Résumé:
Addressing the life and work of a major figure of the Modern Movement in architecture and city planning, about whom very little is known, this first full study of Werner Hegemann (1881–1936) recounts his contribution to the emerging discipline of international city planning and his influential position within the movement. The foremost scholar on Hegemann, Collins examines the theoretical and ideological basis of his belief in an urban universality to benefit humanity and discusses the criticism he encountered to present a comprehensive analysis of a leader in a field just beginning to define itself.

Résumé:
"The city assembled" continues Kostof's unique study of urban landscape and process. Moving from the historical and cultural overviews of the city in a earlier book, Kostof descends into the streets, sidewalks, squares, markets, and waterfronts of the city and presents a detailed urban anatomy. The book is organized thematically around the structural phenomena of the city-the city edge, street, public space, the marketplace, and the realities of cultural and ecomomic segregation-and explores the customs, practicalities, and biases behind the elements of the city. In every instance, Professor Kostof follows a far-ranging story up to the present to illustrate how fresh the discussion remains today. In the past, the various elements of a city evolved in response to a variety of pressures. Today, they are usually the result of planning decisions. In a final chapter, Kostof considers 'urban process' "the effect on cities of natural disasters, wars, and comprehensive redevelopment" compared with incremental growth and change. His book is thus an exercise in architectural and social history, a case study for the present, and a pointer for the future. The story is also told in over three hundred drawings, prints, paintings, and photographs that illustrate not only typical elements of a city but also specific uses of particular elements.

Résumé:
From the seventeenth century until today, the "modern" has served as a key category by which to understand an ever-changing present. Art and architecture have played a key role in this pursuit, as the means by which "the modern" was to manifest itself. The essays in this new anthology trace the modern project through its multifarious manifestation in order to understand contemporary culture in a deeper sense than discussions of "modernism" and "post modernism" usually offer. Drawing on architectural and urban history as well as philosophy and sociology, the book outlines the complex and conflicting roots of modernity by tracing its manifestations in architecture and the city.

Résumé:
Robert Venturi exploded onto the architectural scene in 1966 with a radical call to arms in "Complexity and Contradiction". Further accolades and outrage ensued in 1972 when Venturi and Denise Scott Brown (along with Steven Izenour) analyzed the Las Vegas strip as an archetype in "Learning from Las Vegas". Now, for the first time, these two observer-designer-theorists turn their iconoclastic vision onto their own remarkable partnership and the rule-breaking architecture it has informed. The views of Venturi and Scott Brown have influenced architects worldwide for nearly half a century. Pluralism and multiculturalism; symbolism and iconography; popular culture and the everyday landscape; generic building and electronic communication are among the many ideas they have championed. Here, they present both a fascinating retrospective of their life work and a definitive statement of its theoretical underpinnings. Accessible, informative, and beautifully illustrated, Architecture as Signs and Systems is a must for students of architecture and urban planning, as well as anyone intrigued by these seminal cultural figures. Venturi and Scott Brown have devoted their professional lives to broadening our view of the built world and enlarging the purview of practitioners within it. By looking backward over their own life work, they discover signs and systems that point forward, toward a humane Mannerist architecture for a complex, multicultural society.
