Résumé:
The lived experience of cities has long been defined by motion. As urban dwellers travel to work, home, and play they carve random or predictable pathways across neighbourhoods and districts. This book investigates the urban capacity for movement, the city as a space of circulation, by taking into account not only the physical displacement of people but the circulation of cultures, things, and ideas. A series of case studies examine a range of topics, including neighbourhood gentrification, subway busking, yard sales, electronic waste, and language, refining the touchstone principle of circulation for the study of urban culture, both materially and theoretically. Contributors employ a variety of disciplinary approaches to create a richly varied picture of the multiple trajectories and effects of movement in the city.

Résumé:
There has been a Dutch policy on the compact city for almost a quarter of a century now. It has been driven by the four major cities in Randstad Holland which, following the economic crises of the 1970s and the policy of clustered dispersal, found themselves confronted with a massive decrease in middle and higher income groups. At the same time there were new insights into the importance of strong cities in the emerging global network economy. This collection of writings takes stock of the situation and traces a number of contour lines that suggest ways a compact city policy can be meaningful and effective in today’s setting.

The growing urbanization of the planet, visible in the fact that by the middle of this century some 70% percent of the population will live in cities, situates the urban question as a key issue for global sustainability. Many of the causes generating the huge environmental crises, climate change for instance, have their rationale in the metabolic inefficiency of our cities. Greater metabolic efficiency contributes to the energy rationalization of urban system and also contributes to greater urban competitiveness. Urban metabolic analysis demonstrates efficiency that small and medium-sized cities can have in the new neo-tertiary context, and could be used as a test to previously evaluate the functional and ecological consequences of future urban transformations.
