Résumé:
This publication offers a view of Steven Holl's spectacular buildings, with a particular eye to their sculptural expressiveness, the materials used, compositional elements, and the way light is handled. Essays by Dietmar Steiner (director of the Architekturzentrum in Vienna), Yehuda Safran (professor at Columbia University, New York) and Wolf Prix (architect, Vienna) shed light on the process of moving from idea to phenomenon, from the first sketch - in this case from Steven Holl's water-colour drawings - to construction.

Résumé:
"Hors-Sol" is a record of poster interventions by artists in public spaces in Switzerland from 1961 to the present day. The poster is usually a medium for commercial messages, but here it is used to convey new meanings, some of which are more firmly anchored in the context of art, others explicitly aimed at advertising. These unusual intrusions are disturbing and cause people to reflect on the conditions in which art and PR function, the use and effect of the mass media, the occupation of public spaces, and personal roles in different contexts. In historical comparison, they function as a mirror of the time and reveal a great deal about changing social conditions. The poster campaigns that took place in the 1960s and 1980s seemed to be impressively explosive and alarmingly direct, whereas today's artistic forays into the poster as a medium are evidence that PR aesthetics and the art world are coming into line, both formally and rhetorically.

Résumé:
‘The Gothic Revival’, writes Michael Lewis, ‘is more than a fashion craze for pointed arches and pinnacles. During its years of greatest influence, it subjected every aspect of art, belief, society, and labour to intense intellectual scrutiny, using the Middle Ages as a platform from which to judge the modern world.’ It is the unique merit of "The Gothic Revival" that it gives as much attention to the ideas that gave Gothic architecture its emotional and intellectual power as it does to its great monuments. The eighteenth century admired the Gothic for its sense of decay and melancholy; the nineteenth century first cherished its religious piety, then its superb engineering. In the course of the Revival the Gothic was attached to social movements of every sort – from political liberalism to patriotic nationalism to labour reform. Like Marxism, which also drew lessons from medieval society, the Gothic Revival seemed to offer a comprehensive response to the dislocations and traumas of the Industrial Revolution. By the early twentieth century, the Gothic Revival had outlived its ideals. In recent years, however, the climate of opinion has changed, and we are ready to understand, appreciate and learn from it.

Résumé:
Colours, textures, forms and shapes are the basis of this sourcebook that reveals the elements common to all design and teaches us how to see afresh. Beautiful and instructive, it surveys our whole environment, natural and manmade, and shows how it can be defined in terms of basic elements which take us to the heart of the creative process. All are represented with telling juxtapositions in a wide range of materials and techniques – the bark of a plane tree in Paris; a detail of a cotton towel in Japan; sunset in the Egyptian desert; a tiled floor in Bangkok; a cart wheel in Antwerp.

Résumé:
Americans still build millions of dream houses in neighborhoods that sustain Victorian stereotypes of the home as "woman's place" and the city as "man's world." Urban historian and architect Dolores Hayden tallies the personal and social costs of an American "architecture of gender" for the two-earner family, the single-parent family, and single people. Many societies have struggled with the architectural and urban consequences of women's paid employment: Hayden traces three models of home in historical perspective — the haven strategy in the United States, the industrial strategy in the former USSR, and the neighborhood strategy in European social democracies — to document alternative ways to reconstruct neighborhoods. Updated and still relevant today as the New Urbanist architects have taken up Hayden's critique of suburban space, this award-winning book is essential reading for architects, planners, public officials, and activists interested in women's social and economic equality.
