Résumé:
On the outside surveys 8vo’s work from 1984–2001, including Octavo, the international journal of typography and its influence in the emergent typographically-led design movement in the UK and internationally during the late 1980s and through the 1990s. The emphasis is on process : trying to reveal how 8vo’s design got made rather than simply showing finished jobs. A number of hand-made and computer generated stage by stage mock-ups are featured. Written and designed by Mark Holt and Hamish Muir, two of the founding principals of 8vo, the story’s told it how it was—the everyday struggles of working with clients, typesetters, printers, and later on computers. Like many of their contemporaries, 8vo were working during a period of considerable change within the design industry — the book places 8vo’s work within the context of this revolution; from paste-up to desktop.

It's everywhere, including the moon (on the commemorative plaque left by Apollo 11 astronauts), Nike sneakers, the artworks of Barbara Kruger, Ed Ruscha, and Jenny Holzer, 2001: A Space Odyssey credits, Domino's Pizza boxes, Absolut Vodka bottles, and Red Bull cans. Futura and its typographic offspring have been the face of presidential campaigns from Richard Nixon to Hillary Clinton. Indeed, Futura is one of the most used fonts in the world today the typeface of modern design more so even than Helvetica. This fascinating book explores the cultural history and uses of a face that's so common you might not notice, until you start looking, and then you can't escape it. Douglas Thomas traces Futura from its Bauhaus-inspired origin in Paul Renner's 1924 design, to its current role as the go-to choice for corporate work, logos, motion pictures, and advertisements.

Résumé:
his book is about a country that was once called Yugoslavia and was ruled by Josip Broz Tito. From the 1950's onwards, Tito spent his summers at Brijuni, a small archipelago along the west coast of the Istrian region of Croatia. This former summer residence embodies the beginning and the end of the Yugoslavian dream, in which Tito firmly believed. His private dwellings, which are still kept in order on a daily basis, are strictly forbidden to the public. Between 2001 and 2017, Dutch photographer Friso Keuris pictured the personnel and the interior of the Tribunal. In 2016, he was free to photograph the idyllic, utopian world of Brijuni. This book also shows images of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The UN court dealt with the war crimes committed during the civil war from 1991 to 2000.

Opened to the public in 2009, the Acropolis museum is the work of Bernard Tschumi, who won a design competition in 2001 with an entry that outlined, the architect said, a "simple and precise museum with the mathematical and conceptual clarity of ancient Greece." Located in Athens' historic area of Makryianni, the museum stands less than 1,000 feet southeast of the Parthenon, at the entrance of a network of pedestrian walkways that provide access to the Acropolis. Professor Dimitrios Pandermalis, President of the Organization for the Construction of the New Acropolis Museum, has hailed the design for its "simple, clear, and beautiful solution that is in accord with the beauty and classical simplicity of the Museum's unique exhibits"; Pandermalis contributes the preface to this volume, one in Poligrafa's new series of monographs on new museum architecture.

Résumé:
When it opened in 1962, the TWA Flight Center at New York’s JFK airport was a sensation. Created by Eero Saarinen with a distinctly birdlike design, it was instantly seen as a striking emblem of the romance of air travel. More than half a century later, it remains a beloved icon of modern architecture. Designing TWA is the first book to tell the whole story of Saarinen’s building, from its early planning through its closing in 2001 after the takeover of TWA by American Airlines. Documenting the terminal’s commission, planning, building, and use, architect Kornel Ringli reveals the constant tension between the operational needs of the airline and Saarinen’s visionary imaginings—revealing the TWA building as an incredible architectural achievement that nonetheless failed to meet the day-to-day demands of the business it housed. Résumé:
"Temporary discomfort" documents Davos, Genoa, New York and Evian/Geneva in a transitory state of emergency lock-down during the global economic summits (2001–2003). It combines different photographical genres: landscape photography, photojournalism and police photography, though here with the camera lens turned back at the security forces. But instead of street fighting and handshakes, Jules Spinatsch shows winter nights in Davos, complete with floodlighted barbedwire labyrinths. He shows Genova, a fortress empty as the Mediterranean noonday sky. We see freight containers, symbols for world trade, that are used as barricades against its foes. He invites us to scrutinize the streets in New York at night: road blocks, tents, and mobile transmission units: that seem surreally empty. He photographs the sleepy waking of the security guards. Spinatsch examines the waiting for the big event that appears as meticulously planned, down to the last detail.
