Résumé:
New York’s water system is staggering – it provides 1.3 billion gallons of water a day to over 9 million people from 200 square miles of watershed. Its aqueducts, reservoirs, tunnels, gatehouses, and tanks have been continually under construction since the 1830s, and its current – and largest – tunnel project will not be completed until 2020.
But more significantly, New York’s water system is also sublime – from its acres of bucolic land to its glimmering steel mechanizations, "Waterworks" captures the beauty and mystery of the system that is so essential to so many. Photographer Stanley Greenberg began photographing these spectacular sites in 1992 after years of petitioning the authorities to gain access to them. Since then he has traveled to places as varied as dams in remote regions of upstate New York and tunnels 800 feet below the streets of Brooklyn. He finished his shooting in the spring of 2001, just before the events of 9/11 closed most of these sites to all access. In "Waterworks", Greenberg reveals the now hidden liquid city in stunning duotones. An introduction by Matthew Gandy covers the history, technology, and culture of the system.

Résumé:
The events that took place on September 11, 2001, in New York City are the background for a series of essays exploring the response of different cities at different times to natural or man-made disaster. How have cities coped with cataclysmic change in the urban fabric both physically and psychologically? How have they memorialized what they have lost, and how have they imagined their future? What have been the effects, in both the short and long term, of these efforts to rebuild the city? From the devastating earthquake that shook Lisbon in 1755 to the Great Chicago fire in 1871; from the bombing of Hiroshima to the destruction of Rotterdam and Plymouth during the second World War; from the cities and towns ravaged by the Bosnian War to the symbolism of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem - this book offers varying perspectives on how cities have responded to catastrophic disasters. Following these case studies is a history of destruction and rebuilding in Manhattan, and a reflection on the role of cities in sustaining democratic culture concludes the book. Contributors to this volume include leading urban theorists, architectural historians, cultural critics, architects, and a film-maker.

Résumé:
The Jewish Museum in Berlin tells the story of German-Jewish history from the fourth century to the present. It consists of two buildings: the first, a former courthouse, was built in the eighteenth century, and the second, a massive extension that opened to the public in 2001, was designed by the world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind (born 1946). Libeskind's building is comprised of a zinc façade and a set of three underground allegorical roads. The first leads to the main stairs, and by implication to the continuation of Berlin's history in the Museum; the second leads outdoors into the E.T.A. Hoffmann Garden, representing the exile and emigration of the Jews from Germany; and the third road leads to a dead end, representing “the Holocaust void.” This road cuts through the ensemble as a whole, and evokes, in the architect's words, “that which can never be exhibited when it comes to Jewish Berlin history: humanity reduced to ashes.” For Libeskind, a Polish Jew raised not far from Berlin who lost many relatives in the Holocaust, this extraordinary building was an intensely personal undertaking with numerous responsibilities. This volume details this most freighted and complex of buildings.
