This fleeting, variable essence drives him to photograph many of his works in order to record them and their evolution for posterity. The installation Goldsworthy prepared especially for the Crystal Palace is one of the artist's most ambitious wood dome projects so far, enlarging upon the vaulted spaces he used previously in London and Yorkshire. The form of the wooden structures blends in with the architecture of the palace which becomes its glass epidermis.

At the time, this vision was nothing short of revolutionary. Today, such concepts are not only a reality but have advanced significantly. Virtual and digital realities are now integral to designing, planning, and constructing spaces – far more than mere devices for experiencing them. Lengthy construction workflows, optimised designs, and the complex coordination of planning, cost control, and project management are increasingly digitalised. We can now program buildings to meet parametric specifications, construct homes using 3D printing, and create detailed 3D models of existing buildings to analyse them before renovation even begins. While landscape has transformed dramatically, digitalisation in architecture is clearly still in its early stages. To begin the year, this issue shines a spotlight on the digital present and future of architecture, exploring how digital tools can enhance sustainability. Our project documentations showcase an array of approaches, from digital material passports to parametric models and BIM applications for existing structures. Sound is everywhere and plays a crucial role in the experience and perception of public space. Nevertheless, in the reflection about that space and its organization, the visual image usually takes centre stage. Over recent years, however, there seems to have been a sensitization to the auditory aspects of daily life and the public domain. In the visual arts in particular, but also in architecture and landscape architecture, people are studying the potential of sound as an element that can lend meaning in relation to social or spatial surroundings. The medium of radio seems to be undergoing a cultural revival, and research into image-sound relationships has become an important subject within the field of 'cultural studies'. What is the role of sound and the sense of hearing in the public domain? An investigation of the topicality and the effects of sound, from the perspectives of cultural philosophy, art theory and media theory, could provide fresh insights into the current conditions of the public domain. Avoiding the shock and awe of wartime images, it explores the contemporary spatial configurations of power camouflaged in the infrastructures, environments, and scales of military operations. Instead of wartime highs, this book starts with drawdown lows, when demobilization and decommissioning morph into realignment and prepositioning. It is in this transitional milieu that the full material magnitudes and geographic entanglements of contemporary militarism are laid bare. Through this perpetual cycle of build up and breakdown, the U.S. Department of Defense—the single largest developer, landowner, equipment contractor, and energy consumer in the world—has engineered a planetary assemblage of “operational environments” in which militarized, demilitarized, and non-militarized landscapes are increasingly inextricable. In a series of critical cartographic essays, Pierre Bélanger and Alexander Arroyo trace this footprint far beyond the battlefield, countermapping the geographies of U.S. militarism across five of the most important and embattled operational environments: the ocean, the atmosphere, the highway, the city, and the desert. From the Indian Ocean atoll of Diego Garcia to the defense-contractor archipelago around Washington, D.C.; from the A01 Highway circling Afghanistan’s high-altitude steppe to surveillance satellites pinging the planet from low-earth orbit; and from the vast cold chain conveying military perishables worldwide to the global constellation of military dumps, sinks, and scrapyards, the book unearths the logistical infrastructures and residual landscapes that render strategy spatial, militarism material, and power operational. One of the most famous books in the world, the ''Hypnerotomachia Poliphili,'' read by every Renaissance intellectual and referred to in studies of art and culture ever since, was first published in English by Thames & Hudson in 1999. It is a strange, pagan, pedantic, erotic, allegorical, mythological romance relating in highly stylized Italian the quest of Poliphilo for his beloved Polia. The author (presumed to be Francesco Colonna, a friar of dubious reputation) was obsessed by architecture, landscape, and costume- it is not going too far to say sexually obsessed- and its 174 woodcuts are a primary source for Renaissance ideas on both buildings and gardens. In 1592 an attempt was made to produce an English version but the translator gave up. The task has been triumphantly accomplished by Joscelyn Godwin, who succeeds in reproducing all its wayward charm and arcane learning in language accessible to the modern reader.
