Lorsque le diocèse de Paris le rachète en 2001, c'est un colossal chantier de restauration qui est lancé, mené par l'architecte Jean-Michel Wilmotte. Inauguré en 2008, en présence du pape qui y prononce une série de discours sur les rapports de la foi et de la culture contemporaine, Paris redécouvre alors ce grandiose témoignage de l'architecture gothique, mais aussi d'une université médiévale.
