Depuis 2015, l’exposition « Improbabilis, le végétal sous les obus » voyage de ville en ville, de galeries d’arts en lieux culturels atypiques. Entre architecture, paysage, urbanisme, histoire, botanique et poésie, ce projet éditorial est la suite de l’exposition, une hybridation expérimentale. Avec les photographies d’Anthony Rojo, issues des expositions d’Improbabilis, le végétal sous les obus. Les pare-bombes en béton de la Base sous-marine de Bordeaux ont volé en éclats par endroits sous l’intensité des obus alliés, laissant des trous béants dans l’armature du toit du bâtiment de guerre. Aussi improbables qu’ils soient, ces trous accueillent désormais des paysages à la végétation spontanée, riche et variée. Chênes, frênes, saules, fougères, orchidées sauvages. Au fil des décennies, et sans l’intervention de l’Homme, un écosystème s’est installé dans les débris.

Conceived as part of a long-term project at the CCA to examine the contemporary role of photography in the study and practice of architecture, The Lives of Documents — Photography as Project prompts reflections on the idea of the documentary as an embedded quality of photography. Tracing the research materials, archiving practices, and production processes of diverse authors, photographers Bas Princen and Stefano Graziani highlight a selection of photographic projects that model our visible world by investigating notions of landscape and its destruction, global infrastructure, intimacy and interiority, and conditions of urban and domestic space and life. This publication follows Princen and Graziani’s travels to understand how artists use photography as a tool for their artistic research and how they conceive of their projects as evolving and expanding explorations. Bringing together studio visit images, artist interviews, and Princen and Graziani’s own reproduction of photographic projects, it emphasizes how photography reveals and expresses lived and built realities in ways that traditional architectural tools fail to represent or communicate.

"Boulevard" is a visual tale of two disparate cities: Paris and Los Angeles. In the early seventies, Adam Bartos began to use color photography to document the contemporary urban landscape, infusing his images with a certain quietude and finding composition in even the most random corners of life. He often focused his lens on his native New York, and he published a monumental series of photographs of the modern architecture of the United Nations. In the late seventies, and then again in the early eighties, Bartos traveled to Los Angeles and Paris, taking his camera with him. The two trips would have a strong and lasting impact on his vision, and yet until recently, he had never considered the two cities — or bodies of work — together. In "Boulevard", this is not the L.A. or Paris of postcards. As we venture through the scarcely inhabited hotel rooms, backyards, gas stations, and inevitably, city streets, we are struck by the graphical relationships and the surprisingly similar color palates. There is a magnetic attraction and repulsion between these two photo series and cities — polar opposites that, at unexpected moments, converge and suddenly attract. With a preface by Geoff Dyer.

“A terrible mechanism [is] on the march, its gears multiplying.” So begins the 48th issue of Harvard Design Magazine, guest edited by Mark Lee, chair of the department of architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Florencia Rodriguez, editorial director of -Ness Magazine. The issue takes as its theme the slippery and ambiguous figure of “America,” seen through the lens of the built and unbuilt environment. Americanization—once the “terrible mechanism” bent on pressing capitalist values on emerging economies everywhere—is now in retreat, eclipsed by the more urgent domestic concerns of pandemic and climate change, racial injustice and domestic radicalization. The very notion of what constitutes America is ripe for redefinition. The America Issue of Harvard Design Magazine, featuring a new design and art direction by Alexis Mark, invites historians, architects, landscape architects, urban designers, theorists, curators, artists, and planners to reflect on the country’s past and present, and to imagine sustainable futures. Projects, taxonomies, dialogues, essays, and spatial interpretations explore possible Americas. They allow us to delve into issues relevant to small cities, towns, and rural areas—as well as major urban centers—and to study barriers and opportunities facing communities across the country.
