'More would be unnecessary, less impossible', is designer Bruno Ninaber van Eyben's principle. His work, for which he was the first to receive the Kho Liang Ie Award in 1979, is characterized by silent dialogues between form, function, technology and material. From a minimalist position Ninaber van Eyben searches for pragmatic solutions to make functional objects, always keeping in touch with the end product's poetic quality. Among other classics he gave the wristwatch (1973), the neck watch (1976) and the TL lamp (1977) to the world. His watches are still commercially successful. In 1980 Ninaber designed the Dutch coin series with the portrait of H.M. Queen Beatrix and eighteen years later his design won the competition for the Dutch side of the Euro coin. His products grace museum collections in the Netherlands and also abroad, notably at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Together with Wolfram Peters and Peter Krouwel he founded the industrial design studio n|p|k in 1985. He was its co-director for twelve years. In 1997 he started a new office, Bruno Ninaber van Eyben design & production. It develops high-quality and sometimes more personal products independently and for a limited number of customers, such as the Prime Minister's national gift, the chairperson's gavel for Parliament and the new chain of office for the mayor of Papendrecht, a small town near Rotterdam. "With compliments" is not a traditional monograph. It is mainly a story in images, showing Ninaber's products and sources of inspiration. Short, strong statements underline the images and provide them with a context.

The post-war years placed enormous demands on housing and school construction. In his Maxéville factory Prouvé developed pre-fabricated housing, facade panelling, light filtering and other systems on a large scale. He was inspired by the works of the automobile and aeronautics industry, developing new applications for aluminium, which he presented in the 1954 Aluminium Centenary Pavilion. Moreover, Prouvé's furnitures of this period have become valuable collectors' items, some of which are now being reissued under licence.

How exactly do small towns become suburbs? How do country roads turn into commercial strips? And what can planners do to prevent these changes in the future? Using the state of Vermont as the rural ideal, the authors compare contemporary vs. traditional development to demonstrate how today's primary way of developing land - suburban sprawl - is forever changing the look of rural American. Using a host of aerial photographs - many altered through computer simulation to illustrate how landscapes are transformed over time - "Above and beyond" argues for a return to traditional development patterns that produce more compact cities and towns. Highlighting widespread trends in contemporary land development - from fragmentation (our tendency to spread out) to separation (our tendencey to allocate separate areas of town for living, working, shopping and playing) - the authors offer case examples of coummunities that have succeeded in curbing those trends. They show how these communities have invigorated their town centers; lured home buyers back to town; integrated working, shopping and recreation areas; nurtured a sense of identity and community; rewritten land-use regulations to allow for more compact developing; and overcome the "cars rule" mentality of suburban development.
