Dutch artist Aernout Mik's moving-image installations meld filmmaking, sculpture and architecture into experiences that are at once compelling and unsettling, irrational yet plausible. The artist designs and constructs architectural spaces that hold his moving images, making the viewer's physical relationship to the piece a critical component of the overall experience. By interrogating the most basic ideas of narrative and reality and rejecting classical cinematic ideals, Mik creates works that are rich in allusion but subversive of codes. Published to accompany the artist's first U.S. retrospective, this volume is a vivid exploration of Mik's work and process. Laurence Kardish, MoMA's Senior Curator in the Department of Film, situates Mik within the history of documentary and nonnarrative cinema, while Michael Taussig, Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University, investigates the ways in which the artist's work changes the way we see reality while simultaneously reinforcing the norms of visual culture. Abundantly illustrated with stills and the artist's own drawings, the book also features detailed descriptions of the installations, an exhibition history and a bibliography, making it the most comprehensive volume on the artist available in English.

Public parks are among the most important open spaces in our cities, and contribute decisively to their character. They fulfil ecological, social and urban design requirements, and upgrade adjacent neighbourhoods and even whole city districts. New parks are being built all over Europe, in the hearts of cities or out in the periphery, as in the case of Invalidenpark in Berlin and Thames Barrier Park in London, respectively. Some, such as Park André-Citroën, Paris, serve purely recreational purposes. Others, namely the sculpture garden of the Kröller-Muller Museum Park in the Netherland, are devoted to art or to botanic abundance, as the Botanical Garden in Barcelona. The creation of such extensive new green spaces is always the subject of public and professional discourse, no matter whether this concerns La Villette in Paris, Duisburg-Nord Lanscape Park in the Ruhr, or the new park at Munich's old airport in Riem. According, the compact survey is rounded off by theoretical discussion. Based on essays published in "Topos - European landscape magazine" between 1993 and today, the resulting collection of familiar and less-known parks from many European countries provides an excellent overview of current approaches to park and park design.

Résumé:
A true Renaissance man with a clear, unified aesthetic vision, the Swiss artist, designer, architect and writer Max Bill combined the virtues of homo faber and homo ludens throughout his intensely productive career, launching the Concrete art movement and establishing himself as the single most decisive influence on postwar Swiss graphic design. This gorgeously designed, hefty volume—the most thorough Bill overview ever published in English, and the only monograph in print—presents Bill’s oeuvre both chronologically and thematically, across every facet of his multifaceted oeuvre: painting, graphic art, sculpture, architecture, book and magazine design, industrial and furniture design, graphic design and advertising typography—from large-format posters to small inserts in periodicals—as well as his designs for exhibition spaces. Bill stands out for his enormous influence on Latin American geometric art (through his 1951 retrospective at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art), as well as for his essays, his work as an educator and his political and social concerns. All these aspects of his life and work are covered in this profusely illustrated catalogue, along with essays by scholars and a selection of previously unpublished essays by Bill himself.

Résumé:
Spanning the full career of Picasso (1881–1973), from his first cut drawings made in 1899 at nine years of age through to the 1960s with works he made in his eighties, ''Picasso cut papers'' features some of the artist’s most whimsical and intriguing works made on paper and in paper, alongside a select group of sculptures in metal, wood and ceramic. Although Picasso rarely sold or exhibited his cut papers (or papiers découpés) during his lifetime, he signed, dated and archived them just as he did all his works. They were simply part of a more private studio practice, often made for family or as models for his fabricators. The first publication to focus solely on Picasso’s cut papers, this book features many works reproduced for the first time with newly commissioned photography, alongside new scholarship on a little-known aspect of one of the 20th century’s most pivotal practices, which contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding innovation and abstraction at the roots of modern art. Also featured is a photo section that surveys Picasso’s engagement with cut paper and sculpture over the decades and documents his practice of cutting paper, both in and out of the studio.

