline Zimmer, Patricia Lucena Ventura, Nagy Makhlouf, Aurélie M. Nzuzi De Mol, Rosaura Noemy Hernandez Romero, María Mazzanti.

Résumé:
Bathing in antiquity elevates a prosaic function to the level of a civic institution for which there is no counterpart in contemporary culture. Enriched by over 500 illustrations, many of them by the author, "Baths and bathing in classical antiquity" is an important sourcebook for this ancient institution. Through hundreds of examples, it reviews and analyzes the structure, function, and design of baths, seeking to integrate their architecture with the wider social and cultural custom of bathing, and examining in particular the changes this custom underwent in Late Antiquity and in Byzantine and Islamic cultures. Yegul explores the complexities of ancient bathing from several points of view. Sociologically, the baths with their vast appeal for all levels of society - were seen as the epitome of democratic ideals and institutions. Politically, they provided the perfect vehicle of propaganda : their lavish and magnificent interiors reflected the might and prosperity of the Roman empire and the apparent generosity of the emperor himself. Architecturally, baths are at the vanguard in the development of Roman building technology. Some of the earliest uses of concrete as a building material and the most innovative applications of the aesthetics of concrete - bold, curvilinear forms, vaults, and domes involved bath buildings. Because of their status as transition between purely utilitarian structures and the more conservative, traditional forms of public and religious architecture, the baths helped to propagate and make acceptable new ideas and new styles in architecture.

Résumé:
We have entered the Anthropocene era—a geological age of our own making, in which what we have understood to be nature is made by man. We need a new way to understand the dynamics of a new epoch. These volumes offer writings that approach the Anthropocene through the perspectives of grain, vapor, and ray—the particulate, the volatile, and the radiant. The first three volumes—each devoted to one of the three textures—offer a series of paired texts, with contemporary writers responding to historic writings. A fourth volume offers a guide to the project as a whole. These volumes constitute an experiment in design and composition as well as content. The mingling of texts and the juxtaposition of different areas of knowledge represented in a variety of forms express the dynamics of a world in change.

Résumé:
Concrete and stone seem made to last forever. But the fact is they develop problems. It is not always as dramatic as the collapse of a section of the roof of the Paris Charles de Gaulle airport in 2004. Gradual changes also occur that may compromise the appearance and structural soundness of buildings constructed with these materials. These changes can be created by efflorescence, thermal stress, weathering, leakage and corrosion. This book explains how to avoid typical kinds of failure. With this in mind, it systematically analyzes cases of damage in contemporary international architecture. It also offers strategies for minimizing the risk of damage. Examples include such high-visibility structures as Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Parco della Musica in Rome and Vontz Center for Molecular Studies in Cincinnatti. In eight chapters, typical kinds of damage are explained and illustrated with examples.

As we myopically gaze at the handsets inches from our face, we are often encouraged by sensible apostles of "objectivity" to try and get some perspective; to zoom out, zoom up, and achieve something like a lofty bird’s-eye view on our situation. e-flux Index #7 floats upward to give an aerial view over the terrain of everything e-flux published between December 2024 and February 2025. This peek through the porthole across three months worth of daily publishing gathers together long-form essays on contemporary culture and architecture, exhibition, book, and film reviews, profiles of artists, critical interjections, fresh translations from the historic avant-garde, and analytical dispatches from live political and social conjunctures. These have been recomposed into eleven thematic sections, to help us get some perspective (however vertiginous) on the present moment and emergent tendencies in critical discourse.

Résumé:
Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca is a key figure in contemporary art. His work is inspired by architecture, dance, film, and cartography. The "Theatre collages" were created between 2003 and 2004 based on plans of famous theatres and opera houses. By carefully reassembling the elements of their interiors, Kuitca transforms their balconies and rows of seats into undulating abstractions and elaborate forms. The predictable regularity of the auditorium seats is broken up by a dynamic rhythm reminiscent of musical notation that plays with the dynamic relationship between the stage and the audience. The second part of the book is dedicated to "The ring" (2003–2004) a four-part series based on Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle. Kuitca used album covers of historic recordings of these operas to create collages that powerfully evoke the voices and the music behind the famous names and titles.

Though during the last century concrete and brick have played the leading role in construction, AV Proyectos 124 takes a stand for wood as a powerful alternative. This view is supported by architects and professors like Óscar Linares, who comments on the seven international projects contained in the dossier; or the Madrid-based team of Elena Orte and Guillermo Sevillano, of SUMA Arquitectura, which we have interviewed here on their pioneering experience using structural timber in Spain. The issue continues with the competition porposals for the remodelling of the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art (SMAK) in Ghent, by David Kohn and noAarchitecten, and the work in process for the new Benin National Assembly in Porto Novo, by Francis Kéré, closing with Luis Fernández-Galiano’s review of Fischer von Erlach’s Project of a Historical Architecture, recently re-edited.

Résumé:
This book chronicles the fourth academic year of the studio led by Kersten Geers at the Academy of Architecture USI in Mendrisio. It was produced as a counterpart to Experiments in Thickness, a book which focused on the work of Giancarlo de Carlo in Urbino. As a means of grappling with that elephant in the room—the modern project—and its perceived failure of good intentions, all the projects gathered here are an update of sorts. Abstract overarching narratives were updated as premises for projects in Milan, De Carlo’s campus in Urbino was updated to accommodate current student population, and unrealised projects in Milan were revived to create a radically contemporary urbanity. But this was not an exercise in nostalgia and retrieval of the lost cause, as much as seeking an opportunity in a modernist ending.

Résumé:
"Art and its institutions" is a reader on current institutional conditions and the role of institutions within artistic processes. With essays by authors and academics such as Beatrice von Bismarck, Andrea Fraser, Simon Sheikh and Jan Verwoert, this book examines the interests of the various institutions involved in the creation of art, and explore the impact these institutions have on the contemporary art world. It covers topics including the impact of the decline of the welfare state on art institutions; the social and physical architecture of art institutions in Nordic states and Eastern Europe; a critical re-evaluation of the institutional critique of the 70s and 90s and the introduction of new models of critique in current artistic practice. The book also documents and discusses two exhibition projects, and examine their relationship to the conflicts and desires provoked by institutions.

Résumé:
"Inside design now" looks at American design in the new millennium, providing a fascinating tour of cutting-edge trends in architecture, interiors, landscape, fashion, graphics, and new media. Featuring eighty emerging and established designers – including 2 x 4, Mike Mills, Peter Eisenman, Fuse Project, Tod Machover, Paula Scher, Jennifer Siegal, and Isaac Mizrahi – "Inside design now" illustrates the most innovative and provocative thinking in design today. Essays explore the role of the designer in today’s culture, contemporary ideas of beauty and functionality, and what the future holds in the realm of design. Sensuous materials, lush patterns, and exquisite details come together with new technologies, pop imagery, and fresh approaches to scale, colour, and construction in the works reproduced in this volume. This book accompanies the exhibition of the same name at the Cooper Hewitt Museum of National Design beginning in April 2003.
