Résumé:
SO–IL is an architecture firm born in New York in 2008. Diverse in origin, their team of collaborators speaks a dozen languages and is informed by global narratives and perspectives. Both locally-rooted and nationless, they explore how the creation of environments and objects inspires lasting positive intellectual and societal engagement. Amant is an arts campus spread across three blocks in rapidly changing, industrial North Brooklyn. This cultural incubator functions both privately, and publicly, with artist studios, galleries, offices, storage, and a cafe. Rather than an inward-looking space isolated from its urban context, the collection of distributed volumes weaves itself into the fabric of the city. The mini-campus is a part of, benefits from, and contributes to the local community. Pockets of outdoor spaces, multiple entries, and openings cohabit the ground with other members of the neighbourhood.

Résumé:
"A variability quantifier" is an artwork intended to function as an operational weather station. Located on Fogo Island to the north of Newfoundland, it gathers local weather data and is a place for education, reflection, and discussion. A year after the installation of the work Liam Gillick returned to Fogo to make a documentary film about his work. This resulted in two separate films that make use of the same footage. In "Variability quantified" we hear Nobel Prize winning climatologist Syukuro Manabe explaining the science of global heating and his pioneering work modeling earth’s climate in the 1960s. In "Quantified variability" the artist dramatically altered the natural colors in the footage and set it to a layered soundtrack of automated industrial production. This book is a record of the two films alongside a discussion with art historian Tom McDonough.

Résumé:
A phenomenology of the mall: If the mall makes us feel bad, why do we keep going back? In a world poisoned by capitalism, is shopping what makes life worth living? Kate Black grew up in West Edmonton Mall – a mall on steroids, notorious for its indoor waterpark, deadly roller coaster, and controversial dolphin shows. But everyone has a favourite mall, or a mall that is their own personal memory palace. It's a place people love to hate and hate to love – a site of pleasure and pain, of death and violence, of (sub)urban legend. Blending a history of shopping with a story of coming of age in North America's largest and strangest mall, "Big mall" investigates how these structures have become the ultimate symbol of late-capitalist dread – and, surprisingly, a subversive site of hope.

Résumé:
"Lost Dog" opens with a cat inquisitively turning towards us - a character inviting us to a vast land. And we can indeed speak of character, so much does "Lost Dog" resemble a fable. Throughout the pages, Bates is the solitary traveler on an odyssey, coming across with elusive figures, crossing depopulated places that, always, retain the mysterious traces of a past presence - wreckage landed on the branches of a dead tree, details of a forgotten domestic life, blood stains on immaculate snow... And sometimes, among the crystal-clear images, a tenderness emerges here and there, rays of warmth found in a woman's gaze or in a benevolent flame. Through valleys and mountains, Ian Bates offers with "Lost Dog" a portrait of a mysterious American North West, whose strangeness and magnificent solitude he captures like no other.

Résumé:
The Distant Early Warning Line, also known as the DEW Line, was a system of radar stations in the northern Arctic region of Canada, with additional stations along the north coast and Aleutian Islands of Alaska and the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland. It intended to detect incoming bombers of the Soviet Union during the Cold War and provide early warning of any sea and land invasion. Today, the Arctic is seen as a place primed for data storage and vaults––doomsday structures with a utilitarian vernacular of architecture, protecting the "knowledge" of places further south rather than recognizing the local presence and expertise of place and Indigenous lifeways and Indigenous science. This book looks at the role of artists as early warning systems and explores the ways we connect and disconnect place and people through technology and the ideas of boundaries.

Résumé:
A lexicon of selected architectural terms, supplemented by examples drawn from the author’s memories, this compendious compendium offers new and exciting ways to engage with architecture, enriching the reader’s experience of the built environment. Entries include traditional and modern architectural terminology, rendered with an intriguing, rhythmic play of alliteration and a display of philological origins, often enriched with sub-entries of first-person narratives, based on an auto-ethnographic practice with a post-secular framework. While organized in a standard alphabetical order, the contents reflect the author’s life experience, his early years in Mexico, his travels and sojourns in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and Australia, and his life in Canada as an academic teaching the history of Western architectural theory and philosophy: a life with its inherent limitations and subjectivities, yielding definitions that are both particular and universal.

Résumé:
The new building for Bayer’s company headquarters is innovative and transparent, functional yet sophisticated, embodying the ethos of this global concern. Indeed these were the factors which led Bayer to chose Helmut Jahn’s project in 1998. Comprising four storeys, the structure is semi-elliptical in shape. To the south it blends harmoniously with the Carl-Duisburg Park while to the north, a long garden pergola provides the link to the entry hall. In order to make maximum use of natural resources and minimize technical equipment the concrete structure has a twin shell facade, facilitating natural ventilation and optimizing daylight. This building skin regulates interior and exterior conditions and the integral heating and cooling system takes advantage of the low energy characteristics of water and the thermal storage capacity of concrete. This book portrays this structure in stunning duotone photographs, short texts and plans.

Résumé:
'Rzlbd HopScotch', the first monograph on rzlbd’s work, focuses on its built projects over the last five years, while including a selection of past works and polemical writings that set the foundation for the practice. With a particular interest in the house as an archetypal model of the world, whilst implementing the guiding idea that design belongs to everyone and that “modern has to be affordable”, the work of rzlbd occupies a unique position in its exploration of new ideas for contemporary infill dwellings. Along with architectural projects and writings, the book is also a record of Aliabadi’s search for a design language and his unique perspective coming out of his three major solo expeditions?to the North Pole, round the world in 49 days and the ‘Trans-Canada’, across the country from Atlantic to Pacific.

Résumé:
Published to coincide with an exhibition at Chicago’s Newberry Library, Mapping Manifest Destiny: Chicago and the American West charts the historic role maps have played in imagining, understanding, promoting, and exploiting the Western frontier of North America. Featuring more than sixty full-color maps and views from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries, this fascinating book documents how maps encouraged Euro-Americans to see the West as a land of promise. Maps helped visualize a nation destined to expand across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. Curators Michael P. Conzen and Diane Dillon present an interpretively rich, carefully researched selection of items drawing on the Newberry’s superb collections of historic maps and Western Americana. They have organized the book into four sections: maps for empire, maps for building a new nation, maps for enlightenment, and maps for business.
