Résumé:
This publication brings together the manifold, international and multidisciplinary contributions of the GameSetandMatch II conference - the architecture co-laboratory, directed by Kas Oosterhuis, professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Delft University of technology, the Netherlands. It adresses contemporary and future changes within and across the boundaries of digitally driven architectural and design practices. The notion of architecture as a co-laboratory accentuates this strong devotion to experimentation and collaboration. In so doing it offers a kaleidoscopic view of, rather than a defines perspective on current developments in the digital design domain. The authors of the essays and papers included in this book come from very diverse backgrounds ranging from architecture and design to technology and engineering as well as computer sciences and humanities. An interlaced series of three thematic areas - 'Play', 'Geometry ++' and 'Open Source' - will relate diverse sources of knowledge and enable the reader to cross reference, question, recontextualize, and even create new connections among the content presented. "GameSetandMatch II" includes contributions from Robert Aish, Ole Bouman, Raoul Bunschoten, Bernard Cache, Jan Edler and Tim Edler, Georg Flachbart, John Frazer, Mark Goulthorpe, Branko Kolarevic, Anne Nigten, Marcos Novak, Kas Oosterhuis, Antonino Saggio, Katie Salen, Norbert Streitz, Tom Verebes, Peter Weibel and many more.

Résumé:
In 1982, the protests of antiporn feminists sparked the censorship of the ''Diary of a Conference on Sexuality'', a radical and sexually evocative image-text volume whose silencing became a symbol for the irresolvable feminist sex wars. ''In Visible archives'' documents the community networks that produced this resonant artifact and others, analyzing how visual culture provided a vital space for women artists to theorize and visualize their own bodies and sexualities. Margaret Galvan explores a number of feminist and cultural touchstones—the feminist sex wars, the HIV/AIDS crisis, the women in print movement, and countercultural grassroots periodical networks—and examines how visual culture interacts with these pivotal moments. She goes deep into the records to bring together a decade’s worth of research in grassroots and university archives that include comics, collages, photographs, drawings, and other image-text media produced by women, including Hannah Alderfer, Beth Jaker, Marybeth Nelson, Roberta Gregory, Lee Marrs, Alison Bechdel, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Nan Goldin. The art highlighted in ''In Visible archives'' demonstrates how women represented their bodies and sexualities on their own terms and created visibility for new, diverse identities, thus serving as blueprints for future activism and advocacy—work that is urgent now more than ever as LGBTQ+ and women’s rights face challenges and restrictions across the nation.

Résumé:
"Substance over Spectacle" presents the best and brightest architectural work in Canada in the last ten years, providing a representative sample of Canadian architectural practice since the early nineties, and demonstrating a specific Canadian sensibility that is unlike any architectural trend elsewhere in the world. The book also explores issues of viability, sustainability, community, and utility as they relate to the Canadian architectural experience. Included is the work of twenty-five architects from every area of the country, each represented by an installation of their own design and construction. In addition to photographs of the finished projects, "Substance over Spectacle" also features images of models and architectural drawings, together with analytical/critical text demonstrating the architectural ideas embedded in the work. Five essays deal with different aspects of contemporary Canadian architecture, written by some of Canada’s leading thinkers on architecture: George Baird, Sherry McKay, Marco Polo, Georges Adamczyk, and Andrew Gruft. Publication of the book coincides with an exhibition of the same name mounted by the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia, in April 2005, during the international conference of the Society of Architectural Historians, which is taking place at UBC. "Substance over Spectacle", the first national critical overview of Canadian architecture in some eighteen years, offers fresh new perspectives on how our architecture defines us as we approach the first mid-decade of the new century.

Résumé:
What would it mean today to think or to imagine, to design or to construct, in relation not to "things made" but to "things in the making"? This question, first posed by the philosopher William James, was the point of departure for "The Pragmatist Imagination". The volume brings together position statements, theoretical speculations, and critical commentary by 33 leading thinkers and makers from over a dozen disciplines. Based on the proceedings of an international workshop held at Columbia University under the auspices of the Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture in spring 2000, a preamble to the much-ballyhooed conference at the Museum of Modern Art in November, 2000, the contributions traverse a set of burning questions about the future, ranging from the relationship between art and experience to the impact of new technologies on human consciousness, from transformations in everyday life to problems of public space, and from the destiny of the nation-state to emergent forms of transnationalism. The authors include Stanley Aronowitz, Marshall Berman, Casey Nelson Blake, Sandra Buckley, Teresa Caldeira, Jean-Louis Cohen, Jonathan Crary, Rosalyn Deutsche, Kenneth Frampton, Gerald E. Frug, Peter Galison, Elizabeth Grosz, Andreas Huyssen, Isaac Joseph, David Lapoujade, Reinhold Martin, Brian Massumi, Mary McLeod, Paul Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky, Chantal Mouffe, Joan Ockman, John Rajchman, Martha Rosler, Hashim Sarkis, Saskia Sassen, Sandhya Shukla, Richard Shusterman, Abdoumaliq Simone, Anders Stephanson, Bernard Tschumi, Nadia Urbinati, Mabel Wilson, and Gwendolyn Wright. The book includes an introduction by John Rajchman and an afterword by Casey Nelson Blake.
