Résumé:
This book brings together sixteen photographs made by Thomas Struth in Israel and the Israeli-occupied West Bank in 2009, 2011 and 2014. Struth continued his practice of creating singular images, each within one of the strictly segregated subject fields he has developed through his career: street photographs, portraits, landscapes and photographs of high technology. Each image carries the enduring complexity and visual distillation of human experience for which Struth is known. Approaching the sheer diversity and quiddity of the inhabited world, he attempts to represent what he has referred to as “a particle of the conflict of the region”, to photograph, fragment by fragment, the conflicted political and social landscape.

Résumé:
In 1932 nineteen-year-old John H. Howe arrived at Taliesin as a charter member of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Fellowship. There he would remain for the next thirty-two years, earning a reputation as “the pencil in Wright’s hand” before establishing his own architectural practice in Minnesota. This is the first book to tell Howe’s story and also the first full account of his place in the history of modern architecture—as chief draftsman and valued interpreter of Wright’s designs and as a prolific architect in his own right. Illustrated throughout with Howe’s drawings, this biography is a testament to the underappreciated architect’s extraordinary design and rendering skills.

Résumé:
"Construction Matters" develops a way of thinking about architecture in relation to technology that transcends a particular building method or design task. The architect and educator Georg Windeck conducted independent research that ranges from scientific advancements to philosophical contemplations. The discussion that emerges from this work is developed in close collaboration with artist and journalist Lisa Larson Walker, with mathematician and architect Will Shapiro, and with artist and architect Sean Gaffney. If we are to rescue the physical substance of architecture--the Matter of Construction--and create a practice that celebrates both the physical and the metaphysical aspects of building, we must understand how and why construction matters.

Résumé:
This book explores the world of architecture through a series of 101 questions and answers that cover a wide range of issues on its practice and theory. There are historical questions, such as 'Who was the first architect?' and 'Are all churches architecture?' as well as ones that relate to contemporary activity, such as 'Have computers changed architecture?' or 'How small can a home be?'. There are also many that are intriguing and irreverent, such as 'Why do architects want to paint the world white?' and 'Is Dubai a city?'. For each of the questions there is a brief, one-line answer and then a more extended discussion.

Résumé:
This issue of Perspecta -- the oldest and most distinguished student-edited architectural journal in America -- proposes that amnesia, often seen as a destructive force, might also be understood as a productive one, that the gaps it creates might also provide spaces for invention. Contributions from a diverse group of scholars, artists, and practitioners explore the paradoxical nature of amnesia: How can forgetfulness be both harmful and generative? What will we borrow or abandon from yesterday to confront tomorrow? What sort of critical genealogies can be repurposed, suppressed, or manufactured to reenergize current practice? How might we construct counter-narratives, rebel histories, and alternative canons that are relevant to our present moment?

Résumé:
Germaine Krull (1897–1985) was a member of the generation that revolutionised the practice of photography in the 1920s, and the originality of her work is the reflection of a very distinctive temperament. After early years marked by political involvement in the Spartacist uprising in Munich and Berlin and studio photography notable for the deep erotic ambiguity of her female nudes, she attained renown in the late 1920s, largely for the work published in the portfolio Métal (1928). With its low-angle shots of cranes and bridges and details of iron structures, it was a seminal statement of the New Vision aesthetic in France.

Résumé:
Historically, we see the city as the cramped, crumbling core of development and culture, and the suburb as the vast outlying wasteland – convenient, but vacant. Contemporary urban design proves this wrong. In New SubUrbanisms, Judith De Jong explains the on going "flattening" of the American Metropolis, as suburbs are becoming more like their central cities – and cities more like their suburbs through significant changes in spatial and formal practice as well as demographic and cultural changes. These revisionist practices are exemplified in the emergence of hybrid sub/urban conditions such as parking practices, the residential densification of suburbia, hyper-programmed public spaces and inner city big-box retail, among others.

Spanish architects Jose Selgas and Lucia Cano are perhaps best recognised for the tunnel-like glass office they work from in the woods outside Madrid, but this special instalment casts its net more widely to cover the duo’s practice during the last decade. Besides an interview with the architects by Enrique Walker and essays by Ryue Nishizawa and the architects themselves, the pages feature more than 20 notable projects. From 55 dwellings in Amsterdam, Casa La Canaria and an eyewear shop in Cartagena, to their contribution at the 13th Venice Biennale and the renovation of Texas Square in Oranjestad, the projects are colourful, varied and, above all, imaginative.

Résumé:
Working from the tradition of assemblage, the practice of David Armstrong Six denotes a realm of associative abstraction that extends notions of contingency beyond the object and into a zone of poetic reflexivity, levity and grace. The Canadian artist draws upon a wide range of references and materials, producing works in sculpture, drawing and video, and exploits the dubious nature of cultural prototypes. This book represents a series of sculptural propositions emerging from the cumulative conflation of a studio-based language as a venue for perceptual and spatial inquiry. Includes a critical text by Scott Lyall and an interview with the artist by Kristan Horton.
