Résumé:
First published by Jonathan Cape, London, in 1937. Reprinted in 2008 by Hyphen Press, layout by Stuart Bailey. "The title of Mr Large's novel is a strange one: SUGAR IN THE AIR. It was published in this country (England) by Scribner's and had a considerable success. It is the story of a hard-working and serious-minded chemist who devotes himself to the problem of making synthetic sugar. Not being a chemist myself, I do not know how plausible Mr Large's formulas and processes would sound to a technical man, but they are convincing to the lay reader, and by the time we see the first supply of "Sunsap" coming out of the vats we believe in it, and are prepared to see the food industry revolutionized. But we have forgotten the profit-takers. Mr Large's hard-working chemist finds himself and his process tied into knots by the financiers." Upton Sinclair

Résumé:
So much writing about architecture tends to evaluate it on the basis of its intentions: how closely it corresponds to the artistic will of the designer, the technical skills of the builder, or whether it reflects the spirit of the place and time in which it was built, making it not much more than the willful (or even subconscious) assemblage of objects that result from design and construction techniques. Renowned writer and thinker David Leatherbarrow argues for a richer and more profound, but also simpler, way of thinking about architecture, namely on the basis of how it performs.

Résumé:
The Austrian sociologist Otto Neurath (1882-1945) was one of the seminal figures of the 20th-century Modern Movement. Member of the Vienna Circle, Founder of the Museum of Society and Economy, inventor of the famous ISOTYPE pictorial system, and champion of the Unity of Science movement, Neurath's lifelong identification with collectivity and the concept of the global polis put him in contact with the leading intellectuals, architects and artists of his time, from Adolf Loos to Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, from Sigfried Giedion to Le Corbusier, from graphic designer Gerd Arntz to architect and urban designer Cornelis van Eesteren. This book traces Neurath's global understanding of the modern metropolis as a global polis, representing an idea about collectivity premised on cultural and linguistic universality. Although much attention has been given to Neurath's achievements in the field of graphic design and philosophy, he has never been treated in the context of urbanism and architecture.

Résumé:
Shaped by immigration, globalization, and demographics, our hub cities demonstrate what's best about Canada: our commitment to education, tolerance, culture, and innovation. Since the early 1990s, however, troubling trends have threatened to undermine our much-envied quality of life. Large urban centres are experiencing a widening gap between rich and poor, mounting levels of violence, and sprawl-induced health and environmental damage. Well-trained immigrants struggle to find suitable jobs and decent housing, while big-city schools suffer from underfunding. Local governments lack the resources and political clout to act decisively. In The New City, award-winning urban affairs writer John Lorinc offers a compelling vision of how to make Canada's metropolitan centres sustainable, livable, and competitive in a world dominated by powerful mega-cities. Incisive and broad-ranging, this is a timely reminder that all Canadians must confront urban issues if the country is to succeed in the tumultuous economy of the 21st century.

Résumé:
This book presents the first results of research initiated for the architecture Masters programme at Delft University of Technology. It focusses on the spatial impact of socio-political developments, with an emphasis on mapping the contemporary urban milieu. Current debate surrounding borders in architecture is explored throughout the book, from conflict zones to marginal urban areas; from Gibraltar, Kaliningrad and Kiev to Benidorm, Marseille and Rotterdam. A selection of projects shows how mapping can be used to register and interpret urban processes, and how these design principles act as catalysts for architectural interventions.
