Given an ideal situation to work with, the Zurich architects Marcel Meili and Markus Peter designed and built a new training and meeting center for Swiss Re in Rüschlikon. Backed by an ambitious client and a substantial budget, they developed an expansive park complex overlooking Lake Zurich and the Bodmer mansion, a protected historical monument, into a setting in which architecture and art, landscape and interior space, old and new combine to form a complex whole. The result is not a manifesto of a particular style but the equally perfect and subtle interpretation of a real place and the programmatic vision it inspires. The Art Commission of Swiss Re chose a "strategy of systematic artistic interventions in existing space". The design of all furniture and interiors was entrusted to the hands of renowned artists and architects. Adolf Krischanitz and Hermann Czech designed the furniture and the "Red Bar" in the Gardener's Lodge. Gilbert Bretterbauer supervised the design and selection of textiles. Artist Günther Förg handled the color design for all of the interiors in the old mansion. The old grounds had been preserved almost entirely in their original condition. The existing stands of trees served as a framework for the detailed design of the park complex by landscape architects Kienast Vogt and Partner. With photographs by Margherita Spiluttini

Beginning with discussions of 'fine' art and painting and progressing to analysis of carving and sculpture, ceramics, glassware and textiles, the authors demonstrate how, in the age of the Emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong, the 'decorative' arts rose to a prominence quite unlike the western experience. Avoiding misrepresentative categorization, they single out period styles, as well as identifying repeated phases of archaism and Buddhist art, and discuss characteristic groups of jade, ivory, ceramics, glassware and textiles. They consider the importance of the imperial workshops and their role in developing craftsmen's skills and encouraging the cross-over of techniques from different disciplines and they present the compelling influence of Emperor Qianlong's aesthetic innovations. In architecture the vast plan and overwhelming authority of the imperial buildings contrasts with the restrained subtlety of domestic architecture and garden design where magnificent rocks were the principal feature, just as in landscape painting. The survey concludes by examining the development of East/West trade and the effects of commercialization on Chinese arts and crafts. Designing the interdisciplinary university as a city within one building, including student housing, the campus stages public spaces of encounter to activate the concept of the student as a global citizen in a new world order. This sixties humanist imagination of the student shapes the spatial program of the architecture, a program which clashes with the current neoliberal view of the student as entrepreneur. The third book in Bitter and Weber's series on architecture and the educational complex, Encounter Educational Modernism is an artistic research project on the architecture of the University of Lethbridge and on modernist imaginations of education. Takashi Homma first encountered the work of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in Chandigarh in 2013, while producing photographs commissioned by the CCA, some of which are included in this book. Following that experience, he decided to research and photograph the spatial and perceptual richness of windows in other works by Le Corbusier across the world. His research is part of the Windowology program initiated by the Window Research Institute, which aims to define the position of windows in the history of architecture across cultures—in this particular case, their role as spaces, rather than surfaces, that connect the interior of a building and the surrounding landscape, or the private and the public. An essay by Tim Benton complements Homma’s photographs by tracing the evolution of the concept of windows in Le Corbusier’s work.
