Résumé:
Following the formation of the German National Socialist Party in the 1920s, various forms of sound (popular music, voice, noise and silence) and media technology (radio and loudspeaker systems) were configured as useful to the party's political programme. Focusing on the urban "soundscape" of Düsseldorf, the author makes a persuasive case for investigating such sound events and technological devices in their specific contexts of production and reception. Nazi Soundscapes identifies strategies for controlling space and reworking identity patterns, but also the ongoing difficulties in manipulating mediated sounds and the spaces of listening reception, whether in the home, workplace, the cinema, public rituals or with wartime siren systems. The study revises visualist notions of social control, and reveals the disciplinary functions of listening (as eavesdropping) as well as the sonic dimensions to exclusion and violence during Nazism. An essential title for everyone interested in the links between German political culture, audiovisual media and urban history,Nazi Soundscapes provides a fascinating analysis of the cultural significance of sound between the 1920s and early 1940s.

Kosky focuses on a handful of artists — Walter De Maria, Diller + Scofidio, James Turrell, and Andy Goldworthy to show how they introduce spaces hospitable to mystery and wonder, redemption and revelation, and transcendence and creation. What might be thought of as religious longings, he argues, are crucial aspects of enchanting secularity when developed through encounters with these works of art. Developing a model of religion that might be significant to secular culture, Kosky shows how this model can be employed to deepen interpretation of the art we usually view as representing secular modernity.

Résumé:
Proposing a new way of understanding the relationship between the city and personal identity, The City is Me argues that there is no longer a distance between the two. The result of extensive research about our notions of the city and the person throughout time, this volume explores the technology, research findings, and new ideas that have made it impossible to sustain conceptions of the city that are based on the criterion of a boundary. Showing how this shift mirrors the decentralization and fragmentation of personal identity in a globalized world, Rosane Araujo confronts the challenge of rethinking urbanism in a way that corresponds to the risk and uncertainty--but also to the possibilities--of today's cities.

Résumé:
And Now the Ensemble!!! is intended as a challenge to architects, their clients, and commissioning authorities to understand and create urban development as a dynamic and collective work of art and to make dialogue central to design. Design, atmosphere, and usage can make every new building relate to its local surroundings. As a design process, this contextual expansion does not simply imitate the urban pattern, but also interprets what is already there, to some extent modernizes it, makes the familiar alien by employing unusual atmospheric imagery, and ultimately transforms the accumulated chaos of soloists into an orchestrated whole.

Résumé:
In this radical book, architects, historians, and theorists survey the inventive, low cost work being done in obscure places to make architecture into a force for sustainable growth and social justice. The efforts are Utopian not charitable in aim. This new breed of architect-activists is endeavoring to diversify if not reinvent their profession by engaging in an "exchange" of ideas, techniques, and visions of right living with people almost always relegated to silence and invisibility. The book opens with a range of theoretical essays, each specially commissioned, from "the site of the social" in architecture to John Hejduk's legacy, as well as five ways to change the world with Chris Marker's films. Subsequent essays form a field guide to "exchange" projects from Harlem to Port-au-Prince to Serekunda and Indore, a few still unbuilt, all virtually unknown to students of architecture. Jae Cha, Peter Clegg, Simón Vélez, and famed modernist Balkrishna Doshi demonstrate the benefits of easily found and/or scavenged materials, including bamboo. Other essays present varied alternatives to ghettoizing large groups in bleak housing complexes and urban "deserts" in architecture.

Résumé:
Wood was essential to the survival of the Venetian Republic. To build its great naval and merchant ships, maintain its extensive levee system, construct buildings, fuel industries, and heat homes, Venice needed access to large quantities of oak and beech timber. A Forest on the Sea explores the history of this enterprise and Venice's efforts to extend state control over its natural resources. Karl Appuhn explains how Venice went from an isolated city completely dependent on foreign suppliers for wood to a regional state with a sophisticated system of administering and preserving forests. This publication offers a completely novel perspective on how Renaissance Europeans thought about the natural world. It sheds new light on how cultural conceptions about nature influenced political policies for resource conservation and land management in Venice.
