However, the requirements when planning stairs are high and vary enormously depending on the multitude of building tasks and materials. ''Stairs: Detail Practice'' orders all stair types by design and construction typologies. In addition, a planning guide explains the various stair parts, building elements, construction types as well as materials. Finally, an example part with realised projects invites you to draw inspiration for your own practice.

What changes in teaching and practice, if any, are created by the increasing number of women entering the profession? Do the similar numbers of men and women students attending architectural schools in the west signal a gender-specific architecture? Well-known women architects from Europe and the USA discuss these matters and report their academic and professional experiences, how they see the way ahead and argue - from individual points of view - for a debate on educational structures and how the practice of architecture is composed.

Résumé:
This book explores ‘spatial practices’, a loose and expandable set of approaches that embrace the political and the activist, the performative and the curatorial, the architectural and the urban. Acting upon and engaging with the public realm, the field of spatial practices allows people to reconnect with their own sense of agency through engagement in space and place, exploring and prototyping alternative futures in the here and now. The 24 chapters contain essays, visual essays and interviews, featuring contributions from an international set of experimental practitioners including Jeanne van Heeswijk (Netherlands), Teddy Cruz (Estudio Teddy Cruz + Fonna Forman, San Diego), Hector (USA), The Decorators (London) and OOZE (Netherlands). Beautifully designed with full colour illustrations, Spatial Practices advances dialogue and collaboration between academics and practitioners and is essential reading for students, researchers and professionals in architecture, urban planning and urban policy.

Résumé:
For some time, artists and intellectuals struggled for the sovereign right to present themselves to society in their own way – to become self-created works of art. Today everybody has not only a right but also an obligation to practice self-design. We are responsible for the way we present ourselves to others – and we cannot get rid of this aesthetic responsibility. However, we are not able to produce our own bodies. Before we begin to practice self-design, we find ourselves already designed by the gaze of others. That is why the practice of self-design mostly takes a critical and confrontational turn. We want to bring others to see us in the way we want to be seen – not only during our earthly life but also after our death. This is a complicated struggle, and the aim of this book is to describe and analyze it.

Résumé:
"Out of the ordinary" is a detailed account of current work by Pollard Thomas Edwards architects (PTEa), accompanied by an overview of the career of this prominent practice. Innovators in both design and business strategies, PTEa have been pioneers of urban property development since they were established in the 1970s, and their radical methodologies continue to influence contemporary architecture, even as they continue to evolve. PTEa's innovations have now become absorbed into standard urban design practice; this book shows how they continue to build upon their own radical approach in their most recent projects, including the development at City Road Basin, which houses their own offices among new mixed-use buildings and public gardens. PTEa's work, in its emphasis upon context and the accommodation of the new within the old, is doubly 'out of the ordinary'; by emerging from and working within 'ordinary', existing structures, they are a truly extraordinary practice.
