Would it lose something of its meaning (not to mention the books off the shelves), if you picked it up and placed it elsewhere? Is it even possible for a building to have no relation whatsoever to the place where it is erected? Is it pointless to talk about architecture as a pure intellectual enterprise, without grounding it in its surroundings? These are among the important questions raised by the German architecture scholar Florentine Sack in this exploration of the philosophical, aesthetic, and subjective links between a building and its environment. Drawing upon traditions as old as that of the Japanese house through models of classical Western modernism, she brings the notion of unity to bear on contemporary architecture, referring to exemplary buildings by Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Zumthor, Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa, and many others.

"Poetic imaginations" at Aedes stages a chapter on Zhu Pei’s handling of the ‘collective historical experience’, topography, function and contemporary context of a location. The exhibition presents six representative cultural buildings that, despite their different functions and surroundings, are related to one another by characteristic structures, materials and architectural forms. Based on impressively crafted architectural models, sketches, documentary films and publications, the process of creating these examples is presented in greater depth. While the built environment in China has undergone rapid transformation, Zhu Pei has reflected on historical-philosophical ideas of harmony between people and nature and weaving traditional architectural knowledge into contemporary spatial solutions. His conceptual considerations are based on elements from the tradition of Shan Shui painting, which is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. It is a particular form of landscape painting whose indispensable components are mountains and water. It shows and teaches a mode of perception that regards us as human beings not as an antithesis to, but instead as part of "nature."

In 1966, Billy Klüver and Fred Waldhauer, engineers at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, New Jersey, teamed up with artists Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman to form a nonprofit organization, Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.). E.A.T.’s debut event, 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering, integrated art, theater, and groundbreaking technology in a series of performances at the 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan. Its second major event, the Pepsi Pavilion at Expo ’70 in Osaka, Japan, presented a multisensory environment for the first world exposition held in Asia. At these events, and in the hundreds of collaborations E.A.T. facilitated in between, the participants—including John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, and David Tudor—imagined innovative ways for art and science to intersect and enrich society. "Sensing the future" tells the story of these collaborations between artists and engineers and how they led to new installations and technology-based artworks.

In 1966, Billy Klüver and Fred Waldhauer, engineers at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, New Jersey, teamed up with artists Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman to form a nonprofit organization, Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.). E.A.T.’s debut event, 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering, integrated art, theater, and groundbreaking technology in a series of performances at the 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan. Its second major event, the Pepsi Pavilion at Expo ’70 in Osaka, Japan, presented a multisensory environment for the first world exposition held in Asia. At these events, and in the hundreds of collaborations E.A.T. facilitated in between, the participants—including John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, and David Tudor—imagined innovative ways for art and science to intersect and enrich society. "Sensing the future" tells the story of these collaborations between artists and engineers and how they led to new installations and technology-based artworks.
