Résumé:
The Dutch office of Strootman Landscape Architects is extensively profiled in this gorgeous monographic publication by C3. The book is divided by chapter into the themes most relevant to the practice: Garden & Park, Forest & Park, Re-use, Historico-cultural Landscapes, and Living in Water Landscapes. Tackling issues such as planning versus design, spatial solutions in an urbanised world, accommodating natural forms and systems, and the pursuit of the sublime, Strootman presents itself as formally rooted in the history of the Dutch landscape while simultaneously applying contemporary ecological and spatial strategies. Included are a variety of notable projects from both within the Netherlands and across Europe.

Résumé:
This large-format monograph on the famed Japanese architect covers six years of theory and practice through an exhaustive look at over 60 projects, from large (V at Dundee, Sanlitum SOHO in Beijing) to small (Sake no Hana in London, Lake House). Kengo Kuma is known for achieving a new kind of transparency in architecture, and is not bound by using only traditional light materials. Included is his essay, Small Architecture, which gives valuable insight into his view that great disasters, not the progress of technology, have been architectures driving force throughout history, with the most recent example being the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

Résumé:
Following her study at the Delft University of Technology, Japanese architect Moriko Kira set up her own practice in Amsterdam in 1996, and has since both worked for the Dutch government and lectured in the Netherlands. Typical of her work is a variation in scale, programme and location, and she has completed projects in different Dutch cities, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Japan. Featured here are a church conversion in Groningen, a cemetery pavilion in Apeldoorn, housing in IJburg, a weekend house in Hakone, and several other projects. Besides the detailed essays by Kira that accompany each of these, Jo Toda also analyses her work and approach in a short text.

Résumé:
This monograph of work and projects by Venezuelan-born, Swiss-based architect Christian Kerez seeks to elucidate his particular approach, which emphasises how architecture does not exist in and of itself, but is rather a reflection of a practice of questioning, and of working with the unexpected. At its core, the things we take for granted must be seen again, in a new light. Architecture critic Erwin Viray delves into this kind of reasoning in a conversation with Kerez, while the book beautifully presents examples of his designs, among them, a high-rise in Zhengzhou, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, social housing in Paraisópolis and a school building in Munich.

Résumé:
David Adjaye is one of the most in-demand architects today, known for his thoughtful interpretation of public spaces. In order to understand him as an architect, you must look at his projects through the lens of material – a crucial consideration in his practice. Organized into five sections – Stone/Concrete, Wood, Metal, Glass, and Rammed Earth – this volume reimagines the traditional architect monograph by examining the importance of material in architecture, a study vital to Adjaye and his design process. The book features over 30 public, commercial, and residential projects around the world, from his 2001 Concrete Garden in London to the Amoako Boafo Gallery in Accra, Ghana, built with rammed earth and completed in 2022.

Résumé:
Contemporary urban development is increasingly characterized by a reliance on diagrams to convey the rational statistical point of view of the professional urban planner. In his new book Urbanisms architect Steven Holl suggests that just as modern medicine has recognized the power of the irrational psyche urban planners need to realize that the experiential power of cities cannot be completely rationalized and must be studied subjectively. With a selection of urban and architectural projects from his thirty year practice Holl stretches urban planning into the domain of uncertainty. Analyzing a wide range of matters from everyday experiences to spatial data Urbanisms examines how perception and the senses are intertwined with the material space and light of urban form
