Résumé:
Concrete and stone seem made to last forever. But the fact is they develop problems. It is not always as dramatic as the collapse of a section of the roof of the Paris Charles de Gaulle airport in 2004. Gradual changes also occur that may compromise the appearance and structural soundness of buildings constructed with these materials. These changes can be created by efflorescence, thermal stress, weathering, leakage and corrosion. This book explains how to avoid typical kinds of failure. With this in mind, it systematically analyzes cases of damage in contemporary international architecture. It also offers strategies for minimizing the risk of damage. Examples include such high-visibility structures as Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Parco della Musica in Rome and Vontz Center for Molecular Studies in Cincinnatti. In eight chapters, typical kinds of damage are explained and illustrated with examples.

Authored by the interdisciplinary Brooklyn-based design studio MODU, this reader explores the space between the interior and the exterior in architecture. How does the design of interior spaces align with the world ''outside,'' and vice versa? Where can the boundaries between the interior and the urban be drawn? What role does the environment play in this? Led by Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem, MODU focuses on the marriage of urbanism and nature in its architectural and interior design projects, leaving behind the binary of inside and outside, and instead understanding architecture as an extension of the environment, imagining a hybrid of urban space, architecture and interior space. For this volume, Hoang and Rotem look to three major cities on different continents—New York, Rome and Tokyo—and consider examples from each of indoor urbanism and architectural climate adaptation.

Résumé:
Spanning almost five millennia, this volume tells a new history of premodern architecture through the material of precious stone. Illustrated examples include the synthetic gems used to simulate Sumerian and Egyptian heavens; the marble temples and mansions of Greece and Rome; the painted palaces and polychrome marble chapels of early modern Italy; and the multimedia revival in 19th-century England. Poetry, the lens for understanding costly marbles as an artistic medium, summoned a spectrum of imaginative associations and responses, from princes and patriarchs to the populace. Three salient themes sustained this “lithic imagination”: marbles as images of their own elemental substance according to premodern concepts of matter and geology; the perceived indwelling of astral light in earthly stones; and the enduring belief that colored marbles exhibited a form of natural—or divine—painting, thanks to their vivacious veining, rainbow palette, and chance images.

Résumé:
This illustrated collection features designers and projects that push the boundaries of art and architecture. "Architecture : art" explores the disparate ways in which contemporary artists and architects handle the blurring lines between their disciplines. Contemporary art often oversteps the limits of its traditional concepts and modes of presentation, increasingly moving into virtual and actual spaces. Similarly, many of today's architects depart from the principles of classical modernism and historical models to integrate artistic concepts into the design and construction of their buildings. The book highlights the most exciting examples of these interdisciplinary activities, from Zaha Hadid's Guggenheim Museum in Taichung, Taiwan to Richard Meier's Jubilee Church in Rome, Italy, and from Hiroshi Sugimoto's Go'o Shrine to Richard Serra's Torqued Ellipses. Profiles of the featured artists and architects are included, along with an introductory essay elucidating the historical foundations from which architecture and art have coevolved to the present day.

Résumé:
This book is about enlarging the ways designers think about design, doing so by learning more about the maturing sciences of human life-evolution, ecology, and the neurosciences-the sciences that explore how you or I actually experience the places being built for us and why we respond the ways we do. The new insights are as revolutionary in their way as the re-discovery of ancient Greece and Rome by humanists in the Renaissance. That was a time of dazzling creativity, with new ways of thinking about human nature. We're facing that kind of opportunity again. The book starts with our "Origins" as we evolved, immersed in the natural world. Then our actual experience is explored in "The mind that encounters architecture" and "The body that responds." And then "the languages of humanism" applies these ideas to design and the role of aesthetic experience.

In the highly acclaimed "The Geography of Nowhere," James Howard Kunstler declared suburbia "a tragic landscape" and fueled a fierce debate over how we will live in twenty-first-century America. Here, Kunstler turns his discerning eye to urban life in America and beyond in dazzling excursions to classical Rome, the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, Louis-Napoleon's Paris, the "gigantic hairball" that is contemporary Atlanta, the ludicrous spectacle of Las Vegas, and more. Seeking to discover what is constant and enduring in cities at their greatest, Kunstler explores how America got lost in suburban wilderness and locates pathways that might lead to civic revival. His authoritative tour is both a concise history of cities and a stunning critique of how they can aid or hinder social and civil progress. By turns dramatic and comic, "The City in Mind" is an exceptional glimpse into the urban condition.

Résumé:
Breaking free from twenty years of fascist rule, post-war Italy became fertile ground for brutalist architecture. Stark new concrete forms reshaped Italian urban landscapes with bold landmarks, from the iconic Torre Velasca in the centre of Milan to the controversial Vele di Scampia housing complex on the periphery of Naples. This playful and engaging book guides readers around these examples of Italian brutalist architecture, informing curious explorers about their features, failures, and successes, with a special focus on public housing estates such as “Lavatrici” in Genoa, Nuovo Corviale in Rome, Vele di Scampia in Naples, and Rozzol Melara in Trieste. The first half of Brutalia opens with a foreword by Italian architect and writer Alessandro Benetti; it includes photographs of the featured buildings and details on their histories. The second section contains five pre-cut and pre-folded models to press out and assemble. All you need is glue!