Résumé:
In a world increasingly dominated by the digital, the critical response to digital art generally ranges from hype to counterhype. Popular writing about specific artworks seldom goes beyond promoting a given piece and explaining how it operates, while scholars and critics remain unsure about how to interpret and evaluate them. This is where Roberto Simanowski intervenes, demonstrating how such critical work can be done. Digital Art and Meaning offers close readings of varied examples from genres of digital art such as kinetic concrete poetry, computer-generated text, interactive installation, mapping art, and information sculpture. For instance, Simanowski deciphers the complex meaning of words that not only form an image on a screen but also react to the viewer’s behavior; images that are progressively destroyed by the human gaze; text machines generating nonsense sentences out of a Kafka story; and a light show above Mexico City’s historic square, created by Internet users all over the world. Simanowski combines these illuminating explanations with a theoretical discussion that employs art philosophy and history to achieve a deeper understanding of each particular example of digital art and, ultimately, of the genre as a whole.

Résumé:
In this intriguing, illustrated volume, Canadian writer and birder Gibson employs poems, folk tales, parables, legends, and extracts from the works of naturalists and others to explore humans' relationship with birds through the centuries. Some of the material— Peter Matthiessen's tribute to shorebirds, Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem about wild swans, Thomas Hardy's ode to a darkling thrush—reflect the joy many people feel on seeing or hearing a bird. But a number of the pieces, such as Robinson Jeffers's wrenching poem about a hurt hawk, Gabriel García Márquez's story involving sinister curlews and Kafka's threatening fantasy about a vulture, do not make the best bedtime reading. Numerous selections dwell on the human propensity for killing, exploitation and cruelty, as exemplified by a grisly passage describing the slaughter of a flock of terrified birds from Gibson's novel Perpetual Motion. As if to underscore his grim message, Gibson concludes his miscellany with a list of wildlife organizations to join if one is inclined to help avians in peril. The book contains more than 100 full-color images of birds depicted in bestiaries, folk art, ancient sculpture and the works of artists such as Audubon, Lansdowne and Catesby.

Résumé:
Architectones, a monumental undertaking of seven exhibitions installed across three continents over a two year period, unites Veilhan's diverse interests in modernity, its histories of technology, and its cult of genius figures. Collectively titled after Kazimir Malevich's volumetric-spatial models, the art and architectural works partake in the revolutionary idealism of a period in which it was possible to imagine transforming society from the ground up by way of a new form of building. Between 2012 and 2014, Veilhan used music, light, and sculpture to activate Richard Neutra's VDL Research House in Silver Lake, Pierre Koenig's Case Study House No. 21 in the Hollywood Hills, and buildings designed by Le Corbusier and Mies Van Der Rohe, among others. The histories and legacies of the architects themselves played a prominent role in these installations, with figural sculptures and die-cut silhouettes of the looming personalities of the architects populating his installations. Architectones: Art in the Living Environment tells both a story of present and past, archiving exhibition photography as well as anecdotal and historical documents of many of the greatest domestic and private spaces of modern architecture.

Résumé:
In 1972, Gordon Matta-Clark (1943–78) installed a dumpster on the street between 98 and 112 Greene Street in New York’s SoHo neighborhood, an architectural artwork he called 'Open House'. Matta-Clark used discarded, scavenged materials—old pieces of wood, doors—to subdivide the space inside the dumpster, creating corridors and small rooms within the container. Dancers and artists moved around the space, their pedestrian movements activating the sculpture and captured in a Super-8 film of the piece. Matta-Clark is best known for his building cuts and architectural interventions. Because of the nature of this work and its context—sited in spaces abandoned or slated for demolition—Matta-Clark’s “anarchitecture” was almost necessarily ephemeral, surviving as only documentation and sculptural sections. 'Open House' (1972) is the only still-extant architectural piece by Matta-Clark. 'Gordon Matta-Clark: Open House' is the first publication to focus on this crucial piece by the artist, using it as a way into his complex body of work. Featuring contributions from Sophie Costes, Thierry Davila and Lydia Yee, this volume takes a historical and theoretical approach to Open House and Matta-Clark’s entire oeuvre.
