Résumé:
This invaluable reader brings together for the first time the core writings on architecture by key philosophers and cultural theorists of the twentieth century. Issues around the built environment are increasingly central to the study of the social sciences and humanities. The essays offer a refreshing take on the question of architecture and provocatively rethink many of the accepted tenets of architectural theory from a broader cultural perspective. The book represents a careful selection of the very best theoretical writings on the ideas which have shaped our cities and our experiences of architecture.

Résumé:
Ann Pendleton-Jullian tells the story of the Open City in Ritoque, Chile, a designed city still in formation that has no master plan, no imposed ordering devices, and no hierarchical networks of infrastructure. The strange buildings placed among dunes and grasslands reflect instead the mind's translation of urban phenomena and natural phenomena relative to the construction of memory, and a process of composition that is not dependent on stylistic precedents, drawing boards, or academic discourse. Teaching takes place on site and employs poetic methods to activate the design process; the endeavor is considered more important than the result. More than 100 photographs are included, capturing the mystical spirit of the place and of its architecture. With a foreword by Joseph Rykwert.

Résumé:
Vittorio Gregotti's Inside Architecture is his first major work to be translated into English, examining theories of modernism and tradition and considering the architect's practice and cultural issues involved in creating models and working with ideas and buildings. Quite scholarly, but worth the effort for any studying architectural development.

Résumé:
The years shortly after the end of World War II saw the beginnings of a new kind of community that blended the characteristics of suburbia with those of the central city. Over the decades these "edge cities" have become permanent features of the regional landscape. In his book, the author charts the emergence of these areas and explains why and how they developed.

Ways of seeing

Résumé:
"Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak." But there is also another sense in which seeing comes before words. It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but word can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it. The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.
