Résumé:
The last decade has seen the rise of urban design which has taken a central position in the new agendas for urban regeneration and renaissance. Urban design has moved from marginality to mainstream. The principles espoused by urban designers over the past 30 years are now accepted as key to a better urban environment and as we move towards greater sustainability, different ideas are emerging that are challenging some of the accepted urban design norms; urban design is at a watershed. Essays from an international cast of authors review progress and explore emerging ideas: should urban design reflect the future rather than recreate the past? What are the new driving forces that will shape urban living and hence urban design in the future? This book explores new concepts and points the way towards a series of urban design paradigms for the twenty-first century.

Résumé:
Canadian architect Fred Hollingsworth designed his first house in 1946. Since then he has created some of the most innovative homes of the twentieth century. Hollingsworth's home designs incorporate an open floor plan and a keen observance of the flow between the inside and outside environment. Using natural materials with an emphasis on texture and natural lighting, Hollingsworth is one of the few modernist architects who look wholly to organic form as the basis of their design aesthetic. "Living spaces" is a detailed monograph on Hollingsworth's career, revealing how he and a handful of visionary architects pioneered the acclaimed "West Coast Style" and helped establish modern ideals of structure and utility. Through full-page images, architectural plans, and text from the artist himself, this book follows an acclaimed architect from his early days to his most recent achievements that show his continued commitment to innovation.

Victor Gruen became renowned in 1950s America as the "pioneer of the shopping center", then by his urban redevelopment projects as the "savior of the downtowns", and by the mid-1960s as the "architect of the environment". "From Urban Shop to New City" focuses on Gruen's theories and projects, especially with respect to the terms that he set for himself : the return of the city centre and urban public space as a focus of social and cultural life. The context for his vision, however, was the "triumph" of the suburbs and the collapses of American downtown. Gruen's successes and failures engaged or prefigured every important commercial retail, development, and planning trend since World War II ; thus his work is a crucial vehicule for understanding the transformation of American city-scape and landscape, and is a starting point for asking the question : what kind of city do we want?

Résumé:
Richard Long is one of the most compelling and original of contemporary artists. In creating art based on the activity of walking, he has pioneered new ways of thinking about the relationship between the artist and his environment. In the range of his walks and in the scope of his international exhibitions, Richard Long has become an artist of the world, transcending the milieu of the 1960s avant-garde in which he first rose to prominence. Though his individual works are simple, cumulatively they form a body of work that is rich and complex, with a universal character. As Long himself says, ‘…the different forms of my work represent freedom and richness – it’s not possible to say “everything” in one way.’ In this book, Long presents chosen works from some thirty years of his response to landscapes both near and far, and a selection of some of his recent exhibitions.

Résumé:
"Geothermal Larderello" investigates contemporary urbanism by looking at the evolution of human settlement patterns in relation to geothermal energy in Larderello, Italy. Larderello is "off the map," and virtually unknown to Tuscan residents and tourists, but is one of the world's centers of geothermal power research. Alternative futures for this industrial town, which was planned by Giovanni Michelucci in the 1950s, are discussed within the context of sustainability, economics, programming, and environment. In ancient times, the Valley de Cecina was home to a spa and renowned for its healing thermal waters, while in the modern era, this steam was harnessed to generate electricity for district heating and for other uses. Larderello, with its unique landscape of agricultural fields, olive trees, cooling towers, and miles of above-ground steam pipes, is a case study for the possible confluence of geothermal power and urban design issues.

Résumé:
The Limestone Barrens Project is an international multidisciplinary investigation of the limestone cliffs and alvars in three areas: Ontario's Bruce Peninsula, Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula and the Burren in County Clare Ireland. Artists working in lens-based media (photography, video, video projection and video installation), writers, a composer and researchers walked and documented the sites so as to explore links between science, visual art, creative writing, sound and music. The project's publication is a stunning tribute to the fragile nature of these sites and their importance to our environment. Three essays, artist statements, poetry and sound recordings are accompanied by magnificent illustrations by some of the world's most distinguished landscape photographers, notably Marlene Creates, Har-Prakash Khalsa and Greg Staats. Accompanied by an audio CD. Produced in collaboration with Sir Wilfred Grenville College of Art Gallery, Newfoundland and Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Ireland.

Résumé:
This book, devoted to the contributions of the Austro-American artist and architect Friedrich Kiesler to the field of design, presents previously unpublished material relating to his innovative furniture designs and prototypes from the 1930s and 1940s. Letters, diary entries, and photographs document the New York cultural environment in which Friedrich Kiesler lived and worked and illuminate the role he played in the contemporary design scene. After emigrating to New York in 1925, Kiesler soon became an important mediator between European and American positions in the fields of design and architecture. In the ensuing years, he designed furniture and exhibitions and articulated the fundamental principles of a critical theory of functional architecture and design. Such concepts as flexibility, dynamism, and multifunctionality were crucial elements of his theoretical constructs. With an introduction by Monika Pessler, texts by Tulga Beyerle, Harald Krejci, and a preface by Dieter Bogner and Heinz F. Hofer-Wittmann.

Résumé:
"City making 101" is a card game and reference resource for designers and “citizen designers” to imagine, discuss and share ways to realize livable, lovable and walkable cities. The game approach offers each player a dynamic pathway into the complexity of city making. Players gain a base of knowledge about city design and, through reading, reflection, and debate, use the cards to produce a customized design guideline per their priorities and aspirations. Framed under six categories, the 101 topics focus on fundamental domains of the public realm. Players imagine their ideal urban environment, debate issues on planning and public space, then build consensus on the design guidelines needed to realize their vision, taking into account best practice standards and performance parameters. The game opens up space for conversations, debates on priorities, stakeholder accountability and open-ended proposals on complex physical, social and economic issues.

Résumé:
Since 2008, German photographer Winfried Bullinger (born 1965) has traveled around Eastern and Central Africa, capturing the vernacular architecture of these regions. In this physical archive of his long-term project, Bullinger portrays a diverse array of African pastoralists’ homes, including tents, open dwellings and huts. Despite their variety, the structures are all made from materials available directly on site; they are radically efficient and sustainable. Implementing a silver-gelatin technique, Bullinger shoots with a large-format camera and honors the capricious natural light of day. Although he captures few inhabitants in his images, Bullinger records their many traces. Indeed, his photographs are born from a dialogue with the inhabitants and reveal architecture as a direct response, refined over centuries, to a people’s specific environment and culture. Bullinger’s conscientious formal and interpersonal decisions culminate in this valuable record of rapidly disappearing African architectural heritage.

Résumé:
The aim of this book is thus to provide new methodologies and to suggest new meanings for the comprehension and development of contemporary architecture. In Baudrillard’s terms, architecture could be seen as the supreme medium of contemporary visual culture, especially in its potential to influence the individual’s perception of reality as a component of the mass-media system. This kind of cultural analysis of the built environment and its effect on everyday life is still a relatively new phenomenon – both in the fields of critical theory and even more so in mainstream architectural criticism. This book, which forms a significant resource on the work of an immensely important writer, should appeal to a wide range of readers. Through highly evocative writing, it provides a theoretical, illuminating pathway for everyone who, either directly or indirectly, is involved or interested in architecture, urbanism and related subjects.
