Résumé:
The Modernist house was a test of modern architects’ ability to meet human needs while fuelling the intellect. "The Modernist home" reveals the striking results of the challenge to fit utopian modernist principles to day-to-day living. The Modernist house dissolved the closed spaces of the traditional home, modernising the bathrooms and kitchens, opening the interior to natural light and providing balconies and terraces for sun-worship and sleeping in the open air. Tim Benton uncovers its elements: from the technology that provided central heating and electric lighting; to new construction materials, such as concrete and steel; to close-ups on features like winter gardens and folding furniture. He opens the door on Modernist houses around the world, from Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, to Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion, all fully illustrated with colour photographs and plans.

Résumé:
Published on the occasion of the exhibition " Nicolas Faure, Landscape A " - Musée de l'Élysée, Lausanne, 17 november 2005 - 5 february 2006. Nicolas Faure has been working on the theme of Swiss landscape since the 1990s, concentrating in particular on the blend between the Traditional and the Modern. The motorway is the meeting point of technology, architecture and a certain concept of Nature, and through his photographs, Faure elicits aspects that characterise Switzerland. A landscape always has a cultural component and landscape is one of the major concerns of Swiss culture. The motorways, which criss-cross the country virtually, divide it. They constitute a whole “new territory”, enlivened by apparently natural but essentially man-made surroundings. These “natural surroundings” are but illusions. These places are the epitome of paradox: built amidst concrete artefacts, they are not accessible to visitors and almost invisible to motorists.

Résumé:
The third volume in this exciting series presenting young architecture and design talents, ArchiLab's Earth Buildings turns its focus to building with the land. Projects from thirty of the most innovative young practices of today—including Field Operations, Tom Leader, NOX, Servo, Vicente Guallart, and Kengo Kuma—confront and offer proposals and solutions to issues such as dwindling natural resources, land engineering, the city as ecosystem, and the sensitive development of brown sites. Presented through extensive plans, computer renderings, and photographs, buildings and large-scale schemes reveal an almost infinite array of breathtaking ideas for the future, an inspiration for a generation of designers, practitioners, and policymakers. Essays by international critics Frédéric Migayrou, Bart Lootsma, Manuel Gausa, and others consider the earth's economy and suggest how contemporary architects might best and most responsibly respond to our fragile planet in a technology-driven age.

Résumé:
"Index architecture" documents the extensive cross-fertilization of ideas that can occur between architectural practice and education. Through work developed by students and faculty at Columbia University's School of Architecture, it offers not only an archive of avant-garde work but a record of architectural discourse at a time when the design studio has been radically altered by digital technology. Writings, interviews, and images are organized according to an alphabetical "index" of key terms. Cross-referencing allows for a rich reading of concepts currently discussed in the field. The contributing critics and theorists include Stan Allen, Karen Bausman, Lise Anne Couture, Kathryn Dean, Evan Douglis, Kenneth Frampton, Leslie Gill, Thomas Hanrahan, Laurie Hawkinson, Steven Holl, Jeffrey Kipnis, Sulan Kolatan, Greg Lynn, William MacDonald, Reinhold Martin, Mary Mcleod, Victoria Meyers, Hani Rashid, Jesse Reiser, Bernard Tschumi, Nanako Umemoto, and Mark Wigley.

Résumé:
The first monograph on Portugese artist Carlos Bunga (born 1976) presents over a decade of his fantastical sculptural and painterly structures. Bunga uses only cardboard and paint to create immersive installations, furniture-like sculptures and paintings. “The Architecture of Life” surveys the artist’s sculptures, paintings, films, performances and installations from throughout his career, including the major new works created for his exhibition at the Museum of Art, Architecture, And Technology (MAAT) and Fundação Carmona e Costa in Lisbon. Whether he is using recycled materials or demolishing his own works, Bunga consistently pursues cycles of construction and destruction, and as a result explores the relationship of a space to its history and the inherent contradiction of the simultaneous impermanence and permanence of art. This volume features some of the artist’s own reflections on his work and writing from various art critics, writers and curators.

Résumé:
Though Expo 67 looms large in our collective memory, it is often remembered nostalgically as a remote historical event. The conditions that made Expo an exceptional cultural moment are often forgotten: remarkable creative freedom was granted to artists, architects, filmmakers, and designers to experiment with technology and new forms, resulting in an incredible diversity of cultural production. Originating with the Musée d'art contemporain's 2017 exhibition, In Search of Expo 67 brings together original work from nineteen artists and new critical essays to explore the connections between archives and memory. Organized thematically, artists' words and works are put into dialogue with archival imagery that reconstructs key aspects of the original event. Brilliantly illustrated with original artworks and archival documents and images, In Search of Expo 67 revitalizes this utopian moment in Montreal's history as a site of unexpected tensions and immense creativity.

Résumé:
Throughout history and across social and cultural contexts, most systems of belief—whether religious or secular—have ascribed wisdom to those who see reality as that which transcends the merely material. Yet, as the studies collected here show, the immaterial is not easily separated from the material. Humans are defined, to an extraordinary degree, by their expressions of immaterial ideals through material forms. The essays in ''Materiality'' explore varied manifestations of materiality from ancient times to the present. In assessing the fundamental role of materiality in shaping humanity, they signal the need to decenter the social within social anthropology in order to make room for the material. Considering topics as diverse as theology, technology, finance, and art, the contributors—most of whom are anthropologists—examine the many different ways in which materiality has been understood and the consequences of these differences.

Résumé:
Architecture is a constant presence in the study of human interaction- acting as both the ground on which human social behavior is performed and a means of shaping subjectivity itself. ''Proxemics'' was an attempt to visualize and instrumentalize these dynamics, appealing to both the social sciences and the emerging field of environmental design. Founded by anthropologist Edward T. Hall and taking shape between the departments of architecture and anthropology at the Illinois Institute of Technology, proxemics developed amidst cold war political tensions and intense social and civil unrest. ''Proxemics and the Architecture of Social Interaction'' presents selections from Hall’s extensive archive of visual materials alongside a critical analysis that traces transformations in the fields of design and science. Together these materials illuminate a moment in American history when new spatial practices arose to challenge the environmental conditions of cultural, political, and racial identity.

Résumé:
Several Italian architects have recently taken up the technique of collage again to present their ideas. The three masters of this tendency are Carmelo Baglivo, Luca Galofaro and Beniamino Servino, while the younger generation includes authors such as Davide Trabucco and robocoop. If collage has been one of the favorite techniques in Italian architecture since the nineteen sixties, the current collagists are new in ways that relate to developments in digital technology. They use software like Photoshop to create their images, recur to social media like Facebook to post their work and they can refer to the whole history of architectural and non-architectural imagery, which is instantly accessible on the Web. Their collages can be visual comments as well as daring fantasies. The book presents a rich selection of images and original texts dedicated to this phenomenon.

Résumé:
Wood has a centuries-long tradition as well as a huge potential for future use as a highly versatile building material. ''Crafting wood'' presents newly gained knowledge on timber construction and on timber joints in particular. This book—illustrated with plans, sketches, and photographs—emerged from an international educational cooperation of the University of Liechtenstein in Vaduz, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU in Trondheim, and the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. The program looked at a vast range of timber joints from different theoretical and practical perspectives. Students conceived and made by hand new joints that were then applied in prototypes for entire structures, also designed as part of the course, at a scale of 1:5. By analyzing this learning process, the book provides a new overview of the topic of timber joints in architecture through text and images.
