Résumé:
"Hunch 9" asserts a broad disciplinary claim regarding architectural publications generally: it is not the quantities of publications that are a problem, but rather their consistent failure to present lines of reasoning. This inadequacy will be addressed by disciplining the issue : by organizing projects, lectures, interviews and essays into a set of arguments about 'disciplines'. 'Return' will discuss the current erosion of architecture's disciplinary distinctions; 'Resonate' will examine the perspectives of other disciplines such as music, money, planning and film; 'Reason' will trace theoretical precedents for architectural autonomy, expertise, and education; 'Realize' will make connections between theory and practices through Berlage research-production processes, construction technology, form and precedent; and 'Relay' will expose the various disciplinary transfers in and out of architectural practice. Texts for this issue include essays and lectures by Brian Eno, Jeff Kipnis, Bernard Cache, Lieven de Cauter, Mark Linder, Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Richard Sennett, Paul Morrell, Helene Furján, Peter Trummer, Ronald Wall, Rem Koolhaas, a master class by Greg Lynn, a studio with Salvador Perez Arroyo and an interview with R.E. Somol. Graphic design : Mick Morsink.

Résumé:
Boston played a crucial role in the development of American photography, including criticism, collecting, and curating, in the second half of the twentieth century. This book accompanies a landmark exhibition at the DeCordova Museum that includes such important American artists as Berenice Abbott, Harry Callahan, Paul Caponigro, Marie Cosindas, Harold Edgerton, Nan Goldin, Jerome Liebling, Nicholas Nixon, Barbara Norfleet, Olivia Parker, Rosamond Purcell, Aaron Siskind, and Minor White. The period from 1955 to 1985 reflects photography's acceptance as an art form, the influence of modernism, and the coalescence of a unique constellation of educational institutions, museums, and technological development in the Boston area that directly influenced artistic options for photography. Minor White's arrival at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965 to run the Center for Creative Photography and the Polaroid Corporation's innovative support of photographic art suggest how developments built upon one another to create a regional critical mass in photography. The book contains twenty-five color plates, sixty duotones, and essays by A. D. Coleman, Rachel Rosenfield Lafo, Arno Rafael Minkkinen, and Kim Sichel.

Résumé:
Architecture and music share many parallel and intersecting elements. Recent developments in the music, film, and media industries have given rise to new building types for audio and visual media. These projects require a comprehensive approach from various disciplines to bridge architecture, art and technology. For more than 10 years studio bau:ton has been pre-eminently involved in drawing together these diverse disciplines. This book is an eclectic survey of issues central to building for contemporary media. Renowned guest authors from the fields of media and architecture have contributed ideas and projects, and an detailed overview of architectural acoustics serves as an integrated technical guide. Practical applications are presented in an illustrated portfolio of distinguished projects by studio bau:ton, ranging from museums to recording studios and film production facilities. Projects like the Fox Scoring Stage in Los Angeles or Bad Animals in Seattle are complemented by international examples such as Sony Music in Tokyo, X-Art in Austria and many more. Peter Grueneisen is the principal architect and a founder of studio bau:ton.

Résumé:
Completed in 2019, the Swatch and Omega Campus in Biel (Bienne), Switzerland, is a magnificent example of technology, design, and environmental sustainability working in concert to create a space that promotes the health of users and the planet. This book illustrates every aspect of the project, including drawings, plans, and numerous interior and exterior photographs. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Shigeru Ban has experienced firsthand the trauma of natural disasters, which he has addressed in numerous emergency-relief projects. With the Swatch and Omega campus, Ban demonstrates how sustainable architecture can benefit industry as well, and why he promotes timber as the planet's only truly renewable resource. Philip Jodidio introduces readers to the buildings' ingenious and cutting-edge features--a serpentine, cocoon-like facade that echoes the playful elements of the Swatch brand; a gridshell roof structure consisting of thousands of precisely interlocking timber pieces. The Omega buildings with their clean straight lines are equally innovative and express the contrast between the two related brands. A feat of forward-thinking architecture, this corporate headquarters represents a benchmark for future building projects around the world.

