Résumé:
Whether exploring the potential of a new technology, redefining a typology, or engaging a community on the other side of the globe, the lines of inquiry beginning at the GSD consistently indicate relevance to larger social, cultural, and spatial questions. To understand the scope of this potential impact, the work was framed with one simple question: “What can design do?”. We have identified five actions that describe the ability of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Planning and Design at the GSD to reach beyond their immediate contexts and out into the world: Instigate Evolution, Describe Identity, Construct Equality, Negotiate Growth, Imagine New Futures. The range and definition of these actions is tested through the work of a representative collection of studios, lectures, seminars, symposia, colloquia, thesis projects, and student research. The core studios are presented here in sequence.

Based on nominations worldwide, The International Highrise Award is bestowed every two years jointly on the developer and planner of a completed building. Finalists are chosen by an esteemed jury of architects, engineers and property specialists who judge on the basis of a building's special aesthetics, pioneering design, sustainability, cost efficiency, integration into its urban context and use of innovative technology. Presented by Deutsches Architekturmuseum and DekaBank Deutsche Girozentrale, the prestigious award consists of a monetary prize of 50,000 Euro and is accompanied by a certificate and a sculpture by renowned German artist Thomas Demand. This book presents the 27 nominated projects encompassing a range of uses in cities throughout the world: Bangkok, Barcelona, Brisbane, Cádiz, Chicago, Doha, Dubai, Frankfurt am Main, Hong Kong, London, Luxembourg City, Munich, New York, Osaka, Paris, Philadelphia, Rotterdam, Seoul, Shanghai, Tokyo and Winnipeg.

Résumé:
This issue of the Cornell Journal of Architecture is about the now, the new, and the next in architecture, while simultaneously acknowledging that every possible future is intrinsically linked to the existent, to the present and its attendant past. At the heart of issue 8: RE is the understanding that the creative act itself is reiterative; that in rethinking, recombining, reshuffling, recycling, and reimagining aspects of the world around us, we produce work that both belongs to the current moment and establishes new future trajectories. The texts reflect the interconnected strands of technology, history, theory, and intuition that necessarily reinforce each other in architectural education and practice today: issues of reuse and recycling; of feedback loops and regression; of dialogue, criticism, and correspondence; and of the role that changing technologies have in restructuring the way we think, see, and remember.

Résumé:
Until recently, thanks to the unforgiving geometric rigors of modernism, biomorphism in design and architecture was seen a purely decorative feature - as in Art Nouveau, for example. This publication turns this idea on its head, offering a glimpse into the future of architectural design, in which the veins of leaves, formations of foam, Celtic knotwork and even hair braiding can be transformed into viable structures through the wonders of digital design technology. For the architect and researcher Lars Spuybroek, such natural, ornamental and folkloristic pattern could entirely replace standardized geometric design to determine the structural basis and aesthetic character of tomorrow's buildings. Here, Spuybroek presents both a theoretical framework and an inspiring taxonomy of patterns and structures, followed by more than 100 illustrated designs for skyscrapers and façades based on organizational principles ranging from rose windows to knitting patterns.

Résumé:
Lifelike invites a close examination of art since the late 1960s based on commonplace objects and situations that are startlingly realistic, often playful and sometimes surreal--works that investigate the quieter side of the quotidian. While artists such as Vija Celmins, Rudolf Stingel and Paul Sietsema employ illusionistic painting and drawing, others’ use of materials is surprising--Thomas Demand’s video of what appears to be a rainstorm is made from animated candy wrappers; Susan Collis’ sculpture of construction debris is fashioned from exotic hardwoods, mother of pearl and silver. What binds these artists together is their rejection of the easy route technology might offer in favor of labor-intensive fabrication. Featuring painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, video and installations by more than 40 artists, this publication is the first publication to address the recent history of artists using these strategies across media.

Résumé:
Completed in 2008, the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California, is one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings of recent times. Its design, by Craig W. Hartman of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), combines the early Christian symbol of the fish with an innovative structure made of glass, wood and concrete. A glazed, bivalve exterior envelops the building, while a layer of fritted glass diffuses light and heat. Inside, the vaulted wooden ceiling soars 130 feet upwards, where an oculus opens out to the sky. The unique Omega window behind the altar was created with the help of new technology developed specifically for the cathedral: an image of the Romanesque relief of Christ from the tympanum of Chartres Cathedral was digitized and rendered as laser-perforated holes in an aluminum panel, creating a 60-foot pixilated image.
