Résumé:
In the latest series from Anastasia Samoylova, the Russian-born, Miami-based photographer studies the proliferation of photographic images in urban environments across the world. Samoylova observes how, in our neoliberal era of networked economic markets and networked imagery, the global centers of internationalized money and culture are becoming increasingly aligned and similar: "all these cities are moving towards a generic urban landscape of anonymous steel and glass architecture in which homes, offices and storefronts all appear and feel the same. This is a new global order in which old ideas of nationality are at odds with the 21st-century notion of borderless economics and transnational culture. And yet, those older ideas are now deployed as attractive marketing devices, giving the illusion that these cities are somehow still appealing in their uniqueness rooted in the past." Samoylova’s work also points to the role photography plays in creating this ideological gap between branded urban identity and lived reality.

Résumé:
By the end of the twentieth century, US architecture and engineering firms held more capital than entire countries, employed more people than were housed in most cities, and rented offices in more nations than comprised the UN. Within them, architects were designing not single buildings but urban systems, including the multinational infrastructures, legal codes, and financial mechanisms on which those systems came to depend. However, despite the extraordinary power of these architects, their histories remain shrouded in myth and concealed—by design. This forensic analysis traces a history of architects at one such firm, AECOM, as they assembled their own multinational corporation and embedded themselves in the operations of American empire after World War II, shielding themselves from the instabilities of a postwar political economy. ''Incorporating Architects'' reveals how architects, through their businesses more than their drawings or buildings, modulated the political economy, gripped the reins of their profession, and produced the global injustices that define our neoliberal present.

Résumé:
Japanese architect Shuhei Endo can be defined as an architect of steel, since he distinctly favors this material in the buildings he designs, continually experimenting with its infinite possibilities. His works are apparently weightless: undulating sheets of steel are twisted into spirals and wrapped around buildings in overlapping layers, like petals of flowers, or arranged on different levels to create a membrane around open spaces. This approach is most evident in the "great roofs" that house Endo-designed offices, such as Rooftecture N (Nisinomiya, Hyogo, 1998), or spaces for relaxation and meetings, such as Rooftecture T (Fukui, 1997), as well as private homes, such as Springtecture H (Harima, 1998) and Rooftecture M (Maruoka, 2001). Born in 1960 in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, he graduated in 1986 from the Kyoto School of Art and then joined the Osamu Ishii & Biken Associates architectural studio. In 1988 he founded the Shuhei Endo Institute in Osaka and began teaching at Kinki University, Kobe Design University, and the Fukui Institute of Technology.

Résumé:
Bernard Rudofsky steps outside the narrowly defined discipline that has governed our sense of architectural history and discusses the art of building as a universal phenomenon. He introduces the reader to communal architecture--architecture produced not by specialists but by the spontaneous and continuing activity of a whole people with a common heritage, acting within a community experience. A prehistoric theater district for a hundred thousand spectators on the American continent and underground towns and villages (complete with schools, offices, and factories) inhabited by millions of people are among the unexpected phenomena he brings to light. The beauty of "primitive" architecture has often been dismissed as accidental, but today we recognize in it an art form that has resulted from human intelligence applied to uniquely human modes of life. Indeed, Rudofsky sees the philosophy and practical knowledge of the untutored builders as untapped sources of inspiration for industrial man trapped in his chaotic cities.

Résumé:
"Patterned Ground" unravels the entangled relationships between nature and culture. Around 100 entries by leading names in new geography and related disciplines focus on various ‘objects’ in the landscape – from beaches to battlefields, bees to horses, police stations to post-offices, trees to tractors. Each piece, written by an expert in the field, explores the way in which we understand that object and its relationship to the world around it. This book is neither encyclopædia nor dictionary, but a knowledgeable and impassioned engagement with the world. In this sense, it chimes with earlier experiments in understanding the earth and its landscapes, whether these endeavours have been conducted within the sciences, the social sciences or the arts. "Patterned Ground" backtracks from familiar and obvious ways of seeing patterns in the world, and discovers it anew. In this way, it opens up new possibilities for thinking about the relationships between ourselves, objects and the ground on which we walk.

Résumé:
This book is published as a result of the award of the Rotterdam Maaskant Prize for Young Architects - previously won by John Körmeling, Mecanoo, Wiel Arets, Willem Jan Neutelings, Liesbeth van der Pol, Adriaan Geuze and Christian Rapp - to four young urban designers: Bindels, Gietema, Hartzema en Klok. Alongside their activities at various offices like MVRDV, OMA and West 8, they take part in competitions and make design studies as an occasional quartet. This collaborative framework enables them to explore the boundaries of urban design, not by flirting with today's image culture, but by responding to changing conditions and contemporary building tasks. The four winners describe various schemes they have made for designing the Netherlands. Following the jury report the book divides into three sections, tracing the path taken by Dutch urban design since 1966 and the position the quartet of winners occupy in its evolution, documenting four projects and drawing on the opinions of key figures and clients from the world of spatial planning.

Résumé:
Since 2015, Mexican architect Francisco Pardo has run his own practice in fast-growing and fast-changing Mexico City. His projects have reflected how Mexico is transforming the idea of the Latin American city: part ancient, part colonial, part futuristic. His Havre 69 project, created with his partner from architecture firm at103, Julio Amezcua, repurposes a 100-year-old residence for upper-middle-class families into offices, 12 separate residences, a bakery and a restaurant. On the one hand, Pardo exposes large sections of brick and maintains the original tile, while on the other, he builds modernist concrete and glass boxes that frame the original façade. Likewise, the architect's Milan44 project takes an autoparts store in a warehouse in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City and creates a vertical urban market that brings the storefront street level onto each level of the structure. The architecture of Francisco Pardo reflects a fresh direction in the vast project of building Latin America into the future.

Résumé:
Embedded in politically and economically charged sites in the Pearl River Delta, Mongolia, and the European Union, 51N4E (Johan Anrys and Freek Persyn) and Rural Urban Framework (Joshua Bolchover and John Lin) operate in expanded ecologies of architectural practice, questioning the role of the architect today. By collaborating with policymakers, local contractors, and NGOs, and by engaging their respective labs at ETH Zu¨rich and the University of Hong Kong as key research locations, both offices investigate new forms of cooperation and dialogue as crucial strategies for design. 51N4E and RUF work at the seams of urbanization, with projects situated in transitional settlements in Ulaanbaatar, the rural regions of China, the transforming neighborhoods of Brussels, and Albania’s shifting public spaces. This publication compares their research and design processes in order to question the extents and certainties of architecture against backdrops of indeterminate notions of citizenship, unstable stages of urbanization, and insecure economies and ecologies.

Résumé:
Mist-shrouded landscapes and remote farmsteads represent just one of the Waldviertel’s many faces: with the expansion of Krems into a cultural center pulsing with vitality, important new architectural milestones have been set. A pronounced environmental awareness is an essential part of the Waldviertel’s identity and has also found concrete expression in the work of the region’s innovative architectural offices. The freshness of summer has been historically significant in the Waldviertel, as the public baths and villas of the interwar period attest. At the same time, along the border to the Czech Republic, paralyzed for decades by the Iron Curtain, it is the confrontation with the region’s own history that is most apparent. In short, the Waldviertel is in a state of flux, a status that its architecture both reflects and is central in shaping. The new third volume in this series is presented by Springer Publishing and addresses over 160 buildings from 1919 to the present in essays.
