"Healed outcomes" is a symbolic issue for The Site Magazine. It marks a break from our past and the numeration we have used for the last twenty years, and initiates our first series. This series will be published over the next three years and each issue will build on those preceding to explore how architecture can address today’s most pressing challenges. This first issue has long been in the works. Influenced by our discussions with Juhani Pallasmaa, who writes, "We are in constant dialogue and interaction with the environment, to the degree that it is impossible to detach the image of the self from its spatial and situational existence," it was clear to us that the inextricable relationship between space and consciousness was a natural starting point for any ongoing discussion about architecture’s role in the world. Without question, the offering of spaces for individual and collective healing is a role that architecture has maintained over time and across cultures.

In the East Falls neighbourhood of Philadelphia, just beyond the northern boundary of the Thomas Jefferson University's East Falls campus, stands the Hassrick House (1958-61), designed by celebrated architect Richard Neutra, an icon of mid-century modern style. Thomas Jefferson University's relationship with the house began in the summer of 2015 when Andrew Hart, assistant professor of Architecture in the College of Architecture & the Built Environment initiated a series of summer courses to study the house. This publication chronicles the students' findings that shed light on Neutra's design process, his collaboration with his clients, as well as the unsung role of Thaddeus Longstreth as Neutra's proxy negotiator throughout the design and construction stages. During its approximately 63-year lifespan, the Hassrick House tells a saga of design, dwelling, neglect, restoration, and reinvention today as a laboratory for learning. In many respects, the history of the Hassrick House tells an important story of the modernist movement in the US, both regionally and nationally.

Anyone viewing what we call a “landscape” from a distance will recognize that it is an artifact, a habitat created by humans as part of our built environment. Mutation and Morphosis looks at all the many aspects involved in the collective process of designing and shaping landscapes, from planning to implementation. The model as a tool and the collection as a driving force are illustrated on the basis of an astonishing variety of topics. In theoretical discussions and the examination of detailed dossiers of facts on the ground, a trajectory is traced: from the emergence of new landscapes as a result of climate change to the migration of the wolf to Central Europe, from the impact of invasive plants to the study of geological formation processes. The panorama that unfolds gives us insights into the broad context that landscape architects must consider in their work, exemplified by the outstanding projects realized by VOGT.

Anyone viewing what we call a “landscape” from a distance will recognize that it is an artifact, a habitat created by humans as part of our built environment. Mutation and Morphosis looks at all the many aspects involved in the collective process of designing and shaping landscapes, from planning to implementation. The model as a tool and the collection as a driving force are illustrated on the basis of an astonishing variety of topics. In theoretical discussions and the examination of detailed dossiers of facts on the ground, a trajectory is traced: from the emergence of new landscapes as a result of climate change to the migration of the wolf to Central Europe, from the impact of invasive plants to the study of geological formation processes.
