Résumé:
The new de Young museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park has been designed by the Swiss firm of Herzog & de Meuron. This book is a case study in design and urban planning, documenting the complex five-year process that has resulted in this outstanding contribution to contemporary museum architecture. Founded by San Francisco Chronicle publisher Michael de Young, the museum's permanent collection includes the art of Africa, Oceania and traditional cultures of the Americas; American painting and sculpture from the colonial period to the present; and both Western and non-Western textiles. After the museum was damaged in a 1989 earthquake, its fate became the focus of intense public debate, in which issues of environmental sensitivity and the role of cultural institutions in urban parks were paramount. Illustrated with colour photographs as well as plans, drawings and models, this book traces the architects’ creative process in detail. Principal photography by Mark Darley.

Résumé:
Thomas Schütte has frequently cast himself into the role of a maverick - remained remote from the work of his artistic mentor, distanced himself from the statements of each ephemeral Zeitgeist and increasingly contradicted his own positions - and in so doing has become one of the most influential artists of his generation. Shifting from text to image to object to book, his work juxtaposes biographical moments with contemporary events, oscillates between the aspiration to shape the public reception of architecture and monumental sculpture and the conjunctive of model-maker, and projects avant-garde ideas onto traditional forms of art. With meticulous rigor, Ulrich Loock has observed the evolution of Schütte’s output over the past 25 years. Underpinning his lucid overview is a series of intensive discussions between the author and artist on the genesis and history of particular works. This well-designed book is the most comprehensive monograph of the artist’s work to date, and provides profound insight into Schütte’s work through detailed discussions of the pieces.

Résumé:
This ambitious collection treating the Italian Fascists’ appropriation of the past for political purposes focuses on the role of the visual in the aim of fusing the past and the modern world in Mussolini’s Italy. With contributions by art historians and classicists, literary and intellectual historians, "Donatello among the Blackshirts" demonstrates that the Fascist regime appropriated not only Italy’s ancient Roman past but also the medieval, Renaissance, and even baroque eras, as well as its own recent history, in constructing a new myth of the nation. Every aspect of visual culture—from monumental architecture, sculpture, painting, and gardens to exhibitions, spectacles, films, medals, household items, and stamps—helped to link the past with modernity. As a result, Italy’s artistic traditions became familiar to all social classes throughout the peninsula. While this richly illustrated book concerns Fascist Italy, at the same time it also shows how Italy’s premodern artistic traditions have been passed down to the present through the filter of the Fascist era.

Following the legacy of Rosalind Krauss, EXPANDED FIELD: Installation Architecture Beyond Art by Ila Berman and Douglas Burnham explores the realm of art and architecture across a broad terrain of installation practices, revealing a critical territory that, despite its exuberant proliferation, has been historically defined as a negativity: the progeny of that which is both not-architecture and not-art. Within this book, a wide range of art and architectural works are positioned and mapped as constellations within a newly expanded field suspended between Architecture, Interiors, Sculpture, and Landscape. These four terms are the initial reference points used to elaborate a more extensive taxonomical framework defining twelve distinct territories where the analytical drawings and photographic indexes of seventy-five installation projects are situated. The expanded field diagram is a conceptual framework that operates on many levels. It acts as a lens through which to theorize and classify the trajectories of current installation practices and serves as an infrastructure to organize the content of the book.

Résumé:
Disapproved of by the critics and extremely nonconformist, Carlo Mollino expressed himself through his architectural designs, his furniture and interiors, in a language assimilated from futurism and surrealism. The influence of architects ranging from Gaudí to Mendelsohn, from Aalto to Le Corbusier, can be seen in his highly individual designs. Projects such as the sledge-lift station at Lago Nero, the Teatro Regio in Turin and the Lutrario ballroom demonstrated his exceptional powers of imagination. The interaction between Mollino’s professional activities and his many interests, which included aeronautics, downhill racing, set design and eroticism. With the demolition of his massive masterpiece, the Ippica in Turin, and the destruction of his most prestigious interiors, all that remains today of Mollino’s work is his furniture. Drawing on rare photographs and documents, this important monograph reconstructs Mollino’s work through more than eighty interiors and pieces of furniture spanning his career, pieces built with such bravura that they often resemble sculpture more than works of industrial design.

Résumé:
The Genovese architect Renzo Piano has designed a museum building — the Zentrum Paul Klee on the outskirts of Bern. Piano was convinced from the outset that he would find the answers to his own questions in the art of Paul Klee. The Center, says Piano, is dedicated to the “poet of silence,” and thus it was only fitting to consider building a museum that would speak softly. Renzo Piano was also inspired by the identity of the location and the gentle, undulating lines of the terrain. The Zentrum Paul Klee rises upward in the form of three hills connected by a 150-meter-long thoroughfare, the “Museumsstrasse” within the museum complex. It is a harmonious yet prominent landscape sculpture featuring a steel construction that supports the roof. In this documentation, Benedikt Lodererprovides a precisely detailed description of Renzo Piano’s architectural idea. With the aid of numerous photographs, design sketches, plans, and models, this book presents an image of a building and its architectural history.

Résumé:
Since the early 1960s, William Christenberry has plumbed the regional identity of the American South, focusing his attention on Hale County, Alabama, from which he hails. Although Christenberry is most often associated with and recognized as a pioneer in the field of American color photography, his vision is multifaceted and rendered through an unorthodox mix of media that includes sculpture, drawing, painting, and found-object assemblage. Christenberry’s theme, however, is singular : the history, the very story of place, is at the heart of his project. Christenberry’s poetic documentation of vernacular architecture, signage, and landscape captures moments of quiet beauty in a sometimes mythic terrain that, with its iconography and buildings turned ramshackle. Since relocating to Washington, D.C., in 1968, Christenberry has dutifully returned to photograph the same locations annually - the green barn, the palmist building, the Bar-B-Q Inn, among others - fulfilling a personal ritual and documenting the physical changes wrought by the passing of a year. With a foreword by Elizabeth Brou.

Résumé:
Saarinen's buildings are famous worldwide: the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the TWA terminal in JFK Airport, Dulles Airport, outside Washington D.C., the CBS Building in New York, the General Motors Technical Center in Michigan, the US Embassy in London, and many other landmarks. Equally celebrated are his furniture designs, including the Tulip Table and Womb Chair. While Saarinen's exuberant, even expressionistic, forms were lightning rods for many critics, his unique personal style is now much admired, making him a key figure for many designers practicing today. Saarinen's was a career of innovation. His airport terminals combined the poetry of sculpture with daring structural feats and raganizational genius; his pioneering industrial complexes for GM, IBM, and Bell Labs brought rational modernism to corporate America; and his furniture and residential buildings conveyed an optimistic, humane vision for the future. This illustrated monograph spans Saarinen's entire career, including his drawings, models, most important built works, and furniture.
