Résumé:
"The ecological engineer" is a new book series that celebrates the most innovative engineers in North America and the practices and principles that they use to produce structures, systems and technologies, in a way that embraces the emerging philosophy of sustainable design. Organized into three critical sections – practice, principles and projects – the book provides a valuable resource and touchstone for engineers, architects and other building professionals who hope to embrace an ethic that is responsible to both people and the environment. "Volume one: keen engineering" focuses on the work of one of the sustainable MEP firms in North America – KEEN Engineering. As mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers who work on projects all over the continent, they have consistently been inspiring on multiple levels – as a company, as individuals and just by the sheer volume and quality of their work.

Résumé:
"Many norths: spatial practice in a polar territory" charts the unique spatial realities of Canada’s Arctic region, an immense territory populated with small, dispersed communities. The region has undergone dramatic transformations in the name of sovereignty, aboriginal affairs management, resources, and trade, among others. For most of the Arctic’s modern history, architecture, infrastructure, and settlements have been the tools of colonialism. Today, tradition and modernity are intertwined. Northerners have demonstrated remarkable adaptation and resilience as powerful climatic, social, and economic pressures collide. This unprecedented book documents—through the themes of urbanism, architecture, mobility, monitoring, and resources—the multiplicity of norths that appear and the spatial practices employed to negotiate it. Using innovative drawings, maps, timelines, as well as essays and interviews, Many Norths reveals a distinct northern vernacular.

Résumé:
In "Manufacturing Montreal" Robert Lewis provides a detailed historical geographic account of a major North American city's industrial landscape from the beginnings of industrialization to the Great Depression. Challenging the traditional view that urban expansion due to industrial decentralization is a twentieth-century phenomenon, Lewis demonstrates that the process of industrial decentralization has been ongoing since the 1850s. Lewis's overall thesis is that the economic and social imperatives underlying industrial capitalism periodically reshaped the manufacturing geography of Montreal, as it did in many other North American cities. Time and again, the move of factories to the urban fringe shaped the social geography of the city by creating working-class residential neighborhoods. A particular strength of the book is its detailed examination of the role that utilities, transportation, technological change, investment, political control of land use, and labor markets had in the manufacturing of Montreal's factory districts.
