Thijsse Park in Amstelveen in the Netherlands, have been important sources of inspiration for landscape architects, gardeners, and nature lovers throughout the world since they were first laid out over fifty years ago. This new book looks at the extraordinary history of these parks and the work of the landscape architect Christiaan Broerse and his colleague, the botanist Koos Landwehr. It also details Broerse and Landwehr’s creative and highly original use of a great variety of native plants in these parks. Bekkers analyses the parks as integral elements of Amsterdam’s urban expansion plans and demonstrates how successfully Broerse and Landwehr resolved the tension between the conservation movement and city planners. He shows too how interest in the Amstelveen heem parks have grown over time. These parks have played a key role, for instance, in the increasing emphasis on the use of native plants in the layout of green areas. The book is richly illustrated, with specially commissioned full-colour photographs by Jan Derwig and aerial photographs by Jan Schot. Also included are historical illustrations and sketches.

Martin’s formative years, however, have been largely overlooked. People think of parks as public or common land, and it is a common belief that parks are the best uses of land and are good for everyone. But no park is innocent. Parks are lionized as "natural oases," and urban parks as "pure nature" in the midst of the city -- but that's absurd. Parks are as "natural" as the roads or buildings around them, and just as political. Every park in North America is performing modernity and settler colonialism everyday. Furthermore, parks are not private property, but while they are called ''public'', they are highly regulated spaces that normatively demand and closely control behaviours. Parks are a certain kind of property, and thus creations of law, and they are subject to all kinds of presumptions about what parks are for, and what kinds of people should be doing what kinds of things in them. Parks- as they are currently constituted- are colonial enterprises.

For the sheer quantity and quality of his inventions, scientist and structural engineer Vladimir Shukhov (1853–1939) is sometimes referred to as the “Russian Thomas Edison.” Among his pioneering contributions are a number of innovations related to the oil industry, including the design and construction of the first Russian pipeline and the world’s first industrial plant for oil cracking. His groundbreaking structural works include the cable-supported hanging roof and the hyperboloid lattice tower epitomized by the Shukhov Tower in Moscow, which bears his name. Networks of Construction collects Shukhov’s trailblazing achievements from the turn of the twentieth century, exploring his career and complicated creative process. Each of Shukhov’s projects, the book shows, was realized through an elaborate process beginning with an intense period of planning to account for the interconnections among a wide range of factors, from the technical background of the construction workers to technology transfer, the nomenclature of steel grades, and the scientification of construction knowledge. Ekaterina Nozhova and Uta Hassler of the Institute of Historic Building Research and Conservation at ETH Zurich have painstakingly reconstructed Shukhov’s process through a wealth of drawings, photographs, and documents.
