Résumé:
This publication presents a critical history of architectural theory over the last forty years. Mallgrave employs the words theory and architecture in a broad sense - the latter encompassing aspects of urban planning, structural, and landscape design, while theory too is often indistinguishable from practice. The text surveys the intellectual history of architecture since 1968, including criticisms of high modernism, the rise of postmodern and poststructural theory, critical regionalism and tectonics, and the significant changes that architectural thinking has undergone in the past fifteen years, concluding with an analysis of where architecture stands and where it will likely move in the coming years.

Résumé:
This publication is a collection of “favorite” designs as selected by 80 graphic designers, typographers, teachers, scholars, writers and design impresarios. Designers have preferences, like modern over postmodern, serif over sans serif, decorative over minimal, but designers could not be engaged in design practice if they did not love design. The reasons for such a charged emotion varies from individual to individual, but there are certain commonalities regarding form, function, outcome, and more. Design triggers something in all of us that may be solely aesthetic or decidedly content-driven, but in the final analysis, we are drawn to it through the heart.

Résumé:
Beginning with material, this book revolves around physical material making and design decisions that emerge from material interaction. Combining essays from both practice and academia, this book presents some of the most significant projects and thoughts on materiality from the last decade. Beautifully illustrated with a great deal of technical information throughout, it shows work, technical technique and process, and positions it within a broader theoretical intention. By assembling a range of voices, here is a multifaceted portrait of material design today. Students and design professionals alike should find in this book an essential resource for understanding this increasingly important aspect of design.

Why do design? What is design for? In a world of dwindling natural resources, exhausted social and political systems, and an overload of information there are many urgent reasons to reimagine the design discipline, and there is a growing need to look at design education. Learning and unlearning should become part of an ongoing educational practice. We need new proposals for how to organize society, how to structure our governments, how to live with, not against, the planet, how to sift fact from fiction, how to relate to each other, and frankly, how to simply survive.

To stop. A gesture of resistance in a world primarily designed to encourage work, consumerism, perpetual growth and efficiency. Stopping as an urban practice. In cities where pauses and idleness within specific sites are increasingly discouraged, stopping emerges as a space of rupture, pleasure, intimacy, or simply necessity and rest. In a project begun in 2015 in Mexico City and further developed in Montreal in 2017, Jean-François Prost explores these realities for their contrasts with the incessant movement of people and related structures in contemporary cities where sometimes even self-constructions of time and space are forbidden.

The practice, founded in 1985 by Carlo Baumschlager and Dietmar Eberle, has evolved into a global firm comprising eleven offices in countries throughout Europe and Asia. Today it is run by Eberle together with several partners. Academic research and practical experience come together in the architecture of Baumschlager Eberle, which primarily concerns itself with the relationship between density and the atmosphere of cities, as well as the possibility of designing zero-energy buildings. The issue includes a theoretical essay by Eberle, along with extensive profiles of sixteen projects completed since 2000.

Résumé:
A new wave of artistic activism has emerged in recent years in response to the ever-increasing dominance of authoritarian neoliberalism. Activist practices in the art field, however, have been around much longer. As Oliver Marchart claims, there has always been an activist undercurrent in art. In this book he traces trajectories of artistic activism in theater, dance, performance, and public art, and investigates the political potential of urbanism, curating, and 'biennials of resistance.' What emerges is a conflictual aesthetics that does not conform with traditional approaches to the field and that activates the political potential of artistic practice.

Résumé:
In its architectural practice, Elemental responds to an awareness of the intervention context, the socio-cultural and economic dimension, and the recognition of the necessities and eventual deficiencies present. Examining the elementary way this Chilean collective approaches subjects is the focus of this issue. Developing works of very different scales, from individual dwellings to intervention studies at the urban scale, or even provincial planning, founder and Pritzker Prize winner Alejandro Aravena and his team clearly have their origins in South American architecture, yet also show an increasingly socially-engaged and global dimension: simplicity, perpetuality, efficiency, and utility.
