Résumé:
Featured in the 2018 film "The gardener," Les Quatre Vents in Charlevoix County, Quebec, has been acclaimed as the most aesthetically satisfying and horticulturally exciting landscape experience in North America. This twenty-acre garden seamlessly combines traditional and novel elements into a splendid composition, adorned with unexpected touches and perfectly compatible with its natural surroundings. "The greater perfection," first published in 2001, illustrates the delights, diversions, and surprises that await the garden’s visitors. Francis H. Cabot’s account of the challenges he faced in developing Les Quatre Vents reveals the fascinating process behind the creation of a world-class garden that has become a mecca for horticultural enthusiasts around the globe. Winner of the 2003 Annual Literature Award of the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries and featuring stunning full-color images by five leading garden photographers, "The greater perfection" is one of the most beautiful books on gardens to appear in years. This new printing includes a foreword by Marianne Cabot Welch, Cabot’s daughter, that further contextualizes the gardens and explores how a place rooted in the past can confront the future.

Since the late 1980s, Catherine Opie's interest in the motif of the visual road trip has resulted in photographic series that simultaneously document and question personal and collective identities that characterize America. For the past two winters, as the Walker's 2001 Visual Arts artist-in-residence, she has focused on two specific architectural elements in and around the Twin Cities: ice-fishing houses and skyways. Opie's American cities series explores the historical specificity of architectures that are often taken for granted. Her take on the Twin Cities' vernacular landscape has resulted in 26 panoramic black-and-white images of skyways as well as 14 large-format color images of ice-fishing houses. As a photographic project, Catherine Opie: "Skyways & icehouses" provides a meditative portrait of this particular locale. This catalogue, accompanying the exhibition features selected submissions by Minnesota residents who have had particular experiences with and in these local icons. Their short essays animate Opie's empty landscapes with personal anecdotes, memories, poems, and stories. With an introduction by curator Douglas Fogle

Résumé:
Kawada’s The Map / Chizu is the most famous and sought after book in the history of Japanese photography. Designed with the noted graphic designer Kohei Sugiura, Chizu has seen numerous editions since its original publication in August 1965. In November 2001, New York Public Library acquired the rarest version of the book, Kikuji Kawada’s unique, handmade maquette. The maquette presents a notably different physicality than that of the published edition—many of the pictures are the same but with variant croppings, tonalities, orientations, and a markedly dissimilar configuration with a pair of jacketed volumes—each nearly twice as large in format as the published version—separated by a black-and-white divider. With its pages made of thin, silvery darkroom prints, folded in half and pasted back-to-back, there are no folios to unfurl, only a progression of intense, full-bleed images. This version is a facsimile of the two-volume maquette, and includes an accompanying bilingual booklet featuring new scholarship by Joshua Chuang and Miyuki Hinton, together with an extended interview with the artist.

Résumé:
In the middle of the salt-frosted Afghan desert, in a village so remote that Google can’t find it, a woman squats on top of a loom, making flowers bloom in the thousand threads she knots by hand. Here, where heroin is cheaper than rice, every day is a fast day. B-52s pass overhead—a sign of America’s omnipotence or its vulnerability, the villagers are unsure. They know, though, that the earth is flat—like a carpet. Anna Badkhen first traveled to this country in 2001, as a war correspondent. She has returned many times since, drawn by a land that geography has made a perpetual battleground, and by a people who sustain an exquisite tradition there. Through the four seasons in which a new carpet is woven by the women and children of Oqa, she immortalizes their way of life much as the carpet does—from the petal half-finished where a hungry infant needs care to the interruptions when the women trade sex jokes or go fill in for wedding musicians scared away by the Taliban.

Résumé:
This volume is a collection of essays by thirty contributors, all internationally recognized performers of Xenakis' music. Many of these artists have worked closely with Xenakis and several works are discussed by their dedicatees. These testimonies prove, through real life experience and performance, the feasibility of realizing his very difficult writing, not only attested to by those close to the composer during his lifetime, but also by the younger generation that continues to be drawn to it. Each essay gives a new perspective: on what the composer was really looking for, on tricks of the trade for negotiating treacherously technical prowess, or on the attainment of an enhanced sense of self through the performance of this music. Following an extensive preface by Kanach, who collaborated closely with Xenakis from the late 1970s until his death in 2001, the book is divided into chapters organized by family of instruments. Every instrument of the orchestra is discussed by its practitioner; issues unique to the voice, as well as ensemble and orchestral works are explored, and two contributions concern the performance of Xenakis pioneering electronic works.

Résumé:
The influential Presence Project brought together an international group of collaborators in 2001 to investigate how technology can be used to increase the presence of older people in their local communities. This became a groundbreaking project for practice-based design research, exploring approaches and methods that have resonated since. The design team rejected a problem-solving approach, focusing instead on creating new and unusual situations for communication and insight. They introduced cutting-edge methods and developed challenging designs that they tested in the communities themselves. This book documents the Presence Project's development of key concepts in contemporary technology design, including cultural probes, design workbooks, and speculative design. Original Presence Project participants may have been surprised that the methods they invented became standard practice; the theme of the project was to break out of conventional approaches and try something radically new. With a new preface by Bill Gaver and an introduction by Phoebe Sengers, this reissue of The Presence Project gives readers a glimpse into the thinking behind this influential project and ideas about how to bring it to bear on today's design problems.
