Résumé:
A persistent narrative portrays the ocean as an uninhabited space. However, centuries of commercial trade and an expanding network of infrastructures above and below the water’s surface have long challenged this view, prompting researchers to conceptualise the sea as an urbanised environment. While the sea is a global arena where architecture, ecology, infrastructure, and politics intersect, its spatial dynamics remain largely uncharted. In a time of planetary urbanisation, ''The Ocean as Ground: An Offshore Theory on Urbanisation'' explores oceans as urban spaces by unveiling forgotten histories, projects, and narratives. How might we understand land urbanisation starting from the oceans? Through the conceptual lens of “ground”, the book invites readers to rethink how we perceive, design, and inhabit the spaces of both land and sea.

Résumé:
Georg Rauh (1906–1965) enhanced the Eastern Swiss architectural landscape with his work. His oeuvre, comprising around 100 buildings, is characterized by the considered placement of volumes, sensible floor plans and a subtle choice of materials. A clear programme is discernible: reduction and functionality, fully in the spirit of Bauhaus teaching. The trained carpenter studied at the Bauhaus Dessau under Hannes Meyer and Ludwig Hilberseimer, before graduating in 1932 under Mies van der Rohe. After returning to Switzerland, he worked as a teacher at a vocational school and subsequently as an architect for social housing. This catalogue of works documents his architectural heritage and its key buildings, which are portrayed by comparing the original plans, as well as in images and photographs by Ladina Bischof.

Résumé:
Venetian artist Carlo Scarpa (1906?78) was one of the outstanding architects of the twentieth century, creating buildings for museums in Venice, Florence, and Verona, as well as many other major buildings. This book focuses on a work that shows that approach to unforgettable effect: a tomb for businessman Giuseppe Brion in Treviso. In designing the tomb, Scarpa had complete freedom, working across a vast space to fuse buildings of fair-faced concrete with the surrounding landscape to create a magnificent work the invites meditation. Munich photographer Klaus Kinold documented the remarkable tomb, and his carefully composed pictures, both black-and-white and subtly using color, depict an otherworldly place that translates our ideas of growth and decay in an expansively constructed symbolism.

Résumé:
A pioneer of "Water Urbanism" and the "Sponge City" model, Kongjian Yu is not only one of the most important living landscape architects, but also a keen observer of the present. His project proposals and his reflections on urban planning in China are a practical-conceptual reference with which to attempt to unravel the emerging questions of a planet threatened by environmental catastrophes, hydrogeological risks and a water crisis. Taking the foundational geometries of rural landscapes as a model, Kongjian Yu proposes very low technology water infrastructure works which, by activating an adaptive behavior, recompose intermediate landscapes between city and nature, concrete representations of the partnership between man and the element that, more than any other, generates and protects life and water.

Résumé:
This volume is a comprehensive monograph chronicling the personal and professional journey of the Indian architect and urban conservationist Brinda Somaya, from 1975 to the present. Belonging to the 'Bridge Generation', her work transcends stylistic vocabulary and draws its inspiration from Indian culture, the landscape of the subcontinent and principles of sustainable design and intervention. The book explores a cross-section of Somaya's diverse typology of projects, including housing, institutions, conservation, urban design, social design and industrial works that represent a unique 'non-stylistic' grammar that has a sense of 'order and appropriateness'. Situating her work in a broader context, the essays in this volume offer multiple perspectives on Somaya's accomplishments, while the dialogues outline the concerns central to her work.

Résumé:
This fully illustrated catalogue of the major retrospective exhibition provides an in-depth examination of the work of one of today’s most visionary architects. The first woman to be awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 2004, Zaha Hadid is known for projects that have literally "shifted the geometry of buildings." The Iraqi-born, London-based architect has collaborated with the Guggenheim on several projects leading up to this comprehensive retrospective, including the design for the museum’s exhibition The Great Utopia in 1992. Each of Hadid’s dynamic and innovative works builds on over 30 years of experimentation and research in the interrelated fields of urbanism, architecture and design. True to Hadid’s interdisciplinary approach to architecture, all mediums will be covered here. Having first achieved international recognition through her striking images and designs, Zaha Hadid is now widely known as an innovator who consistently tests the boundaries of architecture, urbanism and design. One of her most important "testing fields" has been her drawings. Her reconsideration of the architectural drawing through nontraditional floor plans has had a major impact on all areas of design and architecture. Once considered unbuildable, her projects can now be seen around the world, including major projects in Europe, North America and Asia. Hadid’s most recent work incorporates smooth surfaces where walls seem to melt, floors curving upward, and ceilings that appear to compress, bend and expand. In her designs, architecture emerges not as an isolated object but out of the surrounding landscape and urban environment, and as a result of its users' movements and paths. Her work addresses "fluid geometries" and "artificial natures." The book features color illustrations of designs and models, previously unpublished paintings and photographs of buildings at all stages of construction, as well as two previously unpublished interviews with Hadid by Alvin Boyarsky.
