Résumé:
The contributors to this highly original collection of essays explore the relationship between food and architecture, asking what can be learned by examining the (often metaphorical) intersection of the preparation of meals and the production of space. In a culture that includes the Food Channel and the knife-juggling chefs of Benihana, food has become not only an obsession but an alternative art form. The nineteen essays and "Gallery of Recipes" in "Eating Architecture" seize this moment to investigate how art and architecture engage issues of identity, ideology, conviviality, memory, and loss that cookery evokes. The essays are organized into four sections that lead the reader from the landscape to the kitchen, the table, and finally the mouth. The essays in "Place Settings" examine the relationships between food and location that arise in culinary colonialism and the global economy of tourism. "Philosophy in the Kitchen" traces the routines that create a site for aesthetic experimentation, including an examination of gingerbread houses as art, food, and architectural space. The essays in "Table Rules" consider the spatial and performative aspects of eating and the ways in which shared meals are among the most perishable and preserved cultural artifacts. Finally, "Embodied Taste" considers the sensual apprehension of food and what it means to consume a work of art. The "Gallery of Recipes" contains images by contemporary architects on the subject of eating architecture.

Résumé:
"A sustainable bodega and hotel in Rioja" presents the studio of the Yale Edward P. Bass Distinguished Visiting Architecture Fellowship taught by John Spence, entrepreneur and chairman of Karma Resorts worldwide with architect Andy Bow, a senior partner at Foster & Partners in London; environmental engineer Patrick Bellew, principal of Atelier Ten; and Timothy Newton of the Yale faculty. The studio proposed designs for a world-class winery and hotel complex in Rioja, Spain where wineries are both vernacular and exuberant in design. The students were challenged to address social, economic, and environmental sustainability in a holistic and integrated way. The project resulted in a range of strategies to sustainably harvest, engage local workforce, integrate landscape, and source materials responsibly. The project features attractions and symbiotic food production to facilitate tourist visits. Edited by Henry Chan and Nina Rappaport the book is designed by MGMT.design and is distributed by Actar D.

Résumé:
Immigrants in the United States send more than $20 billion every year back to Mexico one of the largest flows of such remittances in the world. With The Remittance Landscape, Sarah Lynn Lopez offers the first extended look at what is done with that money, and in particular how the building boom that it has generated has changed Mexican towns and villages. Lopez not only identifies a clear correspondence between the flow of remittances and the recent building boom in rural Mexico but also proposes that this construction boom itself motivates migration and changes social and cultural life for migrants and their families. At the same time, migrants are changing the landscapes of cities in the United States: for example, Chicago and Los Angeles are home to buildings explicitly created as headquarters for Mexican workers from several Mexican states such as Jalisco, Michoacán, and Zacatecas.
