(Curating) From A to Z offers a summary of the development of curatorial practice over the last two decades seen through the eyes of curator Jens Hoffmann. In this publication each letter of the alphabet evokes a particular word related to the world of exhibition making: From A (as in Artist) and B (as in Biennial) to R (as in Retrospective) and W (as in White Cube). Employing a diarist style, the curator presents his personal curatorial alphabet with a similar transparency and the same idiosyncratic character revealed in many of his exhibitions.

Résumé:
This anthology reconsiders crucial aspects of abstraction's resurgence in contemporary art, exploring three equally significant strategies explored in current practice: formal abstraction, economic abstraction, and social abstraction. In the 1960s, movements as diverse as Latin American neo-concretism, op art and "eccentric abstraction" disrupted the homogeneity, universality, and rationality associated with abstraction. These modes of abstraction opened up new forms of engagement with the phenomenal world as well as the possibility of diverse readings of the same forms, ranging from formalist and transcendental to socio-economic and conceptual.

Résumé:
In 2012, the international congress ‘Architecture: The Common’ was held in Pamplona, presented by Norman Foster. It appealed to civic solidarity as an instrument of architecture in facing the urgent economic and environmental challenges of today. This publication is a record of the event through the interviews conducted by four prominent critics – Peter Buchanan, François Chaslin, Juli Capella and Kosme de Barañano – with the participating speakers, including Eduardo Souto de Moura, Rafael Moneo, Ann Heringer, Roger Diener and others. In this way, it covers a broad spectrum of contemporary sensibilities in architectural practice.

Résumé:
Finnish architect Pekka Harni runs a design and architecture practice in Helsinki together with industrial designer Yuka Takahashi. Their collaboration results in a variety of work, of which this book on the classification of objects is just one part. Based on a morphological-functional consideration of the properties of household objects, the study proposes to organise the forms of artefacts, determine the significance of their parts and explain the relationships between objects and the environment, thus describing their most important basic properties while exploring the realm of functional form.

Résumé:
In 1980, German architect Oswald Mathias Ungers (1926–2007) participated in a competition for solar housing. His contribution received a special prize, but the design was never realised and has been largely ignored since. Yet it remains the only project in which the architect explicitly addressed the issue of sustainability. This publication brings his design to light once again, and is the outcome of an unconventional approach to the architect’s design practice that was undertaken as part of the 2018 summer school at the Ungers Archiv für Architekturwissenschaft (UAA) in Cologne.

Résumé:
In 'As we have always done', Leanne Betasamosake Simpson locates Indigenous political resurgence as a practice rooted in uniquely Indigenous theorizing, writing, organizing, and thinking. Indigenous resistance is a radical rejection of contemporary colonialism focused around the refusal of the dispossession of both Indigenous bodies and land. Simpson makes clear that its goal can no longer be cultural resurgence as a mechanism for inclusion in a multicultural mosaic. Instead, she calls for unapologetic, place-based Indigenous alternatives to the destructive logics of the settler colonial state, including heteropatriarchy, white supremacy, and capitalist exploitation.

Dispensing with simple narratives of reenchantment, this publication illustrates the intricate ways in which we have to some extent always been captivated by the allure of the numinous. It demonstrates how magical culture’s tendencies toward secrecy, occlusion, and encryption might provide contemporary artists with strategies of remedial communality, a renewed faith in the invocational power of personal testimony, and a poetics of practice that could boldly question our political circumstances, from the crisis of climate collapse to the strictures of socially sanctioned techniques of medical and psychiatric care.
