Résumé:
How do we design our cities when our most intimate experiences are incessantly tracked and our feelings become the base of new modes of production that prioritize the immaterial over the material? Since the 2008 financial crisis, lists of well-being indicators, happiness indexes, and quality-of-life rankings have become viral. Concurrently, the emotional data presented in these surveys- including perceptions on questions such as loneliness, friendship and intimate fears- feed an expanding political agenda of happiness and a new form of market whose most decisive asset is "affect." 'Our Happy Life' investigates the architectural implications of this trend by dissecting and questioning the political, economic, and emotional conditions that generate space today. Organized as a visual narrative with critical readings by Will Davies, Daniel Fujiwara, Simon Fujiwara, Ingo Niermann, Deane Simpson, and Mirko Zardini, this book reveals architecture, city, and landscape as contested surfaces, caught between the intagible guidelines of happiness indexes, the new marketplace of emotions, and the relentless ideology of positivity.

Résumé:
Pierre-Jean Giloux seeks to create a language using sound and image that combines elements of pop culture and mass media with more 'intellectual' cultures which refer to the visual arts and architecture. This first monograph by the artist accompanies a series of videos inspired by the Metabolists, a utopist architecture movement which emerged in Japan in the late 1950s. It follows the films’ production as he explores the connections between four cities (Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto) to create urban portraits combining digital with filmed or photographed images of social and urban reality. The book includes texts by Pierre Musso, Élie During, and Vincent Romagny.

Résumé:
From their Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize-winning design for the University of Piura educational facilities to their design for the Place of Remembrance in Lima, Barclay & Crousse's work binds together the most current advances in technology with designs that center on the quality of life of its dwellers. Their works show how design specific to the conditions of developing countries can inform and be vital to global architectural conversation. Founded in Paris by Sandra Barclay and Jean Pierre Crousse in 1994, the firm relocated to Lima, Peru, in 2006, pursuing their projects in Europe through Atelier Nord-Sud. This book presents 12 buildings illustrated through sketches, plans and over 120 photographs by Chilean photographer Cristóbal Palma. The volume is a work unto itself that demonstrates the architects' mastery of space.

Résumé:
The theme of the first Rotterdam International Architecture Biennial was mobility--as it relates to the city and the landscape, and the design culture that comes with it. Held between May and July 2003, the biennial brought together numerous universities, architects, urbanists, spatial planners and designers to swap experiences and discuss new strategies for giving shape to (car) mobility. This unique book shows the results of this international research in its various forms: statistics, photography, text, visual collage and design proposals. These together give a tangible and insightful look at the mobile cultures found in a wide range of cities and countries, from Mexico City, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, to Djakarta, Budapest, the Ruhr Valley, Beirut, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Peking and Holland. The aim of the publication is twofold. On the one hand, to understand infrastructures and motorway culture by studying their different cultural and geographical contexts. On the other, to draw up an agenda for the future, one that establishes the role to be played by various design disciplines. This research and publication endeavor is the fruit of a collaboration between the universities of Wuppertal, Aachen, Berlin, California, Monterrey (Mexico), Tokyo, Hong Kong, Peking, Beirut, Budapest, Bandung and Delft.

Résumé:
From December 9, 2023 to April 21, 2024, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presents an exhibition created by the Indian architecture studio, Studio Mumbai, directed by Bijoy Jain. Inspired by the rhythm of breathing, this exhibition offers a space for reverie and contemplation in dialogue with Jean Nouvel’s building. Born in 1965 in Mumbai, Bijoy Jain created Studio Mumbai in 2005. Exploring the links between art, architecture and materials, this human-scale organization is composed of craftsmen and architects who design and build each project themselves, using local resources. Bijoy Jain / Studio Mumbai participated in many exhibitions around the world, including the Venice (2010, 2016) and Chicago (2017) architecture biennals. For the Fondation Cartier, Bijoy Jain unites man and nature, light and shadow, bamboo, brick and stone to form a meditative landscape taking us into the heart of creation. Sculptures, objects and furniture interact with artworks by Chinese painter Hu Liu and Turkish ceramist Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye, invited by the architect, revealing a shared sensibility and ethos between these artists. The catalog published in conjunction with the exhibition invites readers to discover Bijoy Jain’s aesthetics and philosophy. Conceived as a work-in-progress of the exhibition, this book focuses on the artist’s drawings, photographs of his studio and works in the making.

Résumé:
Until now, the book market has primarily dealt with the popular topic of living by the sea with publications that illustrate the location’s aesthetic appeal. This book goes further to focus on the design, constructional, and technical possibilities that permit one to react to the special conditions of locations by the sea. In an introductory section, the author sets forth the principal aspects that fundamentally affect architectural design for this construction task: the geography and geology of the site, climatic conditions, and durability of materials, but also such aesthetic factors as light, landscape, and position, all of which play a special role in approaches to living by the sea. In keeping with this, the following project section, with twenty-five international examples, is organized according to the type of relationship the houses have with the sea: right by the sea, above the sea, or in the sea. The volume uses texts, detailed project information, drawings, and striking photographs to present exemplary design approaches taken by contemporary architects, including Tadao Ando, David Chipperfield, and Steven Holl. Christine Desmoulins is a journalist and architecture critic. She regulary publishes articles in noted architecture journals, including d'Architectures, Construction Moderne, and Abitare, and is the author of numerous books on architecture.