Résumé:
Josep Lluís Mateo is one of Spain’s leading architects and one of Europe’s most influential architectural intellectuals. He runs a firm called mateoarquitectura in Barcelona, which has designed buildings in many countries across Europe. Alongside his work as guest lecturer, Mateo was professor of design at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zürich from 2002 to 2014. Mateo’s standing as a pacesetter in the international intellectual discourse about the future of architecture is closely tied to the journal "Quaderns d’Arquitectura i Urbanisme," which has appeared in Catalan, Spanish, and English since 1985 and of which he was editor in chief from 2002 to 2014. Under Mateo, it developed into the leading platform for discussions on architectural issues, urban design, and aesthetic concepts. "Footprints" collects Mateo’s most important writings from the last fifteen years—short and longer essays and vignettes, along with interviews touching on core questions of contemporary architecture as well as on Mateo’s own designs. The pieces are illustrated and arranged thematically to allow juxtapositions and inspire new connections.

Résumé:
Today, artists are engaged in investigation. They probe corruption, human rights violations, environmental crimes and technological domination. At the same time, areas not usually thought of as artistic make powerful use of aesthetics. Journalists and legal professionals pore over opensource videos and satellite imagery to undertake visual investigations. This combination of diverse fields is what the authors call “investigative aesthetics”: the mobilisation of sensibilities associated with art, architecture and other such practices in order to speak truth to power. ''Investigative Aesthetics'' draws on theories of knowledge, ecology and technology; evaluates the methods of citizen counter-forensics, micro-history and art; and examines radical practices such as those of WikiLeaks, Bellingcat, and Forensic Architecture. These new practices take place in the studio and the laboratory, the courtroom and the gallery, online and in the streets, as they strive towards the construction of a new common sense. Matthew Fuller and Eyal Weizman have here provided an inspiring introduction to a new field that will change how we understand and confront power today.

Résumé:
The problem of rent is at the root of vital social concerns in the twenty-first century, ranging from the climate emergency and spiralling economic inequality to the repercussions of global economic crises. But while many of us may be familiar with rent (especially paying it), how should we really understand it? Examining both concrete contexts and complex concepts, in this book Joe Collins provides a comprehensive but concise survey of the theories and debates over rent and rentier capitalism. He examines global gentrification from São Paolo to Dublin, the tyranny of technology from Taipei to San Francisco, and the excesses of extractivism from Sekondi to Karratha. In doing so, he reveals how rent is fundamental to the current dominant form of capitalist social organization across the globe and how we can prevent the next generation from seeing our societies rent asunder. An essential resource for students and scholars alike, this groundbreaking book will be of interest to anyone working on capitalism, property, political economy, economic sociology and contemporary politics.

Résumé:
The Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP), directed by Dirk Denison from within the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), promotes an academic award that is given to the best architecture built in the American continent during a specific period. ''MCHAP The Americas 2: Territory & expeditions,'' is inspired on the discussions held during the second cycle of the prize, which took place in 2016. Based on the selection of the finalist projects—Weekend House by SPBR, New Campus for the UTEC by Grafton Architects, Pachacamac Museum by Llosa Cortegana Architects, Tower 41 by Alberto Kalach, Star Apartmens by Michael Maltzan Architecture, and Grace Farms by SANAA—, the jury conversations and ''discoveries'' were very much conditioned by the ideas of nature and its intimate relation to architecture and landscape. This book is part a reader, part a catalogue, part a visual essay/research on these matters. The texts and projects are in themselves contributions to the field as they show new understandings about the relationship between architecture and its environment as well as singularities and genealogies of the most prominent architectures of the Americas.

Résumé:
From the mid-eighteenth century to the nineteen-twenties, from the birth of the Industrial Revolution to the height of Manchester’s global significance and the beginning of its decline, ''Shock city'' challenges the idea that Paris was the ''capital of the nineteenth century.'' Mark Crinson reorients this issue around the development of industrial production, particularly cotton and its manufacture by means of steam power, offering a fascinating and accessibly written account of how new relations in the industrial economy were manifested through the spaces and representations of the first industrial city. Focusing on Manchester’s mills and warehouses, its main trading institution (the Royal Exchange), its magnificent Gothic Revival Town Hall, and its late Gothic Revival Rylands Library, this book explores these iconic buildings alongside paintings, prints, maps, and photographs of the city throughout the period. Crinson interweaves analysis of buildings and images, urban spaces and new institutions, technology and industrial pollution to show how these were all the products of Manchester’s newly emergent industrial middle classes, who remade the city in their image.
