He carries us from a window in Roland Park to the triumphal arch of Constantine in Rome, from a stairway at the Maryland Institute to the Doge's Palace in Venice, from a vine at the Baltimore museum of art to Shakespeare. Eugène Atget, Jacques Henri Lartigue, André Kertész, Brassaï, Henri Cartier- Bresson, Robert Doisneau—some of the greatest photographers of Paris—were relatively unknown when they began their most innovative work. Not yet burdened with conventional career expectations, they found the city the perfect environment in which to invent and develop an entirely new approach to conceiving the photographic image. In the 1920s and 1930s, the generation of photographers after Atget responded not only to the physical city itself but also to a new sensibility of time as a spontaneous act. Masterworks by these now-famous visionaries of the medium are featured in this book of photographs of Paris from the 1850s to the 1950s, drawn from the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. David Travis introduces the book with an essay on how these photographers inherited the culture of walking in and observing Paris from Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Charles Baudelaire, and the boulevard flâneurs of the late nineteenth century. Their acceptance and celebration of the fluidity of the city’s street life became the chief virtue of their profession as photojournalists for the new illustrated magazines that would eventually make them famous.

On the eve of Plunz’s status as Emeritus at Columbia University, "New York global" bridges five decades of his pedagogical commitment to question the cannons of the design and urbanism fields and their relationship to the contemporary built environment. Global urbanization serves as a backdrop for a heightened consideration of the intermingling of housing, infrastructure, and pedagogy, as he negotiates the evolution of mainstream theory and praxis in architecture and planning. Through interviews, syllabi excerpts, essays, discussions, and projects, New York City is projected as a lens for understanding the potential for metropolises everywhere to serve as firewalls against dystopic social inequities and ecological adversity. Shot during the course of countless trips to urban and rural areas across the country, many of them made by car (the driver's window sometimes providing Friedlander with an extra frame), these pictures capture an America as unblemished by romanticized notions of human nature as it is full of quirky human touches. Nevertheless, man's presence is not at stake here; streets, roads, façades, and buildings offer their own visual intrigue, without reference to their makers. The exhibition takes as its point of departure three contexts in which space occupies a central position: Sigmund Freud’s notion of “das Unheimliche” and psychoanalytical elaboration of space and its emotion; Michel Foucault’s other spaces – heterotopias and their counter-site qualities of socio-political implications; and Walter Benjamin’s outmoded and repressed space with all its auratic traces (fake or authentic) of philosophical and historic charge. “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” aims to exploit the psychological associations of space with its multiplicity of emotional overtones, mapping its extremes and its psychic environment. Focusing on spatial pathologies (agoraphobia, vertigo, claustrophobia...), the exhibition identifies space as a cause of mental disorder, fear or estrangement, ultimate trauma. Hysteria, panic and neurosis overlap with other spatial stories of psychic unrest and unease: distortions and perversions (warped space); anxiety and enigmas (haunted space); spatial inconvenience and discomfort, perfectly domestic and yet alienating; space half-spoken, half-pronounced: a promise, a puzzle, a magic spell, temptation.

The exhibition takes as its point of departure three contexts in which space occupies a central position: Sigmund Freud’s notion of “das Unheimliche” and psychoanalytical elaboration of space and its emotion; Michel Foucault’s other spaces – heterotopias and their counter-site qualities of socio-political implications; and Walter Benjamin’s outmoded and repressed space with all its auratic traces (fake or authentic) of philosophical and historic charge. “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” aims to exploit the psychological associations of space with its multiplicity of emotional overtones, mapping its extremes and its psychic environment. Focusing on spatial pathologies (agoraphobia, vertigo, claustrophobia...), the exhibition identifies space as a cause of mental disorder, fear or estrangement, ultimate trauma. Hysteria, panic and neurosis overlap with other spatial stories of psychic unrest and unease: distortions and perversions (warped space); anxiety and enigmas (haunted space); spatial inconvenience and discomfort, perfectly domestic and yet alienating; space half-spoken, half-pronounced: a promise, a puzzle, a magic spell, temptation.

This first thinking stage can lead to the unearthing of surprising solutions that are considerably more sustainable than what has been the norm until now. Real estate is still too often thought of as a question of meeting the demand for floor space in square meters (or feet, depending)--and little else. Buildings that Last includes examples of studies into the construction of offices for 2040, when buildings will hopefully have an environmental impact that is 95% less than was the norm at the end of the last century. Given the sheer size of their output, it is impossible not to be confronted regularly with projects by Zwarts & Jansma. The major infrastructure works like bridges, viaducts, tunnels, stadiums and sports complexes loom large in our daily environment. What we often do not see is how ingeniously this work fits together and what processes brought it to that stage. In a conversation with collegue-architect Philippe Samyn this aspect is discussed in particular. Zwarts and Jansma themselves also describe in this book their often unusual sources of inspiration and motive forces. Yet for all that, the design process they follow is a rational one that since the 1980s has consistently featured the computer as a design resource. The book gives a complete overview of the work of Zwarts & Jansma Architects. A selection of thirty works are fully documented in site plans, floor plans, sections and details and of course text, plus photographs taken specially for this book by Rob 't Hart.
