Résumé:
Nikolai Vavilov anticipated the disappearance of plant diversity and within the space of a few decades through study and travel all over the world he found the means of saving it. For political and ideological reasons, Vavilov was condemned to death and left to starve in the dungeon of a Soviet prison. Gradually, on both sides of the iron curtain, his memory began to fade. One hundred years after Vavilov's first expedition, the photographer Mario Del Curto retraced his footsteps. For four years he met with those who, despite overwhelming obstacles, perpetuate Vavilov's seed prospecting, selection and conservation work in order to save the planet's staple food crops. This book is the unprecedented story of his journey to the heart of the Vavilov Institute and its twelve research stations.

Résumé:
This book documents Totalities, Chris Johanson's recent "contemporary living installation" at Deitch Projects, New York. The theme of the work is the planet Earth and its place in the universe. There is also a meditation on the natural world of plants and animals-how they live within themselves, and how they are affected by humans-with an emphasis on conservation. All of the wood used in the exhibition was recycled, either from New York State, from dumpsters near the artist's Brooklyn studio or from discarded art-shipping crates. The artist even asked his friends and acquaintances for scraps of wood, endeavoring to give his materials a third life. In this volume, he alludes to the degradation of the planet and the beauty of the world through art, reminding us all of our terrestrial responsibilities.

Built and designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe 1928-1930, the Tugendhat House in Brno / Czech Republic is one of the most significant buildings of European modernism. In 2001, UNESCO added the house to the List of World Cultural Heritage Sites. In this third, updated edition, the authors give personal and historic insights relating to the house; also documenting aspects pertaining to art history and conservation-science studies. The comprehensive description and in-depth discussion of the materials used is a special feature in this field of research. The appeal of this monograph lies in the publication of photographs from the family archive which, for the first time, show the house in its lived-in condition. The experimental artistic color photographs by Fritz Tugendhat are among the pioneering achievements of amateur photography.

Résumé:
'Documents on Raphael' is not only a rediscovery project carried out on the five hundredth anniversary of Raphael's death, but above all an operation of re-visioning. Stefano Graziani's photographs explore the works of the artist from Urbino—with particular reference to his output as an architect—their transformation over time, and his own process that translated them into images. Graziani puts variation before permanence and reflects on the very concept of the restoration, the archive, conservation, display, and of course the original, that last so dear to the photographic debate, especially considering that Raphael never saw any of his works as we see them today. Graziani's images, combined with reliable evidence regarding Raphael's production, refer back to the most iconic classical genres of representation: landscape and still life.

Résumé:
Wood was essential to the survival of the Venetian Republic. To build its great naval and merchant ships, maintain its extensive levee system, construct buildings, fuel industries, and heat homes, Venice needed access to large quantities of oak and beech timber. A Forest on the Sea explores the history of this enterprise and Venice's efforts to extend state control over its natural resources. Karl Appuhn explains how Venice went from an isolated city completely dependent on foreign suppliers for wood to a regional state with a sophisticated system of administering and preserving forests. This publication offers a completely novel perspective on how Renaissance Europeans thought about the natural world. It sheds new light on how cultural conceptions about nature influenced political policies for resource conservation and land management in Venice.

Résumé:
The Marburg Building System has been one of the earliest, and is probably one of the internationally best known German building systems. Originally developed by Helmut Spieker for a diploma thesis on university construction at the University of Kiel, and modified for the expansion of the University of Karlsruhe, the construction system was for the first time fully realized in 1961/1962 on the Marburg Lahn Hills. It marks the beginning of a construction boom doubling the building stock of German universities. This publication aims at bringing the building system back to the attention of experts and fans of good architecture. The topic is all the more up-to-date as the University of Marburg was recently declared a building of historic interest and thus protected by built heritage conservation.
