In 2012 André Cepeda spent three intense months in São Paulo, exploring and photographing the city while reevaluating the very nature of his practice. The thrill of discovering a new territory, the endless photographic possibilities and the buzz of the city in contrast with Cepeda's distinctive silent style, reveals the author's work in a completely new light. The result is a warm, colorful labyrinth of this megacity - its places, streets, architecture and people. Cepeda's managed to create his own São Paulo. Rua Stan Getz reads like a sensual dream that feels real.

Since the 1970s, Chicago-based artist Barbara Kasten (born 1936) has developed her expansive practice of photography through the lens of many disciplines, including sculpture, painting, theater, textile and installation. Kasten was one of the first artists to be invited by Polaroid to use its new large-format film, and it was with this that she made many of her best-known works. In the mid-1980s she stepped out of the studio and began working with large architectural spaces that were symbolic of both economic and cultural capital.

Richard Serra (born 1939) began creating drawings in 1971, and they continue to constitute an autonomous part of his practice. Often large in scale, these drawings are typically made with a thick impasto of black paintstick (or, more recently, lithographic crayons melted into a brick), which is applied to a surface in broad, dense passages. Résumé:
This volume maps fifty years of artists' engagement with sound. Since the beginning of the new millennium, numerous historical and critical works have established sound art as an artistic genre in its own right, with an accepted genealogy that begins with Futurism, Dada, and Fluxus, as well as disciplinary classifications that effectively restrict artistic practice to particular tools and venues. This book, companion volume to a massive exhibition at ZKM | Karlsruhe, goes beyond these established disciplinary divides to chart the evolution and the full potential of sound as a medium of art.

Résumé:
Urban Britain is not functioning as it should. Social inequalities and regional disparities show little sign of going away. Efforts to generate growth, and spread it to the poorer areas of cities, have failed dismally. Much new urban development and redevelopment is not up to standard. Yet there are cities in mainland Europe, which have set new standards of high-quality sustainable urban development. This book looks at these best-practice examples – in Germany, the Netherlands, France and Scandinavia, – and suggests ways in which the UK and other countries could do the same.

Résumé:
Cy Twombly (1928–2011) is widely acknowledged as one of the postwar period’s most influential American artists, yet his sculptures are little known. From 1946 onward, he made hundreds of rarely exhibited found-object assemblages, often painted or plastered over with diverse coatings of white. Across decades, Twombly thus developed a singular, strikingly consistent body of work, despite the shifting status of sculpture during his lifetime. Through close readings of individual works and in-depth analyses of certain guiding concerns, such as surface, naming, gaps, and repetitions, the author illuminates Twombly's remarkable sculptural practice.

This volume examines one year of research and pedagogy at the University of Virginia School of Architecture, engaged in the conditions of the built environment, relative to 3 states of Flux, Stasis and Crisis. The questions we ask are: What is the impact of design on the forces that shape our contemporary reality? To what extent do contingencies of time and place impact our practice, and in return how effective is our response in re-shaping the same contingencies? Contributions: Ghazal Abbasy-Asbagh, Inaki Alday, Robin Dripps, Rebecca Hora, Ryan Metcalf, Matthew Pinyan

Résumé:
In recent years, contemporary architectural theory and practice have shifted from a focus on how a building appears to how it performs. Nowhere are these performative properties more evident than in the field of skyscraper design, where the emergence of ultra-performing materials, interactive processing systems, and digital design and fabrication techniques are making remarkable new structures possible. In this publication, architect Scott Johnson describes how the combination of sophisticated modeling software and demands for ever-increasing environmental sustainability have led to an overwhelming emphasis on high performance.

Résumé:
The art of Alice Neel (1900-1984) distinguished itself from that of her American contemporaries by the special intimacy of its style, in which her drawing practice was a decisive factor. Though somewhat less known than her paintings, Neel's drawings and watercolors articulate an array of influences--German Expressionist and Neue Sachlichkeit painting, the Ashcan School, an early sojourn in Cuba--that accompanied her through her tentative beginnings in the mid-1920s through to the maturity of her art after the Second World War, when she found room to accommodate abstraction and Pop art.
