The story starts with the city's design competition, won by Swiss landscape architect Guido Hager, and follows the planning and construction process right up to the park's opening in 2008. Hager's plans considered every possible constituency for the park - families, singles, young, old, women, men - and how they would be woven into the neighborhood, an inner-city district of Vienna under intense redevelopment. The book even includes a section on the plant material chosen, and how it will appear season-by-season.

Résumé:
Mien Ruys, who worked mostly in the Netherlands for almost 60 years, was one of the most influential landscape architects of the 20th Century. A leading proponent of modernist design, she introduced clean lines, geometric shapes and innovative materials. One of the few women members of CIAM, she collaborated regularly with architects including Aldo van Eyck and Gerrit Rietveld, often on much needed social housing schemes. Uniquely, she combined this modernist approach with an extensive knowledge of plants and planting, which she learnt in her father’ s Royal Moerheim Nursery in Dedemsvaart. At the nursery, she met Gertrude Jekyll - who greatly influenced Mien as she developed her own loose, natural style of planting - and created 30 experimental gardens from which lessons which can still be learnt.

Résumé:
In Cornelia Hahn Oberlander: Making the Modern Landscape, Susan Herrington draws upon archival research, site analyses, and numerous interviews with Oberlander and her collaborators to offer the first biography of this adventurous and influential landscape architect. Born in 1921, Oberlander fled Nazi Germany at the age of eighteen with her family, going on to become one of the few women to graduate from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design in the late 1940s. For six decades she has practiced socially responsible and ecologically sensitive planning for public landscapes, including the 1970s design of the Robson Square landscape and its adjoining Provincial Law Courts—one of Vancouver’s most famous spaces. Herrington places Oberlander within a larger social and aesthetic context, chronicling both her personal and professional trajectory and her work in New York, Philadelphia, Vancouver, Seattle, Berlin, Toronto, and Montreal.

Résumé:
The Second World War came hard on the heels of a devastating Depression in which families struggled to survive. Life on the Home Front paints a poignant portrait of a city coping with the demandsof war. Montrealers, along with other Canadians, were being asked for more sacrifice but this time it would include sending their sons, brothers, fathers and husbands off to war. Montrealers had to “Use it Up, Wear it Out, Make it Do, and Do Without” as one slogan cautioned, and this they did. Many women went to work for the firsttime and often enjoyed the heady success of doing “a man’s job” and earning a regular salary. Life on the Home Front describes how dissent was also an ever-present reality. Montreal was often awash with anti-war banners and angry speeches which kept the police and journalists busy. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King had to walk a fine line in keeping the country together and united at a time of grave crisis.

Résumé:
This book reveals that historic sites and buildings have much to tell us about women's history. It documents women's contributions to the historic preservation movement at places such as Mount Vernon and explores women's history at several existing landmarks such as historic homes, as wells as in a wider array of cultural landscapes ranging from nurses' residences in Montreal to prostitutes' quarters in Los Angeles. The book includes essays on six exemplary projects that have advanced the integration of women's history into historic preservation and closes with three perspectives on preservation policy and practice. National in scope but applicable in any locality, Restoring Women's History through Historic Preservation combines the most important recently published information with the best new research and covers many national, state, and local initiatives of the past decade. It collects in one volume the seminal work of twenty academic historians, preservationists, and professionals at parks and monuments throughout the country who examine practical ways to represent women's history through historic preservation programs. Over the past several decades, work in the areas of women's history and historic preservation has done much to change not only how we regard history but also how we might broaden the very notion of what we consider historical. This volume reflects a growing commitment to historic preservation and shows how practitioners in both fields can benefit from an exchange of insights and create more effective public history.

Résumé:
This book offers intersectional, intergenerational, and international perspectives on nonfiction film- and videomaking by and about women, examining practices that range from activist documentaries to avant-garde experiments. Concentrating primarily on the period between the 1970s and 1990s, the contributions revisit major figures, contexts, and debates across a polycentric, global geography. They explore how the moving image has been a crucial terrain of feminist struggle—a way of not only picturing the world but remaking it. The contributors consider key decolonial filmmakers, including Trinh T. Minh-ha and Sarah Maldoror; explore collectively produced films with ties to women's liberation movements in different countries; and investigate the cinematic expressions of tensions and alliances between feminism and anti-imperialist struggles. They grapple with the need for a broader more inclusive definition of the term ''feminism''; meditate on the figure of the grandmother; reflect on realist aesthetics; and ask what a feminist film historiography might look like.

Résumé:
The complex legacy of this most notable period is discussed from a different perspective by each contributor. Peter S. Reed details the rise of modern architecture during the war—housing designs that used the latest ideas in prefabricated construction methods, lightweight materials, innovative technologies, and a corporate and institutional aesthetic that helped popularize modernism as the appropriate image of American industrial might and corporate success. Robert Friedel documents the development of new materials, especially plastics, and discusses techniques for employing traditional materials in novel ways. Margaret Crawford explores the struggle of women and blacks for public housing. Finally, Michael Sorkin, architect and writer, explores the migration of certain values and aesthetics from the necessities of war to the choices of peace. Among these are images of speed, camouflage, ruin, totalization, and flight.

Résumé:
Founded by architect Walter Gropius (1883–1969) in 1919, the Bauhaus was the 20th century’s most influential school of art, architecture, and design. After the school was shuttered under pressure from the Nazis in 1933, many Bauhaus artists brought their innovative practices and teaching methods to the United States. Gropius himself accepted a position at Harvard, where he would help establish a collection of Bauhaus material that has since grown to more than 30,000 objects—the largest such collection outside Germany. Harvard in turn became an unofficial center for the Bauhaus in America. Written by established and emerging voices in the field, the scholarship presented here expands on the special link between the two institutions, while highlighting understudied aspects of the Bauhaus, such as weaving, photography, and art made by women. Accompanied by illustrations—some of never-before-published objects—this book yields fascinating insights for Bauhaus devotees and design aficionados.

The Arts and Crafts movement in architecture, interior design, and decorative arts reached its peak between 1880 and 1910 in Britain and North America. The movement’s emphasis on aesthetic quality and a high level of craftsmanship, promoted as an antidote to the ubiquity and uninspired appearance of machine-produced products, remains much admired today. Arts and Crafts enjoyed special resonance in Chicago, the home of Jane Addams’s Hull House, where immigrants and women received training in handicraft skills not only to beautify domestic life but also to provide them with viable, honorable work.

In 2010, Sejima and Nishizawa co-curated the 12th International Architecture Exhibition at the Biennale. Hans Ulrich Obrist caught up with Sejima on several occasions throughout the past few years. They discussed her built and unbuilt projects, her collaborations with other architects and artists and the changing role of women within architecture.
